    Steve, honestly your videos make me so so happy. It’s so refreshing and honestly heartwarming to see someone who identifies as a straight cis ally being so outspoken and vocal about the dangers and issues facing the lgbtq and specifically trans community. It honestly truly makes my day a little brighter to see your videos pop up and I know there’s an ally out there who won’t stop standing up for my community that I love so much. You truly are a beautiful human, and embody everything that a Trekkie and good person should be. I honestly cannot thank you enough.

      I agree. Especially with what's going on now. I'd like to say it'll get worse before it gets better, but in reality it may never get better. Especially if republicans win in 2024

      Here in 2023… and now more than ever… this is true.
      If it helps any, I'm a straight male Mexican in support of your community.
      While… I have problems of my own to think about, I'll never stop knowing how wrong it is to deny any human being of their rights to exist HAPPILY!
      Stay safe!

    Thanks for your thoughts, Steve - you show "ally" as a verb, not just a noun to slap on yourself. You do it, and speak up, and it's great.
    On a more whimsical note, can you make this gay Trekkie's day by saying where to get that rainbow Trek shirt? I'm feeling a HUGE need (though I might not be able to get it before Pride Month ends, alas!)

    We've been seeing Nazis openly marching on US soil for several years now. The fact there is no national conversation about this is deeply troubling. Our grandparents who fought in WWII are turning over in their graves. The fact the cops alow them to march is even more troubling. When I bring this up among acquaintances they will argue that I see Nazis everywhere and these folks aren't real Nazis. They're just trolls and I'm falling for it. How fucked up has our society gotten where any of this is acceptable.
    Came for the Star Trek, stayed for the fantastic commentary.

    You're not an ally Steve, you are a Comrade and much love to you for it. You know, prior to transitioning when I was trying my hardest to be a "rational" liberal atheist that would "look at the whole to come to my conclusions," this 80 year old peace activist said, "in life, you need to ask yourself, which side are you on boy?" That statement from this lady rocked my world and as an old soldier I knew she was right. Morality is not rational and atheists are capable of being myopic and terrible, just like everyone else. Thanks again and much love Steve Shives!!!

Thank you for putting your ethics and beliefs into play in your life... rather than the many who just give lip service and use the downtrodden as a currency or means to their end (whether lgbtq+, Brown, Black, etc...) I don't turn to people to speak for me on the issues I face as a minority, but it's actually good to see that others stand along with me and others even if we don't agree 100% on all issues.

    "It was only a few Nazis at Detroit Pride." That's a fair distance from saying, "There was only one suicide bomber," but it's a similar concept, Steve. Those idiots showed up for one reason and one reason only, more than likely: TO CAUSE TROUBLE. Whether they succeeded or not isn't the point. The point is their desire to disrupt.
    BTW, I LIKE the outdoor setting. You haven't done that in a LONG while, and it's a nice change of pace.

      @@A.KZydik This is my first Pride month as a Pansexual, and I can answer your question..at least from my perspective. I thought I was bisexual for a long time, but after being attracted to nonbinary individuals as well, I realized I was pansexual. I knew I always cared more about actions and personality rather than looks, but I wasn't aware until last year that there was a term for it.

    • @KayleighBourquin
      @KayleighBourquin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@A.KZydik As a Pansexual I honestly have no idea what you're on about. Of course you can come out as Pansexual. It's not a philosophy or mind set it's an sexual and romantic orientation. One that shares much with Bisexuality, and is just as if not more overlooked or misunderstood as Bisexuality. It's can be difficult to talk about, especially for men given how pervasive certain stereotypes and expectations for men are. It's not a "common" or "normal" thing in most people's eyes and thus a lot of people keep it to themselves, they're in the closet about it.

      I guess I know what you're getting at, if I'm correct... It's about same as me being straight and not being initially attacked to person of opposite gender and then getting attracted once I get to know them?
      Hmmm, should I call myself pansexual now? (Ofc. Not)
      Also are you sure we can know someone else's mind and heart, fully?
      I don't think I even know mine to begin with.

    • @Krystalmyth
      @Krystalmyth 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nonbinary refers to gender... There are still two sexes right? I don't think anyone is trying to say there is right? So isn't pansexuality in a way making trans people as others? Its like, I like men and women of all identities. That makes me bisexual. I'm still bisexual even if they're trans. If I only liked men as a heterosexual woman, including transmen I'd still be straight. Right? Pansexuality is confusing the issue IMO.

    • @Krystalmyth
      @Krystalmyth 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anarkyll Zydik Its almost offensive that you think bisexual individuals are attracted to just the physical sex. There are two sexes, and a spectrum of identities and personalities and individuals in between. This is why I long abandoned the term. Orientation refers to gender, and practically speaking only refers to sex when there is a lack of gender. A heterosexual man, is attracted to women. If they happen to be trans, they're still straight. If they happen to be neither, then it becomes about sex, personality, and the individual. Who will have physical qualities within a spectrum of two sexes.
      Being bisexual would mean they're all covered. I don't need a term elevating me into saying that I care about more than their sex and gender when picking a partner. Like what's on the inside? Wtf.
      Everyone does. That's every orientation. Fuck. Shit reminds me of Sapiosexuality and Demisexuality. Pansexuality is in the same special little corner.

I remember when TH-cam used to be like this. 2) Speaking of which, 'open platform' really means everything that can make money for us. You are absolutely correct: the executives TOTALLY endorse this nasty crap- because the executives don't feel the effects of bigotry. It a lack of true moral responsibility. 3) Saying that you are seeking to have common ground with violent bigot is like saying you seek common ground with cancer. Like, no. As Captain Kirk said to Ruk: "You cannot protect those who seek to destroy you." Like wise, you cannot extend companionship nor ground to violent bigots.

    Thank you Steve, I really appreciate your earnest support. Though as an lgbt person I’ll feel there’s something that allies and our community and other marginalized communities miss when we have this discussion; the Nazis are bad news for EVERYONE.
    Obviously privileged people are at less risk, and if we were to be sent back to Nazi Germany there’s very few who’d choose to be Jewish over someone whom regime approved of, but even for those people who the Nazis approved there was harm. Freedom and rule of law were destroyed. Teachers and university students who say the Nazis for what they were got persecuted, some people got jailed for telling jokes about Hitler. And of course millions died in the war.
    So I feel like we should be saying to straight white people, “Yes this doesn’t affect you now...but it will.” Everyone no matter how privileged should be against the Nazis because the Nazis are evil. Nobody wins there. You want to live in a country that tolerates this? Fine, but once the bigots are done with marginalized people they’ll come for those who don’t think right. They thrive on hate, and it will never stop with one group. The poem “First they came” puts it best,
    “First they came for the socialists and I did not speak out, because I was not a socialist.
    Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out for I was not a trade unionist
    Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew
    Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me.”
    Now it’s easy to brush this off as it is hard to imagine things every getting that bad here...but I’m sure people couldn’t imagine how bad thing would get back then.

    Simply put....the mere fact that these conversational points needed to be said should really leave us shamed. Shamed for the tolerance of bigotry, shamed for the tolerance of half baked apologies, shamed for the lack of compassion for those that are different than those of privilege and power. Our ethics, compassion and fundamental willingness to see from the legit victimized point of (LGBTQ+ in this case) have disappeared like tRump Roast' taxes/school grades. Even if we differ on various beliefs and ideologies....are we not capable of having a moral compass/heart? No one of any culture nor group should feel constant belittling, shame bashing, daily fear for their lives, fear of lack of protection from their nations government, nor should anyone have to live in a world where simply because you're different from a major group should you be ostracized let alone chastised for you being/representing who YOU ARE!

    Thanks for making this, Steve.
    Edit, as a note to TH-cam in the vanishingly small event someone there reads this: If you have the power to remove hate from a space you control, and you do _not_ remove that hate, then you are tacitly supporting that hate. It does not matter what kind of hate it is.

    I don't always agree with your views, especially with some of your Star Trek videos, but I do agree with you here, and I wish more people would speak up and actively deride those who call for 'tolerance' and 'measured responses' with intolerable things such as racism and hate based phobias. Hating someone because of their sexuality, gender identity, atheism, and so forth, is no different than hating someone because of the their skin colour or nationality, and makes about as much sense as people hating others because they're allergic to peanuts... which unfortunately, some very unintelligent people do.

    I am reminded of a quote by one of my favourite DS-9 characters: "You can't judge people by what they think or say. Only by what they do." - Kira Nerys. I feel this is something more people need to bear in mind with especially public figures. It's easy enough to talk a great talk and actually think (and convince others) that you're a good ally - but ultimately, it all comes down to what you actually do. Do you just slap a Pride flag on something and sell it to the LGBTQ+ community, or do you actually donate to causes that support them? Do you welcome them and allow them an equal voice on your platform, or demonitise and suppress channels featuring actual, needed and necessary educational content? On an individual level, you hit the nail on the head. You are an ally if your actions are in tune with your words. Or just if you take actual without saying anything at all. Just quietly casting your vote or donating to a charity mean just as much, if not MORE than a loudmouth who talks a good talk, but actually does nothing. So I want to commend you, as someone painted in multiple shades of rainbow, and thank you from the bottom of my heart for being an ally. You are one. And that means the world to us.

    Odd, usually I try to avoid youtube drama, but just a few hours ago I had an unfriendly little talk with an anti homosexual bigot using the word "SJW" as if it really meant anything, and now this video came out, what are the odds.

    I found Rationality rules fans to be quite irrational. Pun aside, instead of discussing the substance of RR's fuck up they mostly been busy lashing out at ACA with variations of a tone argument. If you screw up, you don't get to demand a better treatment from people who'd call you out, you don't get to demand anything really. You may be granted that courtesy, and usually this is that happens, but it's not a given. RR and his ardent supporters seems to not getting that simple rational thing. Thats the best most diplomatic interpretation of what happened. The other option is RR did this knowingly.

    As someone who is gay, thank you. This needs to be said, especially by allies of the LGBTQ+ Community, you guys hold more privilege than us, and your voices are heard. So thank you. I don't really know much about the Atheist Community, being a Christian myself, but the same thing happens in the Christian circles, even some of the LGBTQ+ Christian circles, there's a lot of intolerance out there, and it seems like people grow more hateful every year, but allies like you are the incredibly important members of the community, so thank you for your words.

    This is the reason I subscribed to this channel. I'm also worried about the tacit endorsement of intolerant bigots within the New Atheist community. To make things interesting, I'm also an evangelical Christian, and agnostic, and a socialist, and a recently graduated history major. The cognitive dissonance is hard but I find it easier to cope with my place in the world this way than to be an unequivocal supporter of Albert Camus' notion of the "absurd." I'm definitely new to being supportive of the LGBT+ community, thanks to Contra Points and Philosophy Tube. Despite by Christian stance, even I could see RR's videos as Transphobic garbage equivolent almost of saying, "love the sinner, hate the sin." My views on these topics have drastically shifted from how I used to think in High School. It was the New Atheist community that made me start to question everything, but it was college that showed me the importance of protecting marginalized groups. I'm glad to see members of the Atheist community such as yourself standing up for what is right. You're doing an amazing job with these types of videos!
