- A 36-year-old former teacher was sentenced Thursday after admitting to sexually battering a teenage boy.
Senior District Judge Stephen Dunn sentenced Jessica Lawson to a minimum of two years and a maximum of 20 years in prison. She will also be required to register as a sex offender and attend sex offender treatment in prison, and when she is released on parole.

ME ME ME all the way!!!
Many people have had marital problems, among other troubles. They do not use it as an excuse to molest children. She was in a position of authority and trust. As a parent, I could not forgive her.
Forgiveness doesn't mean what most people think it means. It just means that you let go of the anger, which harms no one but the angry person. I have chosen to forgive many times, because I wanted to be free from stewing about something that can't be changed. That being said, forgiveness doesn't mean that you release the person who hurt you from suffering any consequences for their actions. That's up to God, imo. I just refuse to hang onto the anger of being wronged.
@@Bevaboo @Bevaboo In light of your explanation of the objective of forgiveness ('letting go of the anger, which only harms the angered person'), can you explain -- as an apparent _believer:_
Why, then, are you taught to pray to "the Almighty", "Forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who have sinned against us."?
Are you counseling your God to let go of his anger against you, so that _he_ is not harmed by his own anger?
@@u.synlig - I do believe that people anger God when they disobey Him, so I am asking Him to let go of that anger. It doesn't mean I won't pay the consequences of my sin. For example, if I break the law by speeding, I may still have to pay a speeding ticket. I don't think that God is harmed by His anger, but my sin does damage my relationship with Him and I should ask forgiveness, much like I'd ask my dad forgiveness if I insulted him.
@@Bevaboo That is an interesting reply. 👍
I am so tired of the double standard of injustice, where women get lower sentences than men do for the exact same crime.
Not always.
@@loveforeignaccents Almost always.
In Idaho- That judge must be her bishop
Poor choices??? Are you kidding me??? All I hear are excuses 😡
It's called rape, not "having sex". He was a minor therefore cannot consent.

We all know what it is.
That poor kid, I'm sure he hated every part of too, Where were these teacher when I was a Kid WTF
She deserves the max sentence. Abusing children is one of the worst crimes a person can commit.
Whatever. Maybe you should worry about our open borders.
I don't know enough of the specifics, but there is a big difference between abuse that is forced upon someone, unwillingly, at the age of 16/17, and willingly, notwithstanding that I understand the law in Idaho sets the age of consent as being 18, unlike other states where it is lower.
I think a maximum sentence would be appropriate for someone that didn't cooperate, that didn't plead guilty, that had multiple victims, and if the victims ages were a lot younger. These are the factors that go into determining a sentence, so given all that, if this case did deserve the maximum sentence, what about those who do far worse? Hence why there is a sliding scale, so that the sentence is proportionate to the circumstances of each case.
@@SeanHendy there is no difference and should be no difference.
A child cannot consent. End of discussion
That's an odd statement. What if those border crossers are doing this shit to others as well. Hurting/SA/grooming/abusing/manipulating children IS the worst and despicable along with murder. @@michaelfreeland2791

East Idaho News: sexual battery. Say it. Do not title it ‘having sex’.
Right. He is a victim. Underage kids CANNOT consent.
Two years? A man would get 30.
No he wouldn’t… it’s rare for male sex offenders to even get 6… do some research.
Disgusting!
That's terrible. As a mother of two boys, I can feel the pain the victims parents are going through . 😢😢😢

Yes. SO many of these commenters can't be bothered to read the dropdown description box. LOL!
She should be in prison for a long time.
I'm glad to see very few comments from men praising the teacher. The fact is that this kind of behavior causes psychological damage to the boys involved, including long-term severe difficulties with forming healthy relationships, understanding boundaries, consent, etc.
I graduating in 1985. I had heard of this happening. It seemed more like men with female students. It is what I heard, but back then men and boys didn't come out as much about abuse. I know that there were teachers in my jr high and high school who would grade based on what you wore. We knew that there were certain students that certain seemed to really like. We'd all figured there was something going on. No prior that I ever saw, but what goes on today, it wouldn't surprise me that it was going on even then. This is not knew. It just did not get reported as much. In fact, one student married a teacher about a year after they graduated.
Whats the sentence?? I heard 2 fixed and 18 impermanent??? What did I hear?
Senior District Judge Stephen Dunn sentenced Jessica Lawson to a minimum of two years and a maximum of 20 years in prison.
You are correct about 18 indeterminate years. That's what the judge said, but East Idaho News put 20 years in the description of the video.
Two to twenty years (2 years fixed; 18 years indeterminate).
@@u.synlig My bad. I didn't know you add them together.
She should never be allowed around minors again. If she has children she should be monitored by only having supervised visits.
She will also be required to register as a sex offender and attend sex offender treatment in prison, and when she is released on parole.
WTH is wrong with people?
My question is: I graduated in 1984-we never heard about teachers having relationships with their students until the latter part of the 90's-why is happening more & more??
Agreed. I graduated in 1986, never saw this crime back then.
Why? Because social media makes 15 the new 18
Because the internet wasn't around when you graduated. We are able to access so much more information now, nationally and internationally as well.
I graduated in 1990 in American Fork, Utah, and there was a classmate that was allegedly in a relationship (being assaulted) by a drama teacher.
I strongly disagree that it was not happening. I graduated in 1985 from a small high school in Montana. It was happening and not with just one teacher! It was kept a secret by many victims. We were afraid to tell. When they were exposed it was all swept under the rug.
So how long did she get??
2 years for sure, up to 18 years.
So the judge is already going to deny the post conviction case because he only believes it is a blame game. Should not be a judge.
Predator
Is there going to be a movie?
I heard way too many "I's" she's only worried about herself!!!
Ick.
Yeah, my ex defended you because you were soooo much better than me cuz you had 6 years of college vs my 4 years. You devistated so many families.

Oh, I remember in high school so many of my female friends trying to hook up with the good-looking male teachers. In fact, I knew one girl who had graduated the year prior and she was secretly dating one of the teachers and when she turned 18 she moved in with him.
No matter what this is highly inappropriate behavior
@@texasginaI don’t remember that being a thing in my school. We did have one girl who did the same with a teacher , and we called her names.

The judge is right, it does seem like their is an epidemic of female teachers doing this the past few years
It's just being taken more seriously now, rather than tolerated and/or seen as harmless to boys.
Does the judge ever get to the point?
No kidding, he really enjoys hearing himself talk.
More judges need to be more mean and vocal like this man.
He wasn’t mean at all. Just clear, concise, and firm. Exactly how a judge should be.
Mean?
We've seen less penalty for murder Armed Robbery and heinous violent assault....the Law needs to get it together.
So how long of a prison sentence?
2 to 18 years.
2 to 20 years (2 fixed; 18 indeterminate).
Can someone tell this judge that it is not about him. Yawn....
Wow I'm done listening to her talk about excuses. Try saying sorry BEFORE you try to make yourself look like the victim.
Over the last several years, more and more female teachers are being exposed, for having inappropriate relationships with their students. Her “poor choices”, are not an excuse for the damage done to the student, by her. I’m not sure if these relationships are a new trend or an old trend, or if we never caught female teachers before. She was supposed to be the adult and not engage in an inappropriate and damaging relationship with a child.
Were there not cameras allowed in the courtroom? I strongly feel that as extremely serious as this is.....involving a teacher having s3x with her minor student, a young child, that part of her punishment should be being humiliated by having her face broadcasted!!! Other perpetrator's have their face broadcasted when sentenced.
It's a sad deal no matter how you look at. My loving thoughts and prayers are with the victim and his family that they may find comfort and peace as they proceed into their new sense of reality. I also express my hope to the perpetrator that she might be able to meet her demons head on and be able to work on making the self improvements of change, so she will not ever do this again to another victim.
I called myself listening to this but I swear to you I couldn't tell you what her sentence is.
Cry me a river.
Well……………
What was her sentence?
The dropdown description box is your friend, dear.
The description box is wrong. 2 to 18 years.
@@smileyone1612 Two to twenty years (2 years fixed; 18 years indeterminate).
From across the pond, and I had to look this up to confirm when I heard the Judge say that the victim wasn't old enough to consent, , but it is one of the peculiarities of the US that in Idaho the age of consent is 18 but in other states it is 16.
So, the same act occurs, but depending on the state you're in, the charges would be different, given, from what I could find, the 'victim' was 16 or 17 at the time.
However, there is another potential factor, which is if she was in a position of trust (teacher) to the victim (student) for which there are often specific offences. In the UK, there is a specific offence that even if the victim is over the age of consent (16 in the UK), but under 18, that abuse of a position of trust, would still apply.
As regards the sentence, not sure what '2 fixed (years) and 18 indeterminate (years) actually means. Another peculiarity of the US legal system I guess, but there is a massive difference between 2 and 20 years and I'm not sure why at sentencing, the sentence isn't precisely determined.
She has to do a minimum of 2 years then eligible for parole but not guaranteed. She can do a max of 20 if she doesn't make parole, along with registration as a sex offender and the other punishments empossed are mandatory either way....
As to the rest of your post, there are 50 states in the United States so what's strange to you is not strange to us and viva versa..
It's not a peculiarity at all. Each of our states have a completely different set of laws. That's why "crossing state lines " when committing a crime ends up being a crime that can then be charged by the federal government. Don't even get me started trying to explain what happens between states when a criminal runs to another state and commits an additional crime and the two states get into legal fights over extradition and who gets to charge the criminal first 😂
Teacher to student is never acceptable/allowed, no matter the age of consent in the state.
@@loveforeignaccents I don't want to throw fuel on the fire, but there are 3 states in the US where incest is not against the law, regardless of familial relationship as long as they are above the age of consent, and in all three of those states the age of consent is 16.
To most people that would far more objectionable than the circumstances of this case, and yet...
@@Rubytheblueeyedwolf let me clarify, it is a peculiarity when the vast majority of the US has a lower age of consent, besides which, it doesn't appear that anything was forced. I think the bigger issue is the abuse of a position of trust in her being a teacher, and also how that is likely to have influenced the parents of the victim and their decision making.
I agree, jurisdictional fights between agencies can be messy if there aren't clearly understood protocols. Worked with many agencies, with potential overlap, but we all knew where we stood and can't think of single case where there was any confusion or disagreement. Most likely took a lot of work to get to that state of affairs.
It's a good thing she is in prison for now.
Sentence is way too low, imo. Rape should carry a penalty of life in prison.
She should of got help sooner or asked for help. In away she should not be in jail but get help what happened to her in her marriage. From 16 yes it all right but 18 is better.
should *have
She only got six months probation?
Why are the courts making such behavior by light punishments.
No. The dropdown description box is your friend, sweetheart.
2 to 18 years.
No. She was sentenced to two to twenty years (2 years fixed; 18 years indeterminate) in prison, SO-treatment, SO-registry and a 20-year 'no victim contact' order.

That poor boy, I'm sure he hated Evey part of it too ! Where were these teachers when I was going to school? WTF
Wow, I shudder to think of the lack of education that he received, based on your reply.
I think the reason this happens is because children are too mature or they think they are and little boys hormones start raging and I don't know what this woman looks like but the odds are good. She's attractive and I'm not condoning what she did. I'm just saying that whatever age this boy was the odds are good. He enjoyed her attention.
so? you're wrong, the reason 'this happens' is because the perpetrator made excuses for herself in order asault a minor
What minors think that they want is not necessarily good for them. This causes a lot of long-term psychological harm with forming healthy relationships, consent, boundaries, etc.
I think the judge talked too much
Newspaper reports the victim's age as "16 or 17." One supposes his level of maturity matters. And perhaps other details matter as well. But if there's a double standard, there should be! Maybe one or two years and costs would have been right, but not the indeterminate eighteen on top. And in my opinion, no comparison whatsoever between a woman and a 16-17 year old boy, and a man and a 16-17 year old girl.
well the law doesn't account for your (ridiculous) opinion
@@jessiemacdonald9826 Why ridiculous? Or is it your sensibilities that are ruffled? To which one can only say it's not about you - or me. At "16-17" he's old enough to do a lot of things, including driving, hunting for sport, and joining the army and being trained to fight and kill. And what about the tremendous guilt he is likely to suffer - never mind whether or not he should - because she's going to prison. Yes, hers a crime and a serious one, but the punishment should fit the crime.
This often causes long-lasting psychological harm to the boys involved, including difficulties forming healthy relationships, boundaries, consent, etc. Do you think that it should be legal?
@@scottcharney1091 Community wisdom says not, and I don't second guess that. But the legal process is not therapy nor intended to be and should not be confused with it or any need for it. The question in my mind is if the punishment fits the crime, and in my opinion it was too harsh. And I wonder at the damage caused by the process and the sensationalism. That is, a lot of people whose business it isn't, get to preen themselves on an involvement which for the most part is at the expense of the victim(s). But as I noted above, maybe the details matter, and I don't have those.
At least she did not try to say they were in love, because that’s even more infuriating and disgusting. I still can’t stand Mary Kay L., and she’s dead. If it’s true love, they could wait until it’s legal, but it’s not. It’s a manipulation of power against a male that they can control. Icky.
