Roti is a type of flatbread that is a staple food in many parts of the world, including South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean. The history of roti can be traced back thousands of years to the Indus Valley Civilization, which existed from around 3300 BCE to 1300 BCE. The people of this civilization made flatbreads from wheat and other grains, which they would cook on hot stones or in clay ovens.
Over time, the recipe for roti evolved and spread to other parts of the world. In India, for example, roti became a popular food during the Mughal Empire, which lasted from 1526 to 1857. The Mughals introduced many new foods and cooking techniques to India, including the use of tandoor ovens to cook bread. This led to the creation of a new type of roti called naan, which is made with a leavening agent and cooked in a tandoor.
In the Caribbean, roti was brought by indentured servants from India who were brought to work on sugar plantations in the 19th and early 20th centuries. These workers adapted the recipe for roti to use local ingredients and created a new type of roti called "dhalpuri," which is stuffed with seasoned split peas and cooked on a hot griddle.
Today, roti is enjoyed all over the world and is often served with curries, stews, and other dishes. It has become a symbol of the cultural heritage of many countries, and its history reflects the diverse influences that have shaped the world's cuisi isne.
