Every night I would be awaken by my big brother Steve playing his guetar while watching Johnny Carson. I would lie there wondering how the heck he was so naturally gifted? I never complained and I'm glad I didn't. I sure do miss falling asleep to your music! You've always been a good and honest MAN and I know your up there playing music in HEAVEN. Miss you bro!
It makes me appreciate more what Duane did!
Hey GMeyers,
Thank you. I keep my action somewhere between medium and low and I use 11s which also helps. Have to have a light touch to keep from fretting the slide - just takes a little practice. My next guitar will be an SG - my LP is getting to be kinda heavy after a few sets. Thanks for listening.
Did this in standard tuning. I know - many people tell me that's not what Duane played it in but I like to play Dickey's parts too which, of course,
was in standard.
Thanks for your kind words.
Wonderful job! Gives me an ever greater appreciation for Duane's guitar playing. Thanks for posting!
Brother Steve!!! Such a star ⭐️
Why don’t we have reels and reels of you playing your guitar?! Because you were not only talented, but modest too. You don’t even show your sweet gorgeous face...
Thank you Lord for letting us have him for a while ❤️😇🎸
I’m sure Steve’s a hit up there too. Love you Steve forever 🥰
Nice! I am as impressed with your slide playing as your abilty to play dickeys solo with 3 fingers! Awesome work!
Yes Michael - Duane was a treasure - we can only imagine what he'd be capable of today.
You've nailed both guitar parts note for note. Great job!
Hey Dog....:)
Lots of great players have come from this area.
I've been to Sandlin's house a number of times and he has pictures of Duane and Clapton and others playing that I've never seen before. I'm just lucky to know them.
I spent several years as a Bluesman and now that I'm older I plan to return to it......my kids are grown and I can now get back to it....YOU are a great player and I eagerly await your next offering......and I'd LOVE to play with you Bro...Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Yes, you are right - he did play in both open and standard tunings. He was moving more into open tunings as time went by - but I'm still not totally convinced that he played SB in open E. Everyone says he did but after learning it in standard I can see that maybe he did play it that way. But again, you are right, he could play it however he wanted - he was the master.
BTW Warren Haynes plays slide in standard.
Love the Dickey Solo Bro!!!!!
Hey weatheredbrethren,
Thanks for the advice, however I also play Dickey's solo so open E isn't really an option.
I play in a classic rock/southern rock band and we do a lot of Allman Bros tunes - so I do this on many of their other tunes as well. Done Somebody Wrong - Ramblin Man - Stand back - You Don't Love Me - etc etc
Thanks for takin a listen.
@IsoSlide Thanks!
Yes it is standard tuning. I know I should probably learn this in open E - but I love to play Dickey's parts too... and to me the song ain't quite the same without them. You play very well. Great technique. I'd like to hear you with just a bit more sustain/distortion. Please send me a link when you add more stuff. I'm going to record and post "Done Somebody Wrong" soon. Another one of my favorites from the Fillmore Album.
Keep on Slidin my friend...
this is beautiful!
Hey pageluvva - Thank You Brother - Wow - hearing comments like that really inspire me.
I don't know what the exact measurement is on my action - but it is probably what you'd consider medium. If you set the action too low like a lot of players do, you lose tone. But too high and it is more difficult to fret the strings. So I try to adjust to get the best of both. Also, I use DR Pure Blues .11s. These have great tone and sustain - much fatter sound than lighter gauge strings. Thanks for the post
Holy shit dude!!! NICE FUCKING JOB!!! Duane is lookin down and smiles every time someone plays this!
You did great! Amazing quality on the way of playing, you just reach the right notes, congrats!! I hope someday I get this precision with the slide! haahahaha
Hey jackster - Thank You for your kind words. You can get this backing track and plenty of other good ones at the site named in the "show more" info section.
Others have asked who is singing - I really don't know, but he's awesome. I'll try to find out who he is and post it.
peace
Just keep at it. You'll be surprised at what you can do with consistent practice.
It does take awhile to get the feel of it - but that's the key - you have to feel it.
Good luck man, you'll get it I'm sure.
So hard to play in standard, surely not for you, but someone learning that open E is a breeze. Good job.
Paul Stewart - Thanks Brother - Yeah, way too soon. Can you imagine what we're missing? He still had a lot to say. We can only dream about it.
Never heard a version of Duane in standard .
Duane in open E
Dickey took over and played it in open E
Warren plays it in standard
When Warren left for a couple years in the early '90s Derrick played it in open E
To each his own . It all sounds good .
Great man! Impressive! Now You inspire me to explore the Land of sliding on standard tuning. Thank You Very much!
Great job doing this with standard tuning. You can hardly tell. Only those of us who ate slept and drank that album can hear it.
Thanks Roscoe - Yeah, 40 some odd years later and I still think it's the best live album ever recorded - wore out many LPs, then 8 tracks, then cassettes, now I'm workin on wearing out CDs... hahaha aint it great!
HuntGroupProductions .com Even they knew that those nights at the Fillmore were magic. Them at their very best. It doesn't happen often for any band, and to catch it on record, a miracle. A great unit, but Duane's gut wrenching slide work, the best any white man (sorry to bring color into it, but I'm picky when it comes to the blues) could ever imagine, is a BIG part of what makes those recordings so good. His non-slide work is also amazing, terrifying, and he and Dicky together.....beyond description. And what I mean to say is Dwayne's playing is the only I've heard that is equal to or better than ANY blues player. I would not say that about another guitarist of my race:)
Roscoe Davis
I totally agree - I also would mention how great Dickey was. He was the perfect guitarist to bring the best out of Duane. Even though he was always in Duane's shadow, he shined very brightly as well. The planets were aligned just right when Duane and Dickey hooked up - kinda like when John & Paul met - pure musical magic.
you are great, really dig your cover
RIP our darling Steve ...
Yes, I checked out your Statesboro Blues TH-cam upload bro. Nice. You should post it as a "video reply" to my post.
Peace
no attempt there just victory.great job start to finish.
Thanks Higor - Keep on playin brother, you'll be there before you know it !
This sounds great, standard or alternate - and you covered all solos on one guitar. The critics aren't worth listening to.
Nice performance!
@fujikihirokazu
Thanks again! Your band really kicks butt! And great vocals too. Do you guys ever get over to the States? I'd love to see ya live! I think you'd be a big hit here... especially down here in the south. I'm listening to some of your other posts now - really good stuff!
Dude I keep watching it I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. Here is where I'm at it sounds hard looks easy but in fact its hard lol
@fujikihirokazu
Wow - you guys have quite the commute for rehearsals! LOL
I hope the rest of the band made it through the earthquake/tsunami ok. I pray for them and all the people in Japan - what a terrible disaster.
Yes - start in Vancouver and gig your way down to Florida - haha! Anyway, that's where I live.
Keep on Rockin!
Thanks shootergun - glad you liked it ! I'll have more coming soon... Done Somebody Wrong and Blue Sky as soon as I have time to record them.
Skydog7725
@skydog7725
Thanks Man =]
"Done Somebody Wrong" one of my Fav songs of all time!!!!
I'll make sure I check it out when you post it ;)
Very good!!! Thanks!!
You rock bro
Hahaha! You are a funny guy purp! Yeah I'm an ol hippie... been around the block, but not over the hill yet... lol
Not seeing a link - I think they filter out links to other websites.
Great!
I think it is supposed to be played in open E. That's what everybody says anyway...
I'd like to hear from someone that was there and saw first hand how Duane played this. I know that early on he played in standard but later switched to open tunings. So I really don't know for sure. Warren Haynes plays slide in standard.
As soon as I get off the boat I'm gonna fire up my esp tele and roll with it hopefully I can make it half way sound good
Yes man!
❤❤❤
Great Job !!
+k chad huber Thanks Chad - I used to play in a band with a guy named Mike Huber - any relation? ;-)
No relation to Mike that I know of I have been playing this song in standard tuning for quite a while and it sounds ok but you have really nailed I will definitely be trying to cop some of your licks your transition from slide to regular and back Is really nice.
+k chad huber Cool - yeah it's the opening song to the album that got me started way back when. Live at the Filmore is one of the greatest live recordings of all time IMHO. Good luck with your practices - your band sounds great !!
Yes standard tuning. So I can play Dickey's stuff too.
Thanks
You can play the Dickey Betts part in open E,, just remember the G string is now G sharp. I am not the guitar player you are so I am sure you can do it. So you can play both parts at a gig. Actually much easier then learning the slide part which I am still a work in progress with.
Hey Jeff - Thank You so much! I am humbled by your kind words. I don't think there is a higher compliment than to be compared to Duane. Of course, we all know that Duane was THE MASTER of slide and the rest of us can only imitate - LOL. And Yes, the great state of Alabama is where Duane made history as a session player. Lots of awesome pickers come from Alabama.
You made my day!!! I'll be posting "Done Somebody Wrong" soon.
God Bless You Too!
Nice video. I think it is much harder to play Duane's solo in standard tuning.
Just added my version of "Statesboro Blues" as a video response to yours, I played it in Open E
I would love to know what you think about my version =]
Well, man... Congrats!!! It's time for your world's contribution... You gotta teach this masterpeace! Please, record a video lesson teachin' step-by-step about how to play that! You know, man, but many guys are thinking the same but ain't tell you it here! Then, make a one or more videos (part I, part II, etc) and leave one more of your many lagacies to the world!
(sorry for my bad english, I'm brazilian and self-studied)
Thank you very much Rodrigo! I have thought about doing a "how to" video on this song. Most people want to play this in open E which is how Duane originally played it and is actually much easier. I like to play it in standard tuning so that I can include Dickey's solos. I will do my best to get to a lesson video when I have some time to do it properly.
Thanks again for your kind words.
HuntGroupProductions .com I'll be here waiting for this lesson. Man, your vibrato control is very impressive! Congrats again! I'm trynna do it... I'll get there! Ler's keep in touch, buddy! Can it be? Ya can talk to me in my facebook (facebook.com/rodrigocosta77)
I'd like to take some slide guitar tips with you.
Hey, buddy, dontcha forget nothin'? We all in the world are waitin' for your video lesson! (lol)
Hey ya skydog.
Man oh man oh man oh man that is some killer playing. You have it all, the style, the tone and that beautiful axe. Seriously that was some inspired playing. Question, how high is your action on the LP? I keep my 72 Les Paul Custom's action way high. I just like it like that. And of course the slide playing is made for it.
Cheers from Montreal.
Thanks Timothy!
Hahaha Mike - I wish I could sing like that!!! If I could I would definitely make sure you could see my lips moving! LOL
I am playing against a backing track provided by guitarbackingtracksdotcom as mentioned in the "About" section above. Don't know the name of the singer but I would give him big kudos and acknowledgement if I did. Thanks for the comment.
@howlinwolf73 Don't know his name - the backing track I used for this was a free download from Guitarbackingtracks on the internet.
Wish I knew who he was cuz he sang it great.
Man, you do a phenom job, I was impressed that you did both Duane & Dickie's leads. How/where did you get the track to play to? Who is singing? Thanks -jackster
Really thatspurp? Cool ! Please post your youtube version of Statesboro Blues.
It's been my experience that people that brag are usually empty of talent. I'm not saying you are not a player - but instead of bragging... start posting. I look forward to hearing you!!!
Yeah - the only advantage to standard tuning is if your playing non-slide riffs like Dickey's parts. Otherwise, I think open tuned slide has the potential for better sounding harmonics.
not bad man, not bad at all :)
Hey Jeff,
Merry Christmas to you and yours as well !
I'm in west central Florida - if your ever down this way send me an email - maybe we can hook up. I play with in a classic rock band but we cover a lot of blues and southern rock. I plan to post some more covers and some originals on TH-cam when I can find the time... were does it go???
Anyway - good to hear your positive comments - it means a lot to me. Thanks Amigo!!
Steve
Thanks Patrick,
Statesboro Blues is in the key of D. I play it in standard tuning.
I tuned mine to open d and its a little easier the way you play it in standard seems harder to me but then I realized I don't have to move all over like you do I can just stay in between the tenth and twelvth frets and I can pretty much hit the same notes as you in standard tuning but open d is easier on an acoustic
@thyultimate Thanks!
Holy shit!!! Standard tuning??
Was that standard tuning??
Still very nice sliding you have going on here =]
I recently uploaded my version of Statesboro Blues too, Check it out when you have time
Duane always played in open E except for a few times. excellant job in standard tuning there. how do you get that tone?
Yeah, Duane started out playing slide in standard tuning until John Hammond showed him a few open tunings one night in NY. I'm playing through a Roland micro cube amp with just the built in amp modeler set to Brit Combo. Thanks for your comments.
All that and through a Micro Cube...
Well done! I had seen this before, but it still rings true for me.
C'mon dude relax - it's not a competition. I wish you well on your musical journey.
Awesome! What key is this in?
who is the singer and band?
Great Job...But I don't think Duane played it in standard tuning any great, smart, intelligent guitarist would find the easiest way to play the song on slide, And by hearing what he is playing and the style he had you can hear it that it is in open tuning either E or D, sure it can be done in standard tuning but its more work and some of the sounds don't come out as if it was in open E or D Its a blues cover and he probly learned it open tuning.
Standard tuning no shit? I heard it was tuned in open e or some shit like that!
He’s a great guitarist..and ventriloquist ..can’t see his lips move.
dude, do yourself a favor and try this in open e. it's much easier.
Having trouble with buzzing and fretting out try one of my slides. It is bone not TB material the real deal
Hey Amigo.....I have to say that you do as great a version of Statesboro Blues as I've ever heard except of course Duane himself.
I always assumed Duane played it is open E. But hearing and watching you made a believer of me.
I am from and currently live in north Alabama. I have known and played with a lot of folks who knew and played with Duane. By all accounts he was a very down to earth guy and I am sure that he would be honored to hear the way you play Statesboro Blues
God Bless..
Duane was tuned to open e but he was playing in the key of d. All his licks, Duane’s, are around the tenth fret. If you’re tuned to open e and you bar the tenth fret you are in the key of d.
