Learning that Bae's guests had just been "encouraged" to drink the bittermelon juice before having to endure the Bae-gemite trial puts this video in a much different context . Seeing Subaru go from "this is just miso" to screaming to talking about how much she loves it again was such a wild ride as well

I feel like Vegemite is like Japan's Natto, a distinct taste and smell people either love or hate with no real in between

Miko compared it to Gohan Desuyo, which is seaweed paste fermented with soy sauce
Unlike Natto, these products doesn't look weird, they just taste weird, Natto can be appaling by just looking at one
@@tedjomuljono3052 Most people who actually stop and think about it seem to conclude that Natto's issue is texture and appearance, rather than flavour, exactly.
stuff like durian, surstromming, and maybe even spam though I think spam is more on the favored side imo.
I can't tell for sure, but i think Subaru misunderstood the scale and thought rating higher meant it was better xD Because it seemed like she did still like it at the end more than her score of it would suggest
Interesting that they talked immediatly about having it with cheese and as a broth. Thats how they have Marmite in the UK
Well, they are both yeast spreads, though vegemite (and New Zealand marmite, which has more in common with Australian vegemite than British Marmite) is a lot less... liquid.
And the meat-version (bovril) is also commonly turned into a drink.
@@shutdown9322 I've had all 3, Vegemite, Marmite, and Bovril as a kid, and I remember my mum using Bovril as like some substitute to chicken soup when we were sick lol
@@neo_child It has a lot of B vitamins which could come in handy I guess. High in sodium too which helps if it's an illness that makes you sweat a lot, like the flu/cold. Liquid too so easy on the stomach.
Yup, with cheese or on buttered toast it's brilliant, for broth I prefer bovril but I've used both marmite and vegemite as soup seasoning before when I haven't had stock cubes
It's been so long since I last saw Botan in her first outfit, so that was a blessing in of itself!
Couldn't stop laughing at Subarus reactions
If you ever try vegemite, it smell and taste fermented like miso at first, but have distinct slightly bitter aftertaste and aroma afterward (some people describe as stink). It definitely not mean to consume in large quantity at once (as some challenge in youtube might do) as it pack very condensed flavour like miso 😅. Thank you for listen to my ted talk
Yeah, a ton of people on the internet do it completely wrong and try to eat it like it's peanut butter but you really don't need much.
I actually was able to make a variant of a cheese ramen using vegemite when a friend of mine gave me a tube. All I did was treat it like concentrated soy sauce, mixing maybe 2/3rds of a teaspoon into the broth. Added some extra chili flakes, chopped scallions, and a bit of honey. Was _surprisingly_ good.

@@ascomycotinazzz Oddly, I've never found vegemite to be salty, but rather sour... then again, I'm aware that my senses are kinda off in general.

I’m loving this series so far, but I’d really like it if Bae added a history lesson about the origins of Vegemite. It was originally created from used brewer’s yeast being dumped by breweries. Vegemite was literally made because someone was told to make a spread from one of the byproducts of making beer

Botan: " This could be delicious with cheese 5:00 " The astute Lion's opinion is correct. Us Australians do indeed enjoy eating vegemite with cheese. In fact, you can buy it pre-mixed with cream cheese off the shelf in supamarkets.

I was actually wondering whether Japanese people would enjoy Vegemite. I tried some Aka Miso a few months back and as an Australian my first thought was "Wow this has a similar flavour pallate to Vegemite"
Vegemite still seems to be holding its reputation of you either love it or hate it though. Roberu and Roboco hated it, but Miko, Subaru, and Botan liked it.
This is seriously my new favourite series. I've loved vegemite since I was 2 years old and LOVE seeing people's reaction to it regardless of if they hate it or like it. Amazing and hilarious content, Bae.

Please try Miso, which Subaru and Botan mentioned, when you come to Japan, Kaigai-Niki.
Miso soup is the most common way to enjoy Miso, but you may find also it with other meals such as vegetables.

I did the same thing to my Japanese workmates, as is the Australian tradition! Their explanation of it being like a mix of miso and soy sauce was a good way to explain the taste!
