      @@dragoon14270 That's an issue of buying power between countries. Those ingredients would be much cheaper in India than where they were actually bought, but compared to what other foods can be bought in that area, it's very cheap. Cost of food in general is much less in India than in the US, which is pretty interesting.

      Onions and potatoes. They are in my top 5 foods for a reason. Cheap and great to learn knife technique. Also taste pretty decent when cooked in oil/butter and seasoned nicely.
      Add some flour into the mix to make sauces. Buy chickens whole to use everything the butcher throws away and charges you for their work.
      Rice is another one of my top 5. If you buy in bulk it's cheap for good rice. I buy my rice in 25kg bags (about 55lbs).
      No joke look at how much a 20lb bag of onions and potatoes cost, they can be stored for months in a pantry if done correctly.
      Good luck in your learning and I hope you enjoy the process and the dishes.
      Edit: If you have fishing gear... A can of white corn and a can of tuna packed in oil, mix them together. Some of the best bait for fishing, for like $2 you can have bait for a lot of different kinds of fish. You can check garage sales for a cheap rod and reel set up, the person selling it might have more gear for cheap too.

    At first I was shocked that you could cook Indian food with less than twenty dollars. But then you didn’t have to include the cost of the vast array of spices that make even modestly priced ingredients taste amazing. Stocking up on all the spices initially can set you back quite a bit. At least if your buying them in the US.

      The problem is you guys buy a lot of spices good enough for six months and then use it once or twice in a month, if you eat Indian food regularly the cost for spices per meal is very less.

    • @threegoodeyes7400
      @threegoodeyes7400 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ayanmukherjee8255 Very true. I don’t know of a place near me that sells all the various spices by weight. You do have to buy more than what you need for one or two recipes. Much more cost effective if those ingredients are incorporated into the majority of your meals. And the freshness aspect you point out is very important. Trying to use up all those spices before they grow stale is difficult if that’s not how you regularly cook. But I must admit if you want your dishes to really taste authentic and have that depth of flavor it’s worth buying the different spices.
