If I had to wear shoes in my garden all the time I wouldn't be in it very much at all. I love being grounded...it connects us to mother earth in a wonderful way.
It could be that the 'Summer Crush" did not 'fall' down. It looks to me that a deer left her fawn there while she went to graze. That's where the fawn laid down. Just a thought....
I’m liking your recent focus on making a garden “your own” - from pruning back perennials when and if you feel like it, to seeking out those underused or unknown plants. It is just so satisfying to tidy up the misbehaving plants, isn't it? Been doin' the same in my garden. I have a few things flopping that cannot be staked up that just need to go and my thought is similar "I am just not going to put up with this behavior". I have so many other things coming into beautiful bloom that they won't be missed. And I just found my beautiful Zinfin Doll hydrangea was so kindly pruned for me by some deer. I have not had any deer issues in so long that it took me by surprise. It was so full of blooms and I was so proud of it as it was dug up by snowplow driver that didn't know where the road was and plowed right down my side garden this past winter. Ah well, such is the life of a gardener in the mountains.
Best advise on this EVER. It’s gardener’s choice on whether you like a bit of froth & mess or if you’re ‘not putting up’ with the way it flopped and dried. Brilliantly explained.

My hollyhocks finally fell over Monday, and they were driving me nuts too. Looking all lazy and also making it hard for my husband to get to his truck. They got the chop ✂️ yesterday morning and I felt so much better 😁
I cut back my ladies mantel one stem at a time. There is new growth under the old leaves and I don’t want to cut them. Does it take me awhile? Yes but so worth seeing the new growth.
I find caradonna the prettiest Salvia. My experience to prevent flopping: it needs a lot of sun, little water and breathing room so nothing too close to it.
I like this kind of garden maintenance too. I need to keep a journal so I can remember what reblooms! The sound of you cutting back perennials was like music to my ears. Happy gardening.
I grow so much alchemilla Mollis. I love it edging the gardens or as a ground over with geranium bloody cranes bill for areas I ignore. I handle the cut back different ways. I usually cut back every other plant on the edge so I don’t lay the entire border edge bare. OR I twist and pull out the flowers which helps to thin out the crown of the plant. Love that flower in fresh or DRIED boquets!

The pretty pink flowers that were laying over in the middle, they may not have just fell over. It could have been an animal, like maybe a deer laid down for a little rest there. Not sure, but it's a possibility.
you're really making the case for me with Lady's Mantle, I have an aversion to it because when I was doing my floral training-I worked for someone who made us use it in everything and made us call it Alchemilla Mollis even though we used common names for everything else 🙄
Love your videos! I have May Night Salvia and it never flops... makes little babies sometimes, but never flops. I cut mine back a few weeks ago (zone 4)... hoping for a second flush of blooms. Did the deer sleep on that persicaria? Maybe that is why they went flat. I'm amazed where I find deer taking a little snooze. Your garden is looking beautiful Erin.

Erin your video came at a perfect time. My yarrow is tall, blooming and going crazy however it’s flopping over onto other plants driving me crazy. I have it corralled with string snd stakes should I just cut it back and see if it will refresh blooms. 🌸
Looks like a deer took a little nap in the middle of your stachys. I’m going to do a big chop of my monarda. In fact I may yank it. I love it but it’s in the wrong spot and just gets out of hand. Maybe I’ll try to move it ,not sure if that’s good to do right now.
Same experience with caradonna... i think it might actually be better to not cut it back all the way because a lot of side shoots and blooms appeared after just taking out the biggest blooms. It definitely reblooms either way. I wonder if leaving some stems longer at the bottom would Support it more / chelsea chop

Erin, it is Nov 1 and we still have not had a hard frost (or two) to blacken and kill many of the hosta, ligularia, and peony leaves. Can they be cut back now for winter or do we need to wait for the killing frosts? Thank you.

Erin, what is the plant behind you as you're cutting back the salvia? It almost looks like rhubarb, but that doesn't look quite right. I need to cut back the monarda, which I planted last year. Is there a trick or tip you use to keep the monarda floppiness to a minimum? I haven't had it in my garden before. Of course, our 40-60 mph wind and heavy rain, were more than likely what caused the floppiness! Also, how late is too late, to cut back fall flowering perennials, like Matrona sedum? Next spring I will definitely need to divide it ~Margie

I had a doe having her midday nap everyday on a patch of peonies and nipped on my limelight hydrangea. Somehow, she stopped for almost a month, which made me worried about her so much. Now she comes back with her new companies. To be honest, I developed a very complicated feeling about her. I checked the video with a defeated, angry but released feeling every time when I spotted her.

I live in tick/Lyme Disease country .... I wear long pants, high socks and shoes. I wouldn't dream doing flip flops and shorts, but that's just me.

It's a moving target, especially in summer when one day on the water turns it really blond and then I go and dye it darker but it doesn't last long.

Yes. Check for any pollinators or spiders that are still living off those spent blooms first.

Did you call Nepeta 'Cat's Pyjamas'? We call it catmint, but Cat's Pyjamas is so much more fun!
