    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Guido (Roberto Benigni) maintains a playful demeanor for his son, Joshua (Giorgio Cantarini), right to the very end.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this WW II tragicomedy, famed Italian funnyman Roberto Benigni (The Monster) portrays Guido, who moves during the '30s from the country to a Tuscan town, where he is entranced by schoolteacher Dora (Nicoletta Braschi, Benigni's real-life wife). Dora likes Guido, but she remains faithful to her pompous fiancé, so Guido has an uphill struggle. Meanwhile, anti-Semitic attitudes lead to attacks against Guido's Jewish uncle (Giustino Durano). Leaping ahead to five years later, during WW II, Guido and Dora are married and have a son Giosue (Giorgio Cantarini). After they are imprisoned in a concentration camp, Guido goes to elaborate lengths to keep his son from understanding the truth of their situation. He tells the boy that they are competing with others to win an armored tank -- so everything from food shortages to tattoos is explained as necessary for participation in the contest.

+Kbear2097 It's heartbreaking watching this a second time, and knowing that the reason he's acting goofy as he walks by his son is because he probably knows this is the last time his son will see him alive, and he wants his last memory to be seeing him happy and full of life.

I think the humor and joy is exactly what makes it all the more heartbreaking. It constrasts with the tragedy in a perfect way. If it was just all sad, it would lose its effect entirely. Those critics know nothing about the use of pathos in media.

Astro Wiz They’re the same kind of people who don’t seem to understand that humor is a method humans use to cope with some seriously messed up things.
Slightly unrelated to the critics, in WW1 it was found that the British coped with the unimaginable horrors of the trenches the best out of all the belligerents, because the British culture is steeped in gallows humor.

I decided to download the whole movie and watch it and man...that was so great. By the time I watched it my mom had gone. And at the end when I saw this scene, I remembered mom retelling me this scene. The scene is sad by itself but what also made extremely sad is that I can't tell my mom that I have watched the movie she was talking about and that we can't watch it together. I miss her so much. One thing I love about this movie is the way this scene plays out. At first I expected a big, dramatic death scene for Guido, if he were going to die at all. However, that wasn’t how the Holocaust played out, and the scene reflects that in the quick, unceremonious way Guido is executed. Bravo movie, you have my tears and my respect.
