I'm pretty sure it's just regular undertale, set back when chara/azzy were alive. The dream sequence is basically trying to explain why Chara fell down (we all know it was probably to kill herself, but why did she want to?)
You know, when ppl think of frisk or chara’s pasts most ppl go towards abusive parents or something like that. But, Mount Ebott is probably in the middle of the Alaskan or Canadian wilds or something. That means that most ppl, especially not a physically and emotionally scarred child, can make a foot trip there. This is also why a total of 8 humans have ever fallen into the underground. Any closer to even a small village and I bet that a giant hole in the ground would spark the interest of researchers. But it’s obvious that no researchers came. Because if they did, they’d leave very specific evidence, including logs before they embarked on their trip to Ebott. And if they went missing, search and rescue crews would have been all over Ebott. My theory is that all the humans who fell into the underground were in the area because they were camping. All the items that the humans before frisk left in the underground make sense for a camper. (Accept for the ballerina things. But hey, who knows? Maybe the ballerina had a strict practice schedule even on vacation?) Anyway, frisk, being a child, could have simply wandered away from her camp site and fell into the hole. Or, if you want a darker story, her camp was attacked by a bear, mountain lion, or pack of wolves. Frisk escaped and fell into the hole. If she saw her family killed by the wild animal it’s possible that that would be part of the cause for a lot of her behaviors in the underground. Like her expressionless face. (I perceive frisk as a girl, no one fight me it doesn’t really matter, frisk was made gender neutral so the players could perceive them however they choose. Since I’m a girl I naturally perceive frisk as a girl since I put myself in the shoes of the characters I play. I don’t want an argument about their gender) Anyway, this is just my observations.
