-Our Intro Song "Feel the Love" From Alex's band
open.spotify.c...
My brother and I loved this song. He went into the army during Nam. I’d cry every time I’d hear it while he was gone. He passed away 7 years ago on Veterans Day from pancreatic cancer. It’s hard to not cry now. ☮️❤️ Crystal Blue Persuasion
💔
Oh my goodness, kind wishes to you today …..
So so sorry! ❤
Your post bought back all the feelings I had when my bronther was drafted. I am so sorry for your loss, I can't even imagine your pain. This song definitely brings me back to those days, some of it hard and some of it happy. Sending you love and hugs, dear one.
So sorry to hear about your brother. My brother, drafted in 68, is still going at 71, but when Tommy James and the Shondells came to our town, my Brotther and some of his friends went and partied all night with them. Since I was a couple years younger - of course, he wouldn't let me come, but I did get to see the show.
This is one of those "you had to be there" songs for me...the 60's were so tumultuous, that this song was like an oasis. I could be in the worst mood, and this song can turn me around on a dime - still to this day. I'm not a terribly spiritual person, but this song makes me feel like I am. Glad you reacted to it!
Yea like now... in the worst mood with Biden!
Absolutely agree and sadly, its perfect for today's times too....
Very well said, Randy.
Great comment Randy. 👍
To me it was just another song on the radio. I was a kid in jr. high when it came out so the tumultuous times didn't affect my day to day life.
ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE SONGS! I tell EVERYONE about this song. Soulful, and sooooooo dreamy!!
"Draggin the Line" should be listened to if you want to hear some contrast and is Tommy James' best IMO, but he and the band had a lot of good ones. I wasn't into him enough to buy albums, but this band made the radio worth listening to.
I agree! The bass line alone makes it worth a listen; but, then, it Is my favorite song of theirs.😏👍
I named my dog Sam because of that song
@@bkm2797 I hear you--too many repetitions can ruin any song--for me it was Tommy Roe's "Dizzy"--but that was more because my sister played it endlessly. But I still cringe to this day when I hear it. Covers of "Crimson and Clover" aren't too bad tho--I like Prince's.
Lol, and the stations played that one to death as well, so maybe it was your sister and radio. Cheers
Was gonna suggest draggin the line myself . Good song .
That whole album is trippy. This was Tommy James at the peak of his psychedelic experimentation. All of their stuff didn't sound like this but then everyone and their brother was doing this kind of music at that time. Their biggest hit from the album of course was the title track, "Crimson and Clover". If you haven't done that one you really should check it out. Joan Jett had a very 80s cover of it as well. Tommy James had lots of hits that kept on hitting. His song "Mony Mony" was covered by Billy Idol and made a hit again, then later, that version was parodied by Weird Al in the song "Alimony". On the same album Weird Al did a song called "I Think I'm a Clone Now" which was a parody of Tiffany's cover of Tommy's "I Think We're Alone Now". Other big hits of his were "Sweet Cherry Wine", "Hanky Panky", and "Draggin' The Line". Bottom line, if you don't go down this rabbit hole you at the very least have to try "Crimson and Clover" and it must be the album version because they edited out a lot of the cool guitar bits for the radio version.
"Hello banana, I am a tangerine".......
I'm 67, and I remember when my daughters were younger, and listening to Tiffany doing her cover of "I Think We're Alone Now". I started singing along and they both looked at me and said "How do you know this, it's her new song?" I laughed and said "No, it's a new cover of an old song." They didn't believe me until I got out my Tommy James album and played it for them.
They have a handful to check out but if you're only going with one I'd make it Draggin' the Line.
@@musicluvr70 I was probably 8 or 9 when Tiffany's version became a huge hit. I remember hearing the original a couple years later and thinking, "How the hell is this SO much better and 20 years older?"
I forgot about all those songs until you listed them. I knew there were other songs but my mind was blank. 😊
Tommy James was a hit machine. Draggin' The Line is my personal favorite.
Love Love Tommy James & The Shondells!!! This is one of my favorite songs!!! I voted on this song!!! Excellent musicians!!! Great Rock band!!!!
Tommy James & The Shondells music in the 60's was more pop rock/psychedelic rock. They had a lot of great hits such as "Hanky Panky", "Crimson & Clover", "I Think We're Alone Now", "Mirage", "Mony Mony", "Sweet Cherry Wine", "Ball Of Fire", "Do Something To Me" & "Crystal Blue Persuasion". Tommy James went solo in the 70's & had a big hit with "Draggin' The Line".
I love Crimson and Clover. My high school days were when tbis group was popular.
Tommy James wrote an interesting book about that time in his life. Mostly it was about the record company that put out his music was run the the mafia , and very little of the money He should have got went to him.
the book can be bought on amazon , the title is- Me, the Mob, and the Music: One Helluva Ride with Tommy James and the Shondells
Draggin' The Line for sure.
They did a concert on video, "Tommy James and the Shondells - Bitter End 1999" in a small club atmosphere, and this is an amazing show. Highlight is the 8+-minute version of "Mony Mony".
A gorgeous song, full of hope, fantastic arrangement and production, probably ahead of its time. Always loved this song!
yes ......could be relevant today
Agree! It’s one of the greats!
Definitely hit "Crimson and Clover" next... Be sure to get the long version, not the AM radio cut. It's probably their best known song, and one of the greatest from the psychedelic era.
I respectfully disagree. Not their best song.
Strangely, the single version came first, and they went in and recorded drop-in pieces to make it longer for the LP version. Usually in those days, the LP version was too long, and was edited down for the single, but this was done in reverse.
@@nazfrde Thanks, I didn't know that! ;-)
@@jamesbenton8347 i disagree. its their best song
@@jamesbenton8347 i think he meant best known song as in popularity, cuz that is true
This is such a chill vibe, why is there nothing like this anymore?
Donna Bruhn I lived in this period as a young man in my early 20s ( I am now 76 ). When I hear this song or " How Can I Be Sure?" by the Young Rascals or " Like To Get To Know You " by Spanky and Our Gang...and quite a few others - I get that feeling of nostalgia that takes me straight back there. There was a lot of music about love, peace, brotherhood in the late 60s. Yes, it was a tumultuous era as well, but the overall mood and vibe back then was positive and laid back. The 'atmosphere' today in America is rude, rough and hateful...with many of our elected leaders and politicians demonstrating the worst of those qualities.
@@jaycorby Those are good comparisons! The song definitely has a "sunshine pop" feel. (check it out if you're not familiar with that genre title)
@@sourisvoleur4854 I definitely will. I've not ever heard the term " sunshine pop "...sounds like a Google adventure for New Year's Day.
Outrage sells.
Different drugs.
This song was used brilliantly in "Breaking Bad." Definitely one of the gems of the 60's.
What is “crystal blue persuasion “
@@Meandmymirror the persuasion of Walt's blue crystal
That is what I just mentioned. I live in Albuquerque. This song is my ringtone. Love BB
@@kayohmberger5294 Great ringtone choice! 😊
That's the only reason I know of the song lol
This song is perfect. If you missed the '60s you can't understand what it was like hearing this song blaring out of your radio in the Summer of 1969. Vietnam was raging and we had just buried MLK and RFK. But.. in 1969, the Mets were on a miracle playoff run, we were landing on the moon and Woodstock was right over the horizon. Suddenly everything felt different. This tune was part of the soundtrack to all of it. It was pretty damn magical. Still is.
I've met Tommy a few times. He's one of the most genuine people you could meet. He lived a few miles away from me in his boyhood. He wasn't afraid to write a song like this, one of Christian devotion and hope.
@Andyman58 I got to meet Tommy in 2019 after the show. He signed my 50 year old album cover, as well as his book... Great guy! 😊
This is a song this younger generation needs to take to heart. The angry feelings caused by the unfairness of life has always been with humanity, and the sun still rises every day. It did before you were born and it will after you die. Make YOUR best life cause you cannot control society.
Amen❤
@Penderyn Lewsyn of course slavery ended. It ended because people changed their thinking. But lets move ahead to a time more recent so you understand. In the mid 1950s things were much like it is now. I know, I was young then. There were literally whole state that had no people of color. Before television those white people could (and often did) live their whole life without meeting one black person. Most didn't hate black people they simply never thought of them. Those same people (who never witnessed the injustices of racism) still voted for people in their local, state and federal elections that changed the laws in the 1960s. Was it perfect? No. But it was better than before. Society is fluid and humanity is imperfect. When you live and love your own life (regardless of hardships) you affect those around you. You cannot force others to bend to your will, (for a time yes but it will snap at some point) but the you can affect true change by simply making your life the best you can make it. Not unlike a pebble in a pond. The pebble does nothing but effects of that pebble are great. If you live your best life, the effect will be much greater. Hate and force never affect permanent change only temporarily compliance.
👍✌
Tommy is still writing and recording, and he's an absolutely brilliant pop songwriter. How he's not in the R & R Hall of Fame is ridiculous. Amazing talent. This song was really just near the beginning of when he started creating one magnificent pop song after another.
I agree. Another one who shamefully isn't in are Jethro Tull
The R&R HOF is a joke
This has been my fav song since 1969 . Thanks so much for ending the year with it ❤️✌️
Tommy James ad the Shondells was one of my first concerts back in 1968. Went with my older cousin, and it was held in a local high school gym. This was before arena shows. Ticket was around 1.50. Incredible times indeed!
I also saw Tommy James and the Shondells in 1968 (small world). I was a freshman at Vincennes University (Indiana), and they played at the Homecoming. Pretty cool.
Such a feel good song going into the New Year, it's talking about "Peace" and "Love" and we need that!! Great choice from the poll everyone and thank you Andy and Alex for a truly fun Year🎉🎉🎉
Well stated
In this terrible world with Biden. ..so sad
@@michaelasay8587 Sorry, I was thinking of music and how it can heal the soul only.🎶🎵🎶🎵
Yeah! Happy New Year '22!!
Whoo hoo!
AGREED 💯 %‼️
📻🙂
Good instincts, Alex. Tommy James and the Shondells do have a bunch of different sounds. "Draggin' the Line" is a great tune with a very different sound, as is "Mony, Mony" (which was covered by Billy Idol in the '80s). "Crimson and Clover" is another one you must hear.
Gentleman this was born out of heart of the peace and love hippie movement of the late 60s. Not a song you particularly take to at first listen but it did have a way of working its way into your psyche over time. Quite the vibe. And yes it did crossover to R&B radio. "they'll be peace and good.. brotherhood".. "Crystal Blue persuasion." Ha!! Boy did we get that wrong!!
Happy New Years guys!! 🎉
It was written after he read the Book of Revelations in the Bible…
"Crystal Blue Persuasion" is a song somewhat typical of the 60s in its musicality and its lyrics. I mean "love is the answer" and "peace and good, brotherhood" were sayings of cohesiveness that the 60s were trying to convey.
As a child of the 60s and 70s, I was exposed to soooo many songs of peace and love! I was convinced that "a new sun is rising" and the world was indeed gravitating toward unity. Boy, were we wrong!! It's a crying shame that love seems to be losing to isolation and separation. The world NEEDS more songs like this to remind us that LOVE is the purpose for existence. Once we accept that we ARE the personification of LOVE, we will spread that love into the world! ✌❤💙💛💜💚💖💞✌
You captured perfectly all our disappointment that the world didn't embrace peace and love as lyrics in the song "What the world needs now is love sweet love" implored us to do. I guess we were naive to think we could change human nature and society perhaps we did a little but seems like we're going backwards these days.
I think it all started like that, new energy and optimism, but then the drugs distracted so many of our generation and turned it toward addiction instead of freedom.
@@lindawulfkoenig4907 No. The rich and powerful squashed any hope of true freedom. Many, many sold out their hopes and dreams because they saw the futility of large scale change. I saw first hand what happened after the JFK, MLK and Robert Kennedy assassinations (among others) did to the psyche of the young people.
We can only hope to change ourselves. The powerful will always be in power, and that alone will not buy them peace and happiness. Only love will....
Well said!
Still one of my favorites. I was about 4 when this was released and my oldest sister (who was in nursing school at the time) used to play this song a lot, she had the 45 single. She would pick me up and dance around with me. The message still holds true today.
Nice memory. My older sister’s records had a big influence on me when I was a little kid.
Absolutely ANYTHING by Tommy James and the Shondells is great. Crystal Blue Persuasion, Crimson & Clover, Mony Mony, Draggin the Line, I'm Coming Home, Ball Of Fire, Sugar On Sunday, Sweet Cherry Wine, I Think We're Alone Now and Hanky Panky.
When this came out I was just a little kid, saying Peace and Groovy... like the hippies around me. A cool time for music. People were trying to manifest a better reality than the war and chaos around us.
Tommy James was huge on the radio in the ‘60s. Never really taken seriously because they were a singles band, but the singles were amazing.
What do you mean by the term "singles band"? All those singles came off studio albums. Their 1969 Crimson and Clover album reached #8 on the charts.
@@BobSoltis1 That's true, but before Crimson and Clover came out, critics referred to them as a bubblegum band. This was due to the song I Think We're Alone Now. No biggie though, Tommy got the last laugh. 😉
I actually went AHHHH! when I saw who you're reacting to today. Love this song. Thanks A & A for entertaining us. ❤👍🤙
Shondells sounds like it would be a 50’s group name, but their music is definitely 60’s through and through. Mony Mony and Hanky Panky are fantastic also. Don’t miss Crimson and Clover - the long version!
To me, the key change is perfect, as it happens with the lyric, "Maybe tomorrow..." Positive, optimistic, raising the vibe.
This song is so so good. I can be in a bad mood or feeling a little down then I listen to this and it makes me feel better. Such a beautiful song.
This song was so impactful when it was played on Breaking Bad. I STRONGLY encourage you to listen to the song from the final scene of BB-Baby Blue by Badfinger. Man, just like this tune, the song choices in the series is one of the things that made that series so great. btw- the Tommy James had a number of diferent sounds worth looking into. Happy New Years A+A and all!!
You're right, that song done on Breaking Bad was genius. And thanks for the info-I didn't know it was Badfinger!
I second Baby Blue and boy that was a fantastic song to end the show
Other songs by this band, Draggin The Line, Crimson & Clover, Mony, Mony. This band is truly reflective of the music scene, in their day. There were rumors that the title of the song referred to the name of a popular LSD that was out at the time. Definitely was a song for the hippies as is Crimson and Clover.
Let's not forget the blue meth from Breaking Bad!
Tommy James was/is vocally anti drug & has said both Crystal Blue Persuasion & Sweet Cherry Wine were inspired by him becoming a Christian. That said, "back in the day", I didn't know anyone who cared what inspired the songs, they were def "song(s)" for the hippies."
It was huge summer of 1969. I remember blasting my radio out the window as I mowed the lawn in August of 1969, and this was playing real loud. I was about to turn 12.
Draggin The Line
Crimson And Clover
There's a song with very similar progression from early 70s: "Suavecito" by the band Malo. I heard it's Santana's brother. It's Really groovy, must hear
Suavecito is definitely in this same vein. I love them both. i wish this song was 7 minutes long... maybe 20.
Great song.
This was the ultimate summer song when I was a kid. Still love it.
The first notes take me straight back to summer 1969- the beach at Gulf Shores, Alabama. I can smell the CopperTone✌🏻
Their sound was/is all over the road. Songs by them are recognizable as being by them, but their "sound" evolved with the times in which they were recording (1964-1970-ish) new material. You've probably heard covers of several of their songs, done in the 80s and 90s.
Here's some context for you guys. The WABC (New York) survey for August 12, 1969.

I've loved Hankie Pankie since I was about 4 years old.
I am pretty old and 90% of the music you react to is the music I lived through and loved and I have to say that I see a lot of youtube music reactors and you guys are the VERY BEST out of them all. While I may not always agree with you, You're analysis of the music is extremely intelligent, insightfull, and knowledgeable and that is what makes you guys the best there is one here!! Keep up the outstanding work of bringing my music to the younger generation. ❤👍
I believe they give the song a listen before they film the reaction in order to give the detailed analysis. I don't see anything wrong with that if that's the case.
Check out Crimson and Clover. When I was growing up back in the day, the roller skating rink would always play that song for the lady's choice skate
"Crimson and Clover" "Dragging the Line" and especially "Mony Mony"
This song became popular again on the "Breaking Bad" Series. Thanks for sharing guys, hope you have a wonderful weekend and the best to you and your dear families for 2022!
This Song Reminds Me of A Younger Couple That Were Friends of My Mom & Dad, Fred Had Just Returned From His Tour in Vietnam That Summer of 1969 !! He Has Since Passed !! R.I.P. Fred !! Thank You For Your Service !!
Breaking Bad introduced this song to me a few years ago.
"Shondells" was named after a local musician from Fort Wayne, Michigan, Troy Shondell, who had a hit record in 1961.
Really!! For 50+ years I've wondered what that name was about. Thanks for that bit of info! You never know what you'll learn on the internet! Cheers!
You guys reachin' back to the 60s! Hippies, flowers, peace, love and a musical awakening.
This song is a pure vibe track
Awesome song so 60's vibe! my favorite Tommy James and the Shondell's song. Crimson and Clover, Draggin the line , I think we're alone now, Mony, Mony.
This popped up this morning on my TH-cam home page. I’m 62 years young and man this took me right back to the 70’s at the roller skating rink 😂 So amazing to watch you young people react to great music. Thanks!
Crystal Blue Persuasion...... think about it. Everyone's happy and getting along. Trip tune and a good one.
Really think you would enjoy draggin the line. It's my favorite and i love a lot of their songs
Thanks for all of the great music this year & the time you two put into it. It is greatly appreciated. Happy New Year guys.
Love it when you guys go back to the 1960s. So many groups and songs have lasted the test of time. This is almost as good as Mony Mony.
Mony = Mutual of New York.
True story. Tommy James was trying to come up with a song in his New York apt and the sign was flashing outside his window.
Instant inspiration.
Agree- I prefer Mony Mony
I wore this out on a 45. ❤️
I can relate!!!
just remember, these songs ('60s,'70s,) were listened to while in a slightly altered state of mind...sounded great.
This song is a mood changer. If this doesn't put you into a "I'm chilling now and everything is cool" mode then you have a lifeless soul.
This was one of my favorite bands of the late 60’s. They had several hits including the banger Mony Mony which was covered by Billy Idol. They just shred that song and is a must for you to review.
We played this at my dad's funeral. He saw them in concert twice. Was always his favorite singer. I recommend crimson and clover too
Peace....Love....and the 1960s. You had to experience the time...politics...and overall vib of those days. Excellent...beautiful music of that time. Lived it. Loved it.
My favorite of all his hit songs, which there were many, are this one. He was inspired by his reading of the book of Isaiah where it speaks of the Blue Shekinah Light which represented the presence of the Almighty God and the books of Isaiah and Revelation where it speaks of a bright future of a brotherhood of mankind living in peace and harmony. Wouldn't that be a treasure for mankind. The sound, instruments and words really shine in this gem. Crimson and Clover, Mony, Mony and I Think We're Alone Now are more great listening here.
This song was popular when my senior class took a week long trip to Florida. When I hear this song. I can close my eyes and be transported to June of 1969. I would swear I can feel sand on my feet and hear and smell the ocean. In midwinter it is a vacation.
One of my all-time favorite songs! I grew up listening to Tommy James and the Shondell’s songs!
Quite a classic! Oh, and a very happy early New Year to you both and all the people here! Whisky in hand.
Tommy has a radio show Sunday afternoons on the 60’s satellite radio station. I never miss it.
So glad you did this tune. This has been a decades-long ear worm for me, in a good way. Not a week goes by that I don't find myself humming it!
I love the key change. It’s weird and it comes out of nowhere. I like music that takes unexpected left turns.
Every so often Alex over intellectualizes music. But on the flip side, he has taught me to listen to a lot more of what's happening in songs.
Dive into Crimson and Clover and Draggin the Line!
This song came out when I was in the sixth grade and the two cutest girls in school did a dance number to it in a talent show I still remember it to this day.
It's been decades since I've heard this song. Brings back memories of fall in junior high, first girlfriend etc.
Some songs magically transport you back to your youth, this song does that for me, thanks for doing this one, it’s the music that influenced many of my generation.
Thanks for bringing that old great music back to the masses. I too love the harmonies.
I have this album on vinyl. Classic 60’s psychedelic. Not a bad track on the album.
Such a beautiful song. The 60's and 70's were wonderful. People actually had hope. I am so sorry you guys missed them.
Another group more deserving of the rock hall than about a third of those currently in.
Looking forward to your take on Draggin' the Line and Mony Mony in 2022. Happy New Year everyone! ✌
Another one of those late 60s songs that truly captures the era.
Happy New Year, you two! ✌🏽
Happy New Year, A&A family! May 2022 be a banger!
This has been my favorite song since I was 6 in 1968. It still gets to me whenever I hear it.
Tommy James created some of the greatest pop psychedelia of the 60s. I only saw the light of this truth when some friend played his greatest hits and I kept dancing thinking “oh wow great song”. Explore his stuff.
Do you know the Association? LA’s answer to the Zombies. Start with “Never My Love”.
Thank you for helping to make 2021 bearable. Happy new year!
I was just thinking last week "the boys should do Crystal Blue Persuasion!" I love the vibe of this song and especially the message! Beautiful song to close out the Sixties!
few songs lift me up like this one...always a mood changer for me. as a kid I remember listening to it on the old AM radio in my mom's oldsmobile and it meant something to me then, and it means something now. peace out
There are songs in the 60's and 70's that just define the times...this is one of those songs .
You know your aging when you remember that on the top 40. Glad you guys are teachable.
I'm waiting for the video to start, but the song is already playing in my head. It's a hazard from being 11-years-old when it came out.
Same here Lori but I'm singing it out loud and scaring my dog.lol
I was about to graduate high school. 👵
I was 12 and it’s still one of my top 5 songs of all time.
You realize now with 20/20 hindsight just how good we had it back in the day. So, SO many great songs just flying out of that radio. Whatever happened to all that great song writing? It's dead today, but its memory lives on. It's all so crystal clear.
This was a really big band in the late 60's! Mony Mony, I Think We're Alone Now, Crimson & Clover, Draggin' The Line (1970), Ball of Fire -- there are a bunch of great songs. If I'm not mistaken, the band was put together originally by a sort of shady, mob-connected producer in Pittsburgh, PA, of all places. (Nothing against pittsburgh)
Love that song! Great alone by the pool or quiet ⛱ beach, so relaxing. 👌 Thx guys.
This song, along with "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield, "Get Together" by The Youngbloods, "Time has Come Today" by The Chambers Brothers, and so many others were the songs that created my generation. Oh yeah, and "My Generation" was another one! (The Who) They all were more influential than my own religion I was raised on. It made more sense and was more real. Musically, they are perfect to my brain. I love that you reacted to this one. It is a favorite of mine. A+ in my head and heart. But I get it, you are looking at it musically with a clear palate. Thanks for the reaction!
He still puts on a great show! Saw him just a few years ago! Great talent.
Can’t wait for the suggestions to come in. Tommy James was a hit machine.
This song came out 1 year before I was born, but I remember growing up (even into the mid and late 70's) my parents playing this song on 45's and 8-track. I loved this song so much when I was little. I'd dance around with my mom and aunts to this! Great memory for me! Thanks! Loved this reaction guys! 🥰
This song is and was really and truly, GROOVY ! Great song ..... ! Simple, Meaningful and Beautiful! THANKS
This takes me to a very happy childhood. I love it.
Very cool! Another great Michigan band from that era. The Band was close to where I grew up in Kalamazoo Michigan and close to where Del Shannon was from too. Thanks for sharing this awesome trip down memory lane.
My favorite song by Tommy James and the Shondells , as a matter of fact one of my all-time favorite songs 🌟🤩
You definitely have to check out Crimson and clover,Mony Mony and Draggin the line.Joan Jett covered Crimson and Clover and Billy Idol did Mony Mony.Back in 1968 this song was much more than "OK" it was HUGE!😊
I had a charmed middle school life with this music when it was new as our soundtrack, back in the day...
