Its Excellent! I just learnt some very basic fundamentals here and this got me my job. Thank you so much Dr. Gudmudsson. Grateful to you and these video efforts.

Dear Dr. Gudmundsson, new subscriber here, great channel btw :)
do you have a video that gives an overview of the contents of your book please ?
Does it contain explanations on how to calculate the airframe stresses and ultimate loads ?
This is the part about homebuilding I know least about :)
My ambition here is to design and build a foot launched aerobatic glider and I'd like to make sure I get the compromise between weight & strength within reason or better :)
I have the very basic idea of the moment area cantilever arm calculation although I am struggling with resolving trusses, but I'd always like to learn more about both and more :)
    Cheers.

Hi freezatron. Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately, I have not made such a video. If you visit amazon.com, you can look inside the book to see the Table-of-Contents. That said, my book primarily covers the conceptual design phase, during which the airplane is sized and primarily analyzed from an aerodynamic standpoint. The design of the airframe (structures) is a part of the detail design phase. Structural analysis of trusses requires knowledge of statics and if you are struggling with that you should consider taking a college class in statics. That's probably offered at your state college (assuming you're in the US). I'm sure you'll find it fun and it is also empowering, while surprisingly straight-forward knowledge to obtain. Best of luck in your design endeavor.

Thanks for the reply, I hope you might consider making such a video as it would be useful to promote your book :)
I also hope you might be open to doing a video series on the basics of the detail design phase, especially on calculating the ultimate load of a wing spar and resolving simple trusses ;)
As for college, too expensive at my age, my interest is more of a hobby than a career move as such, what I would like to achieve is enough knowledge to be able to do enough of the design work to build a prototype that's safe enough to fly and that I can then take it to an engineer to help me optimize it etc. :)

Btw, I've just had a look at statics and found a course on youtube.
Thank you for this extremely useful hint !! I'd never heard of this before :)
Another video I really hope you might make is an overview of everything a well rounded designer needs to know for the homebuilder market ;)
Would it help if I said please ? :D

@@freezatron Thank you for the ideas. I'll keep them in mind. Glad to see you are looking at Statics. I've taught that subject and it is superbly practical. Make sure you get the opinion of an experienced structural engineer before you fly anything. Mother nature can be a testy biddy, if you know what I mean. Good luck and have fun designing.

Don't worry, I know how to do a load test :)
and yes, finding a structural engineer to help verify things is a good idea.
I really hope you do the "Everything An Aspiring Aircraft Designer Needs To Know Overview" video as it has been difficult to know what to look up without knowing what the names of the subjects I need to know are called.
      Thanks for your encouragements :)

Dear Dr. Gudmundsson, I want to buy a Chinese version of the book. Where can I buy it? I checked Amazon and did not see the Chinese version. Thank you!

Me as mechanical engineer, i want to read more about aviation in each side ( design of airplane shape and do simulation theoriticaly and by computer program as well , but how can I learn sir ?
Could you guide me if there is a way in which i can be developed ? I am from Yemen sir , and it's impossible to study in abroad I'm so interested in aviation , i wish you guide me , thank you 🙏🌹

Hi Ibrahim. Thank you for your email and sorry for the late response. I thought I had already responded to you. You already have a good background being a mechanical engineer, so that is good. One thing you could do is to get my book, "General Aviation Aircraft Design." It provides you with methods to size aircraft based on desired performance and to estimate important properties ranging from cost to manufacture to weight to performance. My book provides this information in a very structured manner and, thus, I think it may be helpful to you. Unfortunately, I do not know how you can access it in Yemen. Also, you should collect as much material about aircraft and aeronautical engineering online as you possibly can. There is a lot to know. Best wishes with your aspirations.

Dear Sir, does the fuselage influence aerodynamics?

    • @dr.gudmundssonaircraftdesign
      @dr.gudmundssonaircraftdesign  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, it absolutely does. It generates lift, drag, and moments about the three axes. In general, while the drag of the fuselage is easily larger than that of the wing, its lift and moments are less. As an example, fuselage lift may be between 3-10% of the total lift. These are significant enough to have to be accounted for in performance, stability and control, and overall aerodynamics of the design. I hope this answers your question. Best wishes.
