Moving to the mountains is no joke. I recommend you sit on this land and observe it for a year, figure out where the water is and how it moves, how storms move through the area. Think about ACCESS. You are building in a stressed forest (!) and fire is a real danger. You must have multiple ways off your property. Don't move too fast just bc you want to keep us as an audience. I would just as soon see you harden your current situation with a tornado shelter. ❤❤❤

This. A underground tornado shelter/bunker is a must. And it'll take a long time, but in/out on 2 sides is necessary. Canada is burning right now. It happens.

Get yourself a topographical map of the area. A good start for planning grading plans. And determining drainage areas. The minute you start bringing food on the property, expect more frequent visits from wildlife.

Please keep bear spray on you both at all times, as you are in their territory, and extremely vulnerable. There are numerous unprovoked bear & mountain lion attacks on TH-cam. Watch and learn, so that you do not become a victim. Bear cubs are often fed. Some are rescued, raised and released, and no longer have a fear of man, but rather see them as a food source.

When I did get to writing about my loss of her and my home it’s hard to explain, but I felt more settled, more still inside. Well even that doesn’t explain it well. Take that for what you will.

I highly suggest that you cook outside so that the trailer doesn't smell like food and the wildlife won't be as tempted to break in looking for food. Once you get the cabin up there it wouldn't hurt to build a covered outdoor kitchen with a grill, countertops and a camp stI've and possibility a sink setup. You can use one of those solar charges battery for anything that needs electricity.

This is just a suggestion, I would find out if there is a company that has the mulcher machine and hire them. They will mulch you a road in a quarter of the time it would take you to do it with your electric chain saw. It is so worth doing and then you can maintain it after and trim up side branches that are in the path above with pole saw cutter. I do have to say your new property is absolutely gorgeous! Look forward to your cabin being brought up, water and solar ( I do know you want solar) is taken care of. Much peace and Happy Early 4th of July to you both and your children. ~peace

There are products which repel mice from the underside. And have a case of wasp spray at your disposal. If possible, a solar powered livestock fence around the camper might help. Have fun! 👍👍👍

One hurricane of water, wind, y’all are stuck. Consider talking with old timers around your area. And the costs of a mulched/bulldozer will pay for themselves. Good luck. Just a suggestion, and maybe you've already thought of this, but you might want to contact the trucking company that will move your container/cabin onto the property and see what they need as minimums for the road into the property. How steep can the road be? How big a radius in the turns the truck/trail combination need to maneuver up the road? How wide the road needs to be? Stuff like that. It would be disappointing to get the container/cabin there and then find out you can't get it up to the desired build site.

A prior owner of that property took great care, you could see where the grid was in respect to the spacing of the trees, Yeah, there's thick undergrowth that needs to be cleared and yeah you need to take some healthy trees down in order for the canopy to flourish. Trees are starving for sunlight, lower growth also being denied direct sunlight.
    Lots of TLC required.
Being responsible land conservators, you need a tree survey and an arborist to help you make informed decisions - what comes down, what remains, what needs to be chipped, what can be milled.

From someone that has been living in the Rockies at 8,700' elevation for about seven years...I can easily imagine some of the things you guys would have to do. They were going to charge us at least $250,000 to cut a road on our property, and we said "Heck no!" and purchased a used excavator ourselves. I have now made about three miles of road on our property. I had never used an excavator before I started...
The bears should stay away more when you guys have your dogs barking on your property.
And....while you are gone from your trailer...please never leave food in the trailer that the bears can pick up the smell from... We had a bear trying to "rip" itself into one of the corners of our trailer years ago. Now, we never see bears close by with dogs barking at everything.

With 2 children to protect a pistol is easy to carry and is load enough to scare a bear away. Remember mother bears need to protect their cubs too. What a neet setting. love you 4 and look forward to watch your place take shape.

    Good luck .

Now that you're in bear country, it's a good time to learn more about how to keep yourself safe. A good tip is to wear bells on your clothing so they make noise when hiking. The noise allows bears to hear you coming from a distance and not be startled. You should also carry a pepper spray can just in case you get close to a bear. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away. It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat, or poop, and recognize the difference between black bear and brown bear scat. Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain seeds and fur and smells earthy. Brown bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smells like pepper.

Black bears can be a problem but, in my personal experience they can be as afraid of us as we are of them.
In Yosemite I had just changed into my shorts when a black bear stuck his head into our tent and grabbed my pants. Without thinking I grabbed a broom and ran after the bear yelling for him to drop my pants. I caught up to him and swatted him with my broom while screaming at him. He dropped my pants and ran off. … I might have been just lucky, but that’s my experience with black bears (he might have been a brown bear, it was 50 plus years ago).

@@jt1364 When you are part of a loving family who shares space with you it is not "just a plot of land" even when part of a larger ranch. The space you build and improve on becomes your home even if you do not own it. Spencer and his family including his grandfather are blessed in each other. TY for bringing to light the trust Spencer's grandfather has in him to bring the land he has allowed Spencer to inhabit to a healthy home environment. In Texas many fathers and grandfathers have shared their ranches with their sons and grandsons( or daughters and granddaughters) hoping for happiness and joy in their families. Thus it has been even before Texas was first a nation then a state. Many cultures do this for example the Quakers and the Amish. God bless and keep you. May He bring you joy into your life.

It looks like you have some reasonable basic tracks that can be used as a base for your planned access. As well as distance to "civilization", you can also consider things such as -
    - Sources of water, and water storage location
    - Disposal of waste (ie. sewer drainage and ability to soak in)
    - Base for buildings - Stable, ease of excavation, no potential for slides
    - Wildlife concerns - Fencing to protect people, gardens, domestic animals
    - Distance to neighbors - for emergency assistance
    - Commununications access
    - Management of severe snow or other emergencies such as fires
That is enough as you have likely already thought about a few of these, but having lived remotely and been isolated for 3 months at one time, these things are more important to me nowadays.

You should research food forest, most are about building it from the ground up, but I am working on changing the old forest into a food forest, by keeping the beneficial tree's, and adding plants, brushes and so to the area.
I brought mushroom spores, I have planted elderberry trees, kept trees like birch and beech, and nut producing bushes, I got 5 common food mushrooms growing on my plot.
I got different currant bushes, wild blueberries (which either the birds or deer eat 😂)
I got tons of "weeds" growing, but they're all for eating. 😊
