Interesting fact: The composer, John Addison, was a tank officer with 30 Corps, who were the ones to build the Bailey bridge at Son, as seen in the film _A Bridge Too Far._
According to me, one of the best war movies ever. It shows very honestly the politics behind certain Allied General Staff decisions, which led to the sacrifice of the 1st UK Airborne Div. It is all well applicable nowadays ... in war and business . Trivia: Gen. Stanislav Sosabowski, the Commander of the Polish Para Brigade, was working as a man of fatigue in London's fish market and in an electrical equipment factory in the 60s... May all those souls rest in peace 🙏
Go watch the Calgary flames lose to the Canucks. WOW you are soft. Watch Don cherry too and did you cry when they took him off the air because people didn’t wear poppies? Wow dude. Wow. Just wow. Did I say wow?
Do you know about the folding bicycles the Canadian troops were obliged to use at Normandy? Had to put them together on the spot with nuts and bolts included in the kits they got. Then of course they fell apart on the road. Utterly ridiculous.

Very fitting music to go with the film. The look on Lawrence Olivier's face as he was being driven through what was left of Arnhem is what strikes me the most about the whole movie!
Melodic, stirring, and UPTEMPO intro. Never tire of this music. Like all soundtrack music, it's a wondrous collection of arrangements of the main theme. UTTERLY FANTASTIC!
A Bridge too far is one of the highest real allied powers music for the wwII historic. Also very popular in germany - by musicans. It´s really music, And it is really a moment of european history. And it is also a way to don´t destroy a bridge: It is a way to build a bridge in europe .. britains, french, germans, netherlands, polish and all of the others of our european historic family in common.
When I was in my teens this film came out. Radio 2 often played the overture. I was struck by the sheer exuberance of this piece, even as a teenager. The film has been largely forgotten but this magnificent score still sounds fresh and captivating. Quality never goes out of style.
I hope the film hasn't been completely forgotten. It's a pretty simple, Hollywoodesque style of movie, but it's honourable in the way that Dickie Attenborough films always are.
I like all these jingoistic war themes, Apocolypse Now, Battle of Britain,Great Escape, too numerous to mention all. Then go to the cemetry at Arnhem and look at all the graves and the ages of the dead.Heroes all ,not to be forgotten.
Then clearly you never actually watched this movie. One of, if not THEEE Best war movies, and ..one of the best antiwar movies. The beginning starts out with the rousing theme music to the drop... The crossing of the Neijmegan Bridge..rousing music. Then..the truce to remove the wounded, the guy playing the flute, knowing he is gonna die. the doctor looking at all the civilians caught in the middle. the deaths of those civilians like the guys son. The massacre of the Polish boys trying to help the british. The british wounded waiting for the Germans singing, "ABIDE WITH ME". Kate ter horst with the doctor pulling the cart with all they had left. her home destroyed and her husband most likely dead. The stunned look on her face. Then at the end, one of the producers who speicfically said, I WANTED TO MAKE AN ANTI WAR MOVIE, had her son, as a little boy marching with a stick behind her..with the sounds of sheep in the background. FANTASTIC WAR MOVIE YES!! Jingoistic NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@jjahsepuyeshd Jan Ter Horst did not die until the 21st century. Kate ter Horst was killed by a careless driver outside her house in 1993. The ter Horsts oldest son was killed by an unexploded anti-tank mine in the woods behind their house in 1947 (that alone is the loudest argument against war and the destruction that they cause). And now we have the Ukraine-Russia conflict. One day I pray it will all be over and my great grand children will never see armed conflict.
Funny I always saw this film as a portrayal of the waste of it all, and the overconfidence also portrayed through "Winning the war by Christmas, - HA!" But to play devils advocate - how in God's name did Monty expect to get to Arnhem in 2-3 days 60 odd miles? He was a cautious General in North Afrika, and in taking Caen also. He was likely wanting to prove himself more daring than his own reputation prior to Market Garden. I like the bit in the movie where Bittrich grants the 1st Airborne a reprieve (And the townsfolk of Arnhem!) to tend to the wounded and bury the dead, he was an SS Officer was Bittrich, kind of puts a spin on things doesn't it?
My uncle was a Green Beret who parachuted into Arnhem during that campaign. They hid in a house, all his friends were knifed and he survived by laying in a ditch. My brother remembers when he used to come around and there was a knock at the door, he used to hide under the table saying, 'The Germans are coming!' Sad what war does to people (the little people mostly), because politicians and businessmen (mostly men) have all their crap views and greed motives. This film incidentally still glamourises war, Robert Redford heroically going through enemy lines was just naff. Still, the music is good apart from the patriotic undertones.
Yeah, there are some pretty naff parts of the film, especially to flatter the American market. Redford, O'Neil, and James Caan. What has the James Caan section to do with anything? There are many worse war movies nonetheless.
All the heroes that were there,to stop Nazi oppression and death, thank God for their bravery, and sacrifice, they will always be heroes of valentry.

The original album liner says that he was in a Sherman that got hit. He got out but two buddies didn't and he dedicated this album to their memories.
tankers don't build bridges...his unit probably waited patiently for the Royal Engineers ;-)

I knew a man in Gary who came out of Market Garden all intact, 101st Airborne Division. He was a very astute guy to listen to. And brave as hell.
As a Canadian Military Veteran, every time I hear this piece of music, my heart swells and tears come to my eyes
You reported me? Omg dude 🤣🤣🤣

Nostalgic! I was about 9 when I watched the movie in a theatre with my family.

Antony Beevor's book on Market Garden is very, very, very damning. Monty held back information and didn't invite crucial officers to meetings...

I love this tune. God Bless them all...those brave men.❤👑
John Addison was an officer in the 23rd Hussars and was part of XXX Corps during Market Garden.
What is phenomenal is that all the music fits together. Not a dull moment in the score. Wondrous theme and variations! I loop this! I salute this!
One of the best soundtracks by John Addison. Thank you for your magnificent work.

I love the prevailing devil-may-care atmosphere of this composition.
