  • Michael Arden is a Presidential Scholar in the Arts, a recipient of the 2015-2016 Standout Award for Diversity and Inclusion and winner of the 2004 Tony Honor. Arden is also a Tony-nominated director for his revival of "Spring Awakening." He joined BUILD to talk about his new production, "Once on This Island," the universal tale of Ti Moune (2018 Tony Award nominee Hailey Kilgore), a fearless peasant girl in search of her place in the world, and ready to risk it all for love. Guided by the mighty island gods, Ti Moune sets out on a remarkable journey to reunite with the man who has captured her heart.

Never call Hunchback a flop! It's quite possibly the most beautiful music I've ever heard in a show.

I think he was referring to Broadway musicals. Hunchback unfortunately is unable to come to Broadway because they couldn't pay the choir singers enough to meet the Union Standards. And while the musical is getteing numerous individual productions, Michael Arden's only been able to star in it twice-those being the La Jolla and Papermill productions.

It's honestly one of the best things Disney done

I very much agree! And even if it can't come to Broadway, I think going on tour throughout the country (as well as multiple overseas productions), is probably the best choice it could have made. But oh how nice it would we could see Michael play Quasimodo just once more in person!@@lightninglarrylucian0

The entire Tony committee needs to watch this and tell me why he shouldn’t get best director. Like I cannot get over how GENIUS and passionate Michael Arden is about his art ❤️

Well.. Tony Awards somehow is not really just given based on artistic level
      It’s all a commercial thing
Not to discredit any Tony winners
But not having a Tony doesn’t mean their art is terrible

Omg I love him ❤️❤️ He’s so sincere and passionate about what he does, and that is beautiful. I like how he gives for example the hearing impaired actors from Spring Awakening the opportunity to express themselves, I really admire that 💕

One theatre I think would do great for the current 'Once on This Island' on tour is the Hale Center Theatre in Utah-considered to be the most technically-advanced theatre in the country, if not the world! It's a circular theatre with multiple rising platforms (which unfortunately might present a slight problem regarding using real sand), but it also is surrounded with multiple big screens and speakers that could add to how dynamic it can be.

it’s a goddamn crime that he didn’t get a best director nod

Actually, another theatre I've just thought about that has a circular structure and could be a great place to stage this show is the Broadway Sacramento theatre!
