When he became weak and felt death will come soon he went to his home Neudeck and when his doctor examined him he asked him "Is friend Death alredy in the room?" the doctor replied "No, not yet, but he´s sneaking around the house." a few days later the doctor examined Hindenburg again and told him: "Now friend Death is on your doorstep" and Hindenburg replied: "Then tell him, I´ll ask him in." THAT was cool!
I think that was covered in the prelude, but I think more should be written about the wars of the Mid 19th century, Austro-Prussian, Franco-Prussian and the Crimea as European Powers consolidated at home and expanded colonially on a global scale.
Also the Second Schleswig war, and the Austro-Prussian war. Between the three they chronicle both the rise of Germany itself as a military power, but also the underlying animosity and aggression between Germany and the rest of Europe.
I still remember my great-grandmother, who was born in 1881, singing "Wir wollen uns'ren guten Kaiser Wilhelm wieder hab'n" (We want our good Emperor Wilhelm back). She referred to Wilhelm II's grandfather, Wilhelm I, who obviously WAS a good emperor and it confirms what Indy said about what many Germans thought of Wilhelm II - not very much. Sadly my great-grandmother died in 1970 when I was five years old, but that memory lives on. She never arrived in post-war democracy, but she was a great old lady.
That’s great that you were able to meet your great grandmother. It’s too bad that she did not arrive in post war democracy. My great grandfather was born in 1878 but I never did get to meet him. Just stories really. He died in 1952. I wasn’t born until 1994 so only my parents have readily told me stories.

Unfortunatly no. There was a memory board, but it was placed there in 1939, after the nazis invasion on Poland, and it was there till 1945. I guess that there's no chance to see that board again due to a difficult German-Polish history, which Hindenburg was a part of. BTW: did you know that there is a well preserved prussian-german fort here in Poznań? There is a gruop of history enthusiasts taking care of it, and they even guide tourists, dressed in the german 1st WW uniforms. Warning - small hint - it's only 275 km from Berlin ;)
Is there still a strong Prussian identity in that area of Poland? I find it interesting that the most "Germanic" identity i.e. the Prussian one, is actually from a place in Poland.
There is one very interesting about Hindenburg that in my opinion should always be mentioned: Paul von Hindenburg was the only head of state Germany ever had, that was directly and democratically elected by the people. All the others were monarchs, dictators, elected by the parliament or commisioned. It is a funnny fact considering that this honor goes to a man like Hindenburg who was not neccessarily against democracy but also not really in favor of it. I actually wanted to write this to you before you make the "who did what in WW1" on Hindenburg. Unfortunately I forgot it somehow... So it didn't make it.

Fun fact: During the Austro-Prussian war of 1866 Hindenburg became quite well acquainted with the geography of northeastern Bohemia, knowing among other things that there was a town called Broumov (back then known by its German name "Braunau"). And 60 years later he relentlessly trolled Hilter by calling him "the Czech corporal" despite knowing very well that Hitler was born in a completely different Braunau, the austrian Braunau am Inn. Since Hitler has already been peeved by the way "Reich" Germans looked down their noses at his austrian ancestry and since he hated Czechs, he didn't take this trolling well.

He was the chief of staff under von Prittwitz who after Prittwitz was relieved, planned the attack and sent the divisions in motion - before H & L came and took charge - and credit for the battle. Max Hoffman did end up as chief of staff of all Russian front armies. He was a bit bitter to be forgotten at Tannenberg - he said later,"See - this is where Hindenburg slept before the battle, this is where Hindenburg slept after the battle, and this is where Hindenburg slept during the battle."

Not exactly. There were many battles that were prequels of ww1. Some of them were closer in being technology advanced as ww1.
I'd say the napoleonic wars are the proto-world wars.
