    Yes "best served cold" means you wait patiently and deliver revenge after a lot of time has passed. The main advantage is that you take yiur time and are fully prepared while the subject is taken off guard. Also the added satisfaction of the party likely having forgotten all about what happened and being hit out of nowhere.

New womens came to work with kids and started acting like some teenagers, passive agreesive behaviour to co-workers, playing favorites, gossiping, etc :) My friends mother somehow endured it till she went on retirement. Worst part, she couldn't go to her boss, cause she was a young witch as well and was ok with such behaviour.

    I always thought the "revenge is a dish best served cold" means you take the time to cool down the initial anger before you start planning your revenge. Like, the phrase "hotheaded" means your thoughts are prone to be blinded by anger, while "coolheaded" means your thoughts are calm and serene even when you're burning with anger in your heart. So, "cold" as in a mix between "coldheaded" and "ice cold", as in you're fully engaged in the mindset to do raw calculations and strategizing a most ruthless, efficient, and hard-hitting revenge as possible without your emotions negatively affecting your thinking capabilities anymore.

  • @ianmacfarlane1241
    @ianmacfarlane1241 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    The expression, "revenge is a dish best served cold" DOES mean to let the situation cool down.
    The period of 'cooling' is left to the person seeking revenge, but that's definitely how I've always taken it.

    • @kyuuchat
      @kyuuchat ปีที่แล้ว

      Late response, but not entirely wrong; however, it refers to more of a calculated revenge. Yes, you "let the situation cool down", but you're only doing so to get everything into place before you execute your plan. The reason the phrasing is the way it is is because it's cold and calculating.

    14:00 I actually did turn down $5000 to stay a month longer at a job I was quitting in my youth. I was going to a job that paid a bit more for a boss I knew I liked working for, but most importantly I was sick of being jerked around at the job I was leaving. In one year, they lost 13 of 11 IT people. That's right - they had 11 IT positions, and in the span of a year, they had to hire 13 people into them because several people didn't even make it a year before bailing.

    According to a few sites, the term "Revenge is a dish best served cold" is a variation of a line in a book in French. It means that revenge is good when you plan ahead and wait for things to fall into place.

    "Revenge is a dish best served cold!" actually means wait for your chance and then take a swift/cruel revenge. Revenge is intentionally brutal on its own, but it's better if you wait for the right opportunity to exact it-generally when the person least expects it. A calculated revenge is better than an on-the-spot revenge. You can do it LEGALLY so that the person can't really retaliate against you without making themselves look all the worse for doing so. Legal revenge is always the best revenge.

    I never even thought of "revenge is a dish best served cold" could have a meaning other than letting time pass before finally dishing out the revenge. Now that you say that I could *see* it meaning merciless but I've always thought it was like... waiting until the other person forgot their transgression almost entirely before finally screwing them over much later.

    The Revenge is a dish best served cold is a phrase from a very old French book. It means it's better when it is waited on, meticulously plotted and when the other person really isn't expecting it anymore or has been fearing it for a long time (like an impending doom). The implications of this phrase are that the deliverer of this revenge is somewhat dispassionate in the delivery, at least in public as it is often used when the saboteurs are in close proximity to the target. It also means you plan better revenge when you are calm, as opposed to the more hot headed phrase "when planning on revenge, dig 2 graves." (Art of War)

    "revenge is a dish best served cold" is believed to be originally French, from sometime between the 1750's to 1850's (it isn't quite clear on the exact date as there are a lot of false originators). It expresses the notion that vengeance is more satisfying when exacted some time after the harm that instigated it. To create more retribution against your foe.

  • @Ragehunger

    Last story had me thinking of something that a lot of people seem to forget: Your employer doesn't own you. If you have a valid enough reason to take days off, they legally shouldn't be able to (and usually can't) make you come in those days. It is _their_ responsibility to cover any crucial positions in any of their employees' absence, not yours. They might retaliate by threatening significant pay cuts or outright terminate you, as bad employers do, but as long as you play by the books and document everything you need in case you feel like you have to take it to court later, they can try their best to make you act like their slave.

  • @djknit
    @djknit 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've always thought that "best served cold" has 2 meanings that work together. The first is that it is best to wait some time like OP was saying. The other is that is in cold blood because you have waited long enough that it's not just a "hot" angry reaction, but it's cold and calculated.

    I never even heard of the interpretation of that phrase using "cold" as ruthless. Every example I'd seen had always been in the context of waiting until the person least expects it, and taking the time to plan it out perfectly. Don't feel bad though, because I brought it up to my roommate, and they also thought it meant to be as ruthless as possible

    To clown on my dad, we’ve gotten In arguments after he has tried to joke about his staff’s pay. Like if you cant afford to pay them at least decently, either don’t hire all of them or actually move to a practice with multiple doctors so employees are properly paid (he’s a doctor with a solo practice. You can imagine how well it goes).
