The original intent of the movie was for Daniel and Miranda were to get back together again at the end. However, both Williams and Fields put their feet down. They felt it just wasn't realistic for them to resolve all their problems, and would lead kids in the audience to have unrealistic expectations if their parents were getting divorced. So the ending was reworked into what we got.
I’m honestly so glad they didn’t get back together in the end. I needed that message as a kid who grew up in 2 separate households. We needed to know as kids that it’s okay if parents don’t get back together. It doesn’t make us any less of a family. Just a different kind of family. It really resonated with me as a kid
One of the best films that Robin Williams has ever done! In retrospect the divorce was actually good for both Daniel and Miranda. While Daniel needed to learn to be a more responsible parent, Miranda had to learn to be a more carefree one. As it’s been stated that once in the end, it’s more about how the kids are going to be dealing with the divorce, not the parents. If you aren’t aware there is a musical production of this film, and one of the songs is based on a deleted scene in which Lydia wonders why can’t her parents just pretend to be happily married because then they could be a family. Her father response is that we wouldn’t be happy, they wouldn’t be happy, it just be a pretend family. 👨👧👦👩👧👵🏻💖
The recording director in the beginning who argues with Daniel is the voice of Launchpad McQuack from Duck Tales and Dark wing Duck. The bartender in the pool scene is Robin Williams brother. The difficult challenge Robin had was trying to make Pierce Brosnan break character but unfortunately Pierce was able to hold his own.
I grew up with this movie and I’m so glad you loved it as much as I do! And yep I completely agree that it was great how the ending was realistic with the parents not getting back together, and how it was more about the kids. Loved this video and your review 👍
In a recent interview Matthew Lawrence said that while on set Robin Williams was always beaming with more energy than anyone he's ever seen but when he would go to see him in trailer, it would be dark and Robin would have his head in his hands, he believed that his past drug use affected his mental health
The youngest child also played Matilda in Matilda movie. That’s a great movie too. She’s now in her 30s. Crazy. Everyone is awesome in this funny yet emotional movie. So many iconic actors. Great reaction. RIP Robin Williams. Tragic death. He will live on via his amazing work.
has it been 10 years since Robin Williams passed away!? I didn't realize. I couldn't watch any of his movies for a long time after because it seemed sad. But now that I'm old(er) I can come back to them, because I've learned to personally face the bittersweet memories of the people I've known in my life who are dead now. Happy memories of the dead become dark and sad for a while, but you learn to cherish them because those flashbacks are all you have left of them! but on a lighter note, "Run-by fruiting" is the most hilarious phrase ever LOL
One of my favorite robin Willam movies ever bro. Jumanji, JACK, flubbers, birdcage and Mrs. Doubtfire. Robin Williams was an amazing actor and he will forever be missed. ❤ R.I.P
You’ll have to look up the TH-cam video where they cut a trailer together of this movie with suspenseful music to make it seem like a horror movie. Pretty funny stuff. This is one of those comforting comedy movies that I seem to watch anytime I notice it’s on. Robin is at the height of his charms here. Great reaction as per usual, Ollie. Thanks.
This is a top 5 film for me. I can’t even tell how many times I’ve watched it over the years. After Robin died I couldn’t watch any of his films for a long time. It just made me too sad. I’d start a film and just be overcome with sadness that he was gone and wouldn’t give us anymore gems like this. It’s also a film that gave me a great friendship with someone. We regularly just send a message to say “Hellloooooo deaaaaar” and the like. It was probably only last year that I took the time to watch it again. I know it word for word. I cried and laughed the whole way through. I still shed a tear, but now they’re happy tears. I’m sure others have suggested it but Bicentennial Man is fantastic. And as a bonus if you haven’t seen Matilda then you’ll love that too.
I’m a nanny and I hate that the movie makes the interviewing nanny seem mean or bad. I can guarantee you that she said she doesn’t do all that stuff because previous employers have pushed it on her. Parents always try to sneak in extra jobs for nannies/ babysitters without extra pay😒 So you get to a point where you make it known upfront what you will and will not do. What you will do for extra money. A nanny/sitter is not the same thing as a maid/housekeeper. Also a nanny is not a tutor/instructor and paying your Nanny ON TIME should be a given. Nannies have bills as well guys. PSA be good to your Nannies; we know when we are being used. That’s my rant.✌🏼
There is an unused cut of the restaurant scene with just Mrs Doubtfire and Stu. The kids were sent away and Robin was just let loose. It was only partially usable!
In the musical version, a flamenco singer sings "He Lied to Me" during the restaurant scene and it was really a great juxtaposition of the singer's story comparing to Daniel not be truthful. Due to the pandemic Mrs Doubtfire did open on Broadway after Broadway reopened but it was a short-run.
I can't believe he hasn't done Good Will Hunting (1997). Add that Robin Williams won an Oscar for it to your comment. That should convince him. And One Hour Photo shows his actual acting range goes in both directions - it's just that that was the only film he did that went in that as yet unexplored direction. Unless you count Insomnia (2002) maybe... Holy sh*t! Same year. Just noticed that. Robin Williams's darkest year of acting.
One of the greatest moments of my life was getting to work with him. He was such a gentle soul. ❤ I also live in San Francisco and know every location.
Saw this when I was a kid, thought it was hilarious, watching it now you really get the sweet moments too. Robin had a way with the voices! The James Bond coincidence was interesting considering I don't think Brosnan had started playing Bond at the time. Wonderful reaction Ollie, see you soon as always!
"What happened?" "He was quite fond of the drink. It was the drink that killed him." "How awful. He was an alcoholic?" "No, he was hit by a Guinness truck. That was one line i never understood, when she said I have to go to the bank and the market. I'm like then why are you an hour early? Go to the bank stop at the market get your shopping done without kids under foot, then go pick them up. Dad was feeding them, it's his day so it's Saturday so no homework or anything when they get home so plenty of time to spend with them after they get home and she puts away the groceries
The soundtrack and score aren't the same thing. Howard Shore's score is wonderful, with a heartwarming, magical quality to it, and lots of emotion. The soundtrack is made up of snippets of classic songs like Papa's Got a Brand New Bag, Dude Looks Like a Lady, Luck Be a Lady, Walk Like a Man etc. They're all used really well in the film. Anyone can love and appreciate this film, but for those of us who are children of divorce, it hits so much harder.
Not entirely accurate. A soundtrack is composed of ALL music accompanying the film, both pre-existing songs and original music. A score is type of music in the soundtrack, specifically referring to original music composed specifically for the film.
lol at your reference points. pierce brosnan wasnt the standout actor in this movie. robin Williams and Sally field much bigger and better. My parents divorced a year or two before this movie came. Mrs. Doubtfire’s final speech always brings that turbulent time back. Wonderful movie, though. Too bad Robin Williams is gone.

This was Robin Williams at his best. I might suggest trying his darker films, One Hour Photo and Insomnia to contrast with his comedy. And yes, Harvey Fierstein is amazing, don't see him in much.
OMG really ? this is a classic 1 of Robin Williams BEST A comedic classic. It will / has lasted the test of time. Seen it at least 100Xs ❤ I miss Robin sooo much 😢
Another great reaction, you can't go wrong with a Williams movie. Please checkout Williams in Bicentential Man from 1999, it's an emotional roller-coaster with me usually in tears by the end.
in the original script, the parents DID get back together, but Sally Field and Robin Williams felt it gave unrealistic hopes and had the ending changed for the one that you saw. I agree with them
I'm surprised the kids didn't resent their mom for breaking up the family and depriving them of their dad. Many kids would have thought of her--and called her--the "wrong parent" or a "selfish bitch" or worse. And I could understand that.
Kids typically get their attitudes toward each parent from the other parent. If Daniel had sat around bad-mouthing Miranda, the kids would have done so too. But fortunately he didn't.
@@itzakpoelzig330 It wasn't a question of bad-mouthing the other parent. Daniel was the loving parent. He was attentive and doting, though he shouldn't have made a mess of the house. Would the kids be wrong not to feel hurt and angry towards Miranda for taking him out of their lives--or never considering how divorce might turn the kids' lives upside down? Was she not the "wrong parent" or a "selfish bitch" for that?
This movie is funny because of Robin. But however, it has a way of making me cry because of the whole kids taken away part. I am not gonna go into details. But I know how awful it feels not to see your kids and not being able to hold them or see them. only difference I still with my husband but my kids were taken away. But those for stupid reasons that should not even be legal. But anyways. I did enjoy the movie reaction.
It was quite unusual, and I think it still is, for a film to end with a couple who broke up not getting back together. I remember thinking it quite strange to end it like that when I saw it in the cinema. The epilogue too wasn't funny. It was a comedy that diverged in tone, becoming serious and heartfelt for the last fifteen minutes. You were basically brought to tears, at the end of a comedy. However, when you think about it you realise that you've spent the last two hours laughing. Expressing emotions openly like that for so long can make you more receptive to emotion generally, so you follow the film down this tone shift, next thing you're bawling your eyes out. It's the tonal contrast amplifying your emotions, basically.

Without Robin Williams in drag this would be a very boring movie. When this movie came out I went to see it in the theater like a lot of people and I had a very negative experience. The trailer for the movie was very popular and they played the crap out of it on TV. That is normally not a problem but the issue here was that every single thing that made this movie funny or interesting was put into the trailer. So that when you saw it you were basically watching the trailer over again with now a bunch of boring parts inserted so it lasts 90 minutes. The jokes are: Dancing while vacuuming, kicking the soccer goal, face in the cake icing, tits on fire, dentures fall into glass, over powers purse snatcher. The End. I was actually getting irritated at the audience for laughing at this, I was like, "People, you have all seen this a thousand times already! What are you laughing at?"
I never understood her reasons for punishing him so hard. I mean fine you've grown apart, you want something else, she wants a divorce, but I don't get why she's acting like he's some kind of a deadbeat dad towards him, trying to keep the kids away from him, I mean okay the marriage, but you're selfish behavior is hurting the kids, I mean, I don't get it, he is loving, he's there for them, I mean what's the point of punishing him and forcing him away from the kids, I just don't get that part of her reasons in the beginning, when he offers to pick up and spend time with and then drops them off, I mean I just don't get her reasons, it's like she emotionally wants to hurt him and keep the kids to herself like she jealous of him.
Can you react to "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron"? It's a story about a strong, beautiful horse with a spirit that can never be broken. I cry every time I watch it! It's a INCREDIBLE film, and the songs are so cool! But it's not a musical and the animals can't talk. 😭💔🔥
Robin Williams was too good for this world. We miss him, greatly.. edit: Funny that you said "I keep falling for *his* lie!" in which relates a lot to what's going on in today's society. People really be out here living a *lie* with no care in the world without realising they are harming themselves, but ya know.....
Thanks, Oliver & Huxley! ❤🩹 Looks like you went into it thinking it was a pure comedy. Of course, it's a comedy/drama, which adds depth. Chris Columbus was made for directing stories like this, right? I love it and I'm glad you did, too. ෴ And since you called the great *Harvey* *Fierstein* "this guy"... you must really make a point to watch him star in TORCH SONG TRILOGY (1988). You'll love it, I bet.
I like how it ended. It was an atypical happy ending but happy ending nonetheless.

Watching this as an adult, i can safely say, that mother is where fun goes to die.
She was 100% right.
My favorite part is when the mom thinks he's Superman and jumps into Niagara Falls.
U talk too much and miss some very funny moments 😔😔😔
Thanks, Oliver & Huxley! ❤🩹 Looks like you went into it thinking it was a pure comedy. Of course, it's a comedy/drama, which adds depth. Chris Columbus was made for directing stories like this, right? I love it and I'm glad you did, too. ෴ And since you called the great *Harvey* *Fierstein* "this guy"... you must really make a point to watch him star in TORCH SONG TRILOGY (1988). You'll love it, I bet.
