Fun fact: in late 1975, U.S. NSA and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger told the Thai foreign minister: "You should tell the Cambodians that we will be friends with them. They are murderous thugs but we won't let that stand in our way."
After the Khmer Rouge were ousted by Vietnam the US slapped sanctions on Vietnam and blocked lMF loans to Vietnam in retaliation and also channelled tens of millions in funding and arms yearly to the Khmer Rouge resistance and voted yearly for the Khmer Rouge to retain Cambodia's seat at the UN. They also urged China to support the Khmer Rouge. Their motivation was to prevent Vietnam becoming the dominant power in lndochina.
Kissinger was misled by Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore on the issue of East Timor in 1975.

Don't forget, it was the invasion of Cambodia which Kissinger supported that destabilized the country and led to the rise of Khmer Rouge in the first place.
@@kfizzledizzle8467 Kissinger was even fine with the Khmer Rouge taking over. He even wanted to support them when the regime was sent into exile when Vietnam invaded Cambodia in 1978.

Kissinger was brilliant in the Middle East in 1973 and 1974. But S.E. Asia stumped him. Thats ok. The state dept did not good info at that time.
Ho Chi Minh blamed PM Diem for the war. Ho Chi Minh was an admirer of America. He taught his people that after the war Vietnam can become friends with the American people.
In Cambodia, Prince Sihanouk, a buddhist did not do his duty to.his people like Bhumipol, the King of the Thai people. He took on the job of Secretary of Agriculture besides being King
This was a first time in the history of Thailand. He brought the people of Thailand together.
King Bhumipol followed the example of Gautama, the founder of the buddhist faith 2500 years ago. Gautama was also from Royalty. He was a Prince.
The Khmer Rouge ( Red Khmer) were angry with the educated class for not guiding Prince Sihanouk. That anger caused them to go on a rampage killing the educated people first including anybody wearing glasses.
To the people in Cambodia, America has nothing to do with the destiny of the country. This is the way of the Buddhist faith.
