Great video, try a length of 1 1/4" PVC, bury the PVC in sand to the rim, so the PVC won't distort to bad, pour your lead in the PVC, add your hook with qtip. This works great, just leave it in the PVC. If you make them too heavy just trim it down, cut the PVC and remelt lead for your next weight.
Try sash weights from old house windows, they’re used to offset the weight of the window while raising it. Most people rip out their old windows in favor of modern ones so they’re free for salvaging. All the ones I’ve seen weigh 7-8lbs.
Imao, great upload brings back memories we did the same some years back and did everything you advised not too,we used steel pipe about 1 inch in diameter for sea bass maybe a little to thin and i think a little moist inside too, them things were like getting sprayed with a shot gun frigging hurt like hell can tell you we learnt from our mistakes the second time around lol.enjoyable as always heiko thanks pal
my dad used to make his own weights I still have his Melting Pot and the mold a lot of tire places don't give them to you because they already have people to give them to I've tried it that is a very cool Melting Pot
I dive around the skyway fishing pier in Tampa and collect the discarded castnets that are stuck to the bottom and cut the lead lines and melt/reuse the lead weights. Ha the lead melter 4:20
Smart move, didn't think about that. I've always got my lead from the tire shops. I think I'll do that here in Destin, FL from now on. I know where everyone uses nets to catch bait, think I'll start there!
rebar used in construction, hit up a local company and they will probably give you a ton of offcuts for beer money. use the big stuff, 1.25" and up, just weld a half link of chain on top. Cheaper, recycling construction scrap, sacrificial, and they will rust away so better for the environment.
Do you find it holds bottom as well when you use that? I have issues with it not holding so well in stronger currents the concrete vs lead. Probably due to so much more surface area
Honestly, I haven’t used this method for making my weights, but it’s a method I remember from an old fishing friend. He used with his electric reels and deep dropping and it seemed to work well for him.
I plan to experiment with using PVC together with concrete or maybe make mold from something like your can idea. I think that the concrete should hold bottom well as long as you make the weight heavy enough. I think 8-10lbs of concrete would hold bottom. Idea is just something I thought I would throw out there as an alternative to lead. Good Luck and tight lines!!
Molten lead is no joke. I'd suggest wearing gloves (welders gloves are best) long pants (heavy jeans, no holes) a long sleeve, loose fitting shirt and work boots. Also, the real danger with melting lead is heating it to the point where it becomes a gas. Inhaling those fumes would be very dangerous and could lead to long term injury. If you keep the temperature of the lead controlled, that shouldn't be an issue. Using that sort of melting pot should allow you to keep the lead at a safe temp.
Doesn't nick stanzyk just use large diameter rebar? Seems that would be more cost effective. And you could have a shop fab up a bunch of them in no time.
Well I have about 120 pounds of lead collected from under bridges. Also hospitals usually have tons and tons of free lead (they transport cancer medicine in it). Maybe i'll do a video on the rebar ones! That would be great too
@@SouthFloridaFishingChannel oh nice!! I make all sorts of weights myself no rolls, barrel sinkers, etc.. btw of you find their not coming out right. Use a torch to preheat the mold. Its crucial that the bottom of the cavity is really hot as that will draw the lead all the way in instead of solidifying in the spout. Took me a while to figure it out for myself.
REBAR is the cheapest fastest easiest solution. get the chart that tells you weight per foot for each diameter. have it cut to the length you want. tack weld a chain link to the end, or whatever else you want. sky is the limit. you don't have scavenge around town for lead. Go to a rebar yard, buy from the remnent pile, or just but it new. They will cut it to your size. I get 50 to 100 at a time. Easy. Just get a cheap harbor freight welder.
I bought a wooden whistle. But it wooden whistle. so I bought a steel whistle. But it steel wooden whistle. So I bought a lead whistle. But it steel wooden lead me whistle.
I'll tell my wife I have a new way to loose 8lbs(or more) every time I go off shore fishing. Shecwill tell me to go all the time.!Haha, 420 lead melter. 🤙Nice
I use steel. Much cheaper, about 2/3 density and no health effects dealing with it. For my smaller weights I use 316 stainless 3/4" round bar and a little hoop of tig filler rod. Never rusts. For bigger weights you can just have the steel yard cut pieces of 2" or 3" mild steel round bar and paint them. They charge me about 70c a pound, less at the scrap yard. Don't mess with lead, it's not worth it.
When I was 13 me and my friend and his dad all went fishing on his boat and we stopped fishing for a break and we were swimming my friend saw a really long fish and scared and a swordfish stabbed went right into his leg. He’s fine now but he has a huge scar on his leg.
oh yea? It gets down there with no problem? I tried to use concrete once but it just wasn't performing how I wanted it too. Too much surface area in the current

Your really weighing your channel down with this video...
We used 1 inch+ thick rebar pieces for weights they are cheaper than lead. Great video love watching you fish and all your adventures you have.
You can get free lead from any roofer. We remove lead stacks every day. Awesome video bro. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Send some my way mannnn!!!!! =)

Have you ever tried making weights with concrete? Saw some guys doing that. Seems a bit cheaper...

Just a question could you use concrete its soo much cheaper
The hook will float on top of thelead. using a toothpick or stick might not work as the hook will try to float (steel less dense than lead , right?)
Get the Balance weights from the Tire Place. Is free

Won't the sharp top of the can possibly cut the line???
what about contamination with lead vapor ? heavy metal
You should use that Mercury 2-stroke for a lead weight, 4-stroke would save you tons in fuel.

Hey Heiko, you should look into using PVC/CONCRETE instead of lead to make your weights for deep dropping and sword fishing super cheap and effective

The best joke I know about lead is, I know a guy who dipped all the lead out of the top of a pot that pours from the bottom :-)
LOL, you're a good sport Heiko, love your channel! If you get a chance, check my channel! (Btw i've been subbed to you forever)
gave you a sub! I'm down for a catfish fry sometime!
You can add scrap metal with the cement for extra weight! thanks for the vids
Use a propane burner and a old cast iron pot. plumbers did it for years works great
I make weights by the truck loads if you need them I also have loads of wind weights 3to8 pds about 1/3 price of lead
I can always use more weights!
Take the can off and spray it with flex seal accept for the hook eye
Fine work my man!
paper towel rolls and toilet rolls work to?

Why not cut/remove the can from the outside of the weight?
14:11 Explained here, he has a good point also.
I explained it near the end. But it's because I don't like touching the lead. Some people paint their weights.
Everyoneeeee is raving about White Claw. From the East Coast to here in the West. Crazy
Try concrete and peel the can away. The can can and will cut most any line

yea yea! And all charters come with a video too =) the memories will live on!
Hallo you are back.
I would imagine you would want to trim the top of the can, or remove, so it doesn’t slice your line.
use a can opener to open the can
now there's an idea!
Heiko, you have lead us down a road of no return. HAHA
The q- tip or tooth pick won't work. The lead is much denser the steel. The hook would float.
It worked perfectly for me on the second one I made

I like to pour the white clam all over my face, with a hint of lime

I like pouring them in the trash where they belong. Modelo especial with squirting limes in my eye, while banging lines of salt off a hairy dudes ass
Be careful with automotive wheel weights some are aluminum now
❤️
My local gun range has free lead.... good luck!
great idea!
I'd trim the upper edge of the white claw can so the sharp edge first cut the leader, other than that perfect! When's this month's raffle going off?
It will go off tomorrow! Sorry about the delay. I'm making a post about it later today!
@@SouthFloridaFishingChannel no worries! Glad you're making videos! Hope the storm didn't get you guys too bad.

You need to scrape the junk "impurities" off the top of the melting lead. Ive made a bunch of egg sinkers. Way cheaper.
