Maynard is a poet. He is the vocals for TOOL. Sometimes irreverent, sometimes funny, and often profound. The only downside to TOOL is that some of us in the fan base are a little…. Passionate in our feelings about the band.
There is a saying; "the pot calling the kettle black" that knowing would help frame this song's meaning. This saying, which personifies kitchenware in order to make a point about hypocrisy, means "to criticize someone for a fault you also possess." I think one reason I, and by extension the whole Tool Army and more, enjoy seeing Tool reaction videos so much is because watching that transition between "Over thinking, over analyzing..." the song for views into the bright eyed glow as you begin to "spiral out" with the often euphoric FEELING of "weaving 'round each new experience" and "Finding beauty in the dissonance" is just so satisfying in it's inevitability. Personally, as interesting and funny and serious and meaningful as it can be, i am not here to hear your interperatations but to ride the genuinely invoked emotional waves with you. It is an almost universal reaction to this band reguardless of who it is or how they come to listen to Tool so, although there are definitely preffered ways to organise the songs; i.e the holy gift etc., you really do not need to concern yourself too much with these things for youtube videos as it is best to immerse yourself in the experiance rather than remain conscious of being entertaining for your audience. "Keep going". Enjoy ;)
"Fuck!" @ 9:16.... I've been a diehard fan of Tool since the early 2000's and very rarely ever go a day without listening to them. I've gotta say I still have that reaction to so much of their catalog on a daily basis... It never gets old. Happy to see another person join the TOOL Army! Welcome to the club, enjoy the ride, and keep up the fantastic journey you're on. You have barely scratched the surface, my man!
So the story about the song (if you wish to know the context) is that a friend of Tool was sentenced to a jail-term for possession of Pot. But a few months later there was a news story where the judge that sentenced him was caught using opiates (morphine i believe) illegally, but all the judge got was a slap on the wrist and a story about what a thought time he had been going through framing the judge as a victim rather than a criminal. So the song is about the hypocrisy of how someone in power can get away with possession of a much more dangerous drug, with reference to the pot calling the kettle black (but its so bad he just pissed all over his kettle) Some of the lyrics can be a little hard to follow. Weeping shades of cozened indigo, Got lemon juice up in your eye? Cozened means something intended to trick or decieve. So basically its someone who is using lemon juice to produce fake tears for the camera's and telling the sob story of why its ok for the judge to use heroin cause reasons:P
First of all, I'm happy to see you've discovered the greatest living band. One suggestion: you might consider printing off lyrics or having them pulled up on another device or whatever to have them right on front of you while you're reacting. You shouldn't necessarily need to read them as you're listening to each song, but just to have easier and faster access to them when you pause to review them. My vote for your next Tool track is "The Grudge', 'Laturalus', or 'Vicarious'. Get ready to ride the spiral 🌀
3 for the new TOOL fan to try on: 46&2. Lateralus Invincible. 10,000 Days could be a timer. Feb. 3rd 2024 is exactly 10,000 days after the release of Aenema. I think it's the day Arizona Bay is created. I'm prayin for rain I'm prayin for tidal waves......
Despite what some Tool fans may say, you don’t need to go in order to see the evolution of the band. React however you want to react. Either way we are here for the journey you’re about to embark upon. Hope you get the next reaction out soon. Spiral out 🌀 Edit: their early stuff is full of angst and aggression (Opiate EP and Undertow). The Ænema album is where the band really started to transform in my opinion.
@@nickforell1 correct. Parabol/Parabola, Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned, Wings for Marie pt 1&2, and Disposition/Reflection/Triad. I would personally recommend listening to Intension and Right in Two as one reaction but it’s not necessary.
Maynard J Keenan is the master of analogy. A master of societal mirroring. The perfectionist nature of every member in this project is maddening. So many bands in the world write a great hook and develop a song around it. TOOL writes a meaningful and deep concept, and then using a mastery of poetic language arts, builds a mosaic of hooks and tapestry of meanings, creating in every song a vehicle of thought provocation. EVERY song is cathartic. Every song is a masterpiece. Every song is authentic. Every song is unique and meaningfully different. And yet also, every song is INSTANTLY recognizable as TOOL. Every time you play a song again, it is like hearing it again for the first time. No matter how many times you hear any one song, you will hear something you did not hear previous. This is the unwritten, unspoken contract that TOOL has with its fans. Every song is given it's full consideration. TOOL does not put 'filler' tracks in any album. Every note is thought through ... Imagine a book of knowledge that is forbidden but must be preserved, so the monks are tasked with encoding the entire volume of the forbidden library. The stories will read as mundane but accepted dogma to the uninitiated, unless you are gifted the cypher. This is the level of attention to detail I am trying to ascribe to TOOL's body of work. Sorry just playing on paper here. It's fun to talk about this band using language that most would call hyperbole ... until it's not. LOL
Loved your last tool reaction! So glad you reacted to more of their music! Each of the 4 members are geniuses and masters of their craft. Can’t wait for more tool!
Nailed kangaroo court btw. I really love your aunthentic reactions with great breakdowns of the lyrics! I gave u a hard time on your last T00L video but gave love also. Since your here you might as well Please do 'Danny Carey - live pneuma' video since you started so far in the discography,so you understand how each person is a master at their instrument. Then backtrack to undertow live 'sober' Edit-Eagles guitarist worked with Adam Jones on his talk box for their latest album. All the greats appreciate T00L.
When people first start listening to Tool, they naturally are drawn towards Maynards vocals and delivery/tone. What many don't realise at first, is that they are listening to the greatest drummer that's ever walked the planet!
The one exception to the “no video” would be the Sober live performance. Would really help you grasp what you are dealing with as far as Tool as performers.
Tool is a perfect storm of musical genuis melded together into a single organic sound. Going through their discography truly is a journey I think you'll enjoy from a perspective standpoint and a veiw standpoint. Spiral out friend ❤
Subbed for the Tool journey. The sheer genius and musical mastery of this band will continually astound you (“What happens when 3 aliens and an octopus walk into a recording studio?”😁). I think it’s your choice whether to explore their catalog chronologically (as others have said, they evolve a lot over time), or start with the “big hitters” and then work toward the deeper cuts. It’s all masterpieces. Spiral out! 🌀 Oh, and yes, at some point must do Pneuma drum cam video. Danny Carey is inhumanly good.
I can’t wait for you to take this quest into tool. They are 100% the band that does not have a bad song. They are like Pink Floyd with an edge. That’s how one of my past girlfriends described them when I introduced her to tool. And when she said that, all I thought was “wow that’s exactly how to describe them”. Enjoy your journey. I can’t wait to see it. Peace and love.
Man your face at the beginning says it all! I so love seeing people react to Tool for the first time. Incredible band. You should see and FEEL them live!!
These guys are second to none with there creativity, ingenuity, originality, poetic prowess and all around badassery. Oh yeah, and it sounds great too. You’re just getting started. If you start at the beginning you’ll see the rudimentary origins and the profound evolution of this band. Some people love the older, shorter and harder songs. I think the shit starts to get good with Aenima. It’s begins to put their growth on display and keeps going from their. Happy hunting 😎✌️
Tool is great with double and triple entendres. Enjoying your journey! Go with advice from the Tool Army....they won't steer you wrong. You will have an incredible journey!
Yeah, "high" has at least 3 meanings in this song, usually being implied simultaneously: 1. High & mighty - judges and legislators being imperious 2. "Crazy" - the way we'll accuse people of being "high" when they do something outrageous 3. Intoxicated on substances - don't point your finger at the populace for doing drugs when you damn well know you do them yourself
Justin is such an amazing bassist, he will forever be in my personal top 5. This song holds such a special place in my heart, it was the first song I ever attempted to learn on bass. Happy that this is the first reaction I’m ever catching from you, welcome to the rabbit hole, it’s a fun time 😁
Id go with the live version of Sober next. Not because its the best quality, but it gives you an idea what they used to be and where they came from. You also get to see the persona that Maynard has while performing.
❤ As a rabid Tool fan, I don't care how you approach this at all so long as you stay on the journey ; ) You already know some pieces belong together, and aside from that I'd say just knock yourself out! There's an undeniable underlying 'Toolness' to everything, though also a distinct evolution in their music, so worth taking a bite from a bit of everything imo. Maynard is an absolute genius level wordsmith, and there's a million things at once that can often be drawn from the lyrics. All 4 members are insane masters of their craft. All that aside, I'd say the Vic Firth drum cam video for Pneuma is a must simply so you can watch the octopus in action just the once xD
14:03 - Indigo also has spiritual significance as the color of one of the chakras - Ajna, the Third Eye Chakra. To cozen is to trick or deceive, so putting on the act of being more spiritual, more caring by faking those cares.
Right in Two and The Pot are good entry level songs into Tool. It only gets deeper in meaning from here. The Pot is an excellent double meaning song. It’s makes sense if you know all the old sayings like the pot calling the kettle black.
Nice one. always happy to rediscover these with someone else. Main references here are a nod to the saying 'pot calling the kettle black'. ie: being a hypocrite. In the title, but also 'when you pissed all over my black kettle' etc. I love how layered Maynards lyrics can be in context, even from a single line.
Perhaps a bit of clarity on the lyrics about the house of cards and that area: "Soapbox house of cards and glass so Don't go tossin' your stones around" Maynard starts with "soapbox", recalling speaking while standing on a wooden soapbox for attention allowing one to literally stand above a crowd and project your voice leading to the current turn of phrase that someone is "standing on a soapbox" when they are grandstanding about something. He then moves to "house of cards and glass," as a "house of cards" is an expression sometimes used to describe an very shaky or unsteady thing, something with the likelihood to come falling down at the slightest bump or gust of wind. He then pulls in the glass he had just mentioned with "don't go tossin' your stones around" to bring to mind the admonition that "those in glass houses should not throw stones," and further reinforces the point of the flimsiness of the "house of cards and glass" and how throwing stones from within could easily cause its destruction. It all ties in with the greater message of aggressively confronting the hypocrite/s to whom this song is directed. Also, the title, "the Pot," and the repeated lyric "piss all over my black kettle" is something Maynard is drawing together purposefully. Together, their inclusion is a proverbial idiom to a hypocrite... "If that isn't the pot calling the kettle black." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_pot_calling_the_kettle_black
Subbed to see you get your mind blown track after track… no matter if you pick from their first ep in ‘92 or from Fear Inoculum in 2019, you’re gonna have a new favorite song. Some start from the beginning, but I like the stick and move approach to the catalogue, or let the tool army guide you by doing a poll for the next track(you’ll get a lot more comments and engagement which will be good for your algo). 🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀….keep going!
Nick, this song in particular is all over the place lyrically. I still don’t fully understood it and I’ve been listening since this album came out in 2006 haha. I think that’s because Maynard has layered multiple meanings into the song using different colloquialisms and trite sayings. Maynard is having fun with the lyrics by making them at least somewhat open to the listener’s interpretation. For instance, most people hear the song name, “The Pot” and assume it is about marijuana. Maybe it is. Especially since the line “you must’ve been high” is repeated and the lyrics specifically mention ganja. However, it is ALSO clear that “pissing on my black kettle” and the song name itself is a reference to the old saying “that’s the pot calling the kettle black” which is when someone criticizes someone else for something that they themselves are guilty of too. Maynard also clearly references other sayings and colloquialisms - “kangaroo court” which is a show trial where the defendant’s guilt or innocence has been predetermined (usually guilt), “sticking your foot in your mouth”, “sticking your head up your ass”, etc. Knowing Maynard, if I had to guess at his true meaning, it’s probably him venting his anger at hypocrites who claim to care about the well being of others but are willing to use state power to lock them up for something as innocuous as smoking marijuana. “Ganja?! Please. You must have been out your mind.”
@@nickforell1 thanks again for the great content! I think I speak for most Tool fans when I say that we get a ton of enjoyment seeing others experience Tool for the first time because we wish we could go back and hear it for the first time ourselves.
👍 Great channel! Been a part of the Tool Army 30 years now and they still blow my mind and love seeing a new Tool fan born! The music and lyrics in Lateralus and Pneuma are just pure brilliance. Like others here I recommend starting from the beginning to experience their full evolution. Hope to see do reactions to A Perfect Circle and Puscifer in the future!
You just listened to Tool! And it appears that you really liked it! Ha ha! You are so in for it man. Lateralus is probably the Tooliest Tool song in their catalog. It's loosely structured on the Fibonacci sequence and it's one of their most iconic songs. I'm sure others are going to suggest it, too.
If you're making a Tool journey, when it comes time to listen to Lateralus, check it out your first time through however you'd like... then when you're finished, look up "The Holy Gift." You can rearrange the album's track listing using The Fibonacci sequence to get an album that flows more naturally from one song to the next, with multiple interpretations, etc. The title track, itself, uses the Fibonacci sequence in its writing and "construction," I guess you could say. The Fibonacci sequence also graphs out as a spiral, mathematically, and one of the song's repeated motifs is "Spiral Out." There's probably way more accurate and insightful stuff about this elsewhere on the internet... But, it's really what makes Lateralus one of the best albums ever written. Subbed, BTW! Great, insightful reactions so far, dude!
Great reaction. Tool can definitely be a little confusing when you jump in but well worth the ride! My first Tool song was a hidden track on thier first CD (I was 15 so that tells you I'm old!) The song was called Disgustipated and it's very strange when you don't have any context of the band, lol. I've seen them live 6 times and can't wait to see them again. First time I saw them they headlined the 1996 Lollapalooza tour. Saw a kid walk into a mosh pit and 30 seconds later come out spitting out a tooth! Anyway, I'm here to see you react to one of my favorite bands. The singer, Reverend Maynard James Keenan, is a genius! When you get to Lateralus just remember fibonaci sequence and see if you can find it. Not many people can. Maynard definitely thinks differently then most. He also fronted 2 other bands: Puscifer and A Perfect Circle. I just recently learned that the singer was in the army before going to art school. He also makes wine! Just some interesting but random facts! 😂
I know a lot of Tool fans can get a little over-zealous and demand that you "have to" listen to their music in a specific way... I'd suggest just listening to a song how you naturally would in your comfort zone. A detail that Tool fans overlook is that the band never provided any lyrics with their album releases until their latest, 'Fear Inoculum' (2019)... so, for about 25+ years of music, Tool fans had to pretty much figure things out on their own and share in online communities. There was never any "oh, you have to sit down with the lyrics the first time you hear a song" kind of sentiment I see these days. That being said, don't feel bad for not knowing "exactly" what a song of their is about... much of their music has been left to open interpretation and debated in communities over the years.
If one day, you listen to ticks and leeches, you HAVE to learn the backstory…why those lyrics, why the middle part of the song, why the different style. For me it’s really important to appreciate fully this song. Love your reactions.
The two you’ve done are in my top 10 maybe top 5.Others are Lateralus, The Grudge,Tempest,Decending,46 and two,Schism, Fear Inoculum,Aenima but it’s fluxing all the time
Subbed to watch your TOOL journey. I recommend starting from the beginning of their catalog so you are able to see their growth and maturity. Good luck and enjoy. ✌️
There is no order to Tool man. And don’t worry, you’re not going to screw anything up. They’re a band, they have music, listen to what you want, however you want to. Your video of “Right in Two” was great. You didn’t stop the song much, were very pointed, direct & honest w/your comments, & you really listened. Thx for that. Anyway, I’ll recommend “Third Eye.” Just make sure you’re strapped in.
Great reaction! Love the little stops and comments , funny to see coming from a non Tool fan! Would love to see a reaction to The Grudge, Stinkfist, or Vicarious. Keep up the good work man, loving it!
Cool reaction! I was a huge fan of Tool as a teenager and a young adult. 20 years later I discover reaction channels for their songs and i am here for it. Gonna take my boyfriend to see them in Montreal in November. Can't wait to watch you future reactions!
Tool has been my favorite band since before the turn of the century. I think the psych part of you would appreciate Rosetta Stoned, only with lyrics. It's a ride worth taking.
Here is my guide for tool. There is a distinct sound to tool but their songs can be vastly different. Its usually (not always) worth thinking about the meaning in tool songs (don't forget to enjoy the sound). Some songs might have a meaning that isn't obvious but noteworthy but i left as much info out as possible for yourself to discover. In some cases you should probably be in the right mood for maximum appreciation so i put that in there for those distinct cases. Good tool starter songs: The Pot (about hypocrisy and it was the first tool song i ever heard where i fell in love with the band, maybe it works for you too) Forty Six & 2 (about the next step in human evolution from 44 autosomes and 2 chromosomes to 46 & 2, its not quite as literate and just about evolving personally) Jambi (just a good song) Vicarious (you will figure it out) Aenema (angry at the world?)(Arizona bay would be formed if california would fall into the ocean - bit from comedian bill hicks) More advanced songs Right in Two (pretty calm song, but beautiful and one of my all time favorites) The Grudge (just a solid song with one of the longest growls ever) Lateralus (don't over analyse but its based on the fibonacci sequence/golden ratio) Pushit (relationship stuff, not my personal taste but ppl like it) Sober (people like the live version th-cam.com/video/u7lweNCCwS0/w-d-xo.html) Hooker With A Penis (its not what it looks like!) Eulogy (about L ron hubbard, founder of scientology) Rosetta Stoned (hard to explain...) Pneuma (good song from newest album, there is a really good drum cam video: th-cam.com/video/FssULNGSZIA/w-d-xo.html) Tempest (another good one from their newest album) Ticks and Leeches (you wanted drums right?) Stinkfist (a little fucked up) Prison Sex (more than a little fucked up) really special songs Parabol+Parabola (MAKE SURE YOU LISTEN TO THEM TOGETHER WITHOUT A BREAK! Relax and be patient) Songs that would be cool to listen before Wings Marie: Tool - Jimmy (about his childhood and leaving his mum behind after she suffered an aneurism that immobilized her) A Perfect Circle - Judith (about his mum who despite what happened to her held onto her faith and maynard couldnt understand - very angry song) Wings For Marie+10,000 Days (want to be sad?)(About Maynards mum, i really recommend looking into this more before listening as only then the emotional weight can really be felt i think) other worthy mentions: No Quarter (Led Zeppelin cover) The Patient H. Disposition + Reflection + Triad (yes all three songs in a row!) Fear Inoculum Invincible Descending Third Eye (a little out there) older tool sweat 4°
Awesome reaction. Looking forward to seeing more tool from you, some songs I’d suggest would be Eulogy, the patient, invincible, stink fist. But you really can’t go wrong with any of their songs
Glad you're delving deep! Look up 'lateralus' fibbonaci sequence. Mind blowing masterpiece! There's a few good TH-cam vids on it.🌀Think about the POT calling the kettle black. The one you dont wanna piss on after tossing any stones around glass houses! Btw-read the lyrics to 'Rosetta Stoned'!!! Diggin the reaction vids. Cool to see someone discover the Magik of Tool!
I discovered Jinjer years ago while binding Tool reactions. They are a progressive metal core band from Ukraine they tend to go a bit harder than Tool but the complexity is all there. The general introduction is Jinjer Pisces the live session but if your looking to completely get your wig split check out Jinjer Pit of Consciousness live in Kiev from 2014.
Awesome reaction! You're doing it perfectly. Listen to studio version first (with any band) and always have lyrics when listening to Tool. You pretty much got the gist of the song. The song is about general hypocrisy... THE POT....calling the kettle black 🤯. Listen to Lateralus then you'll get the spiral out reference
Yeah, if you want to go down this rabbit hole, then I highly recommend you start at the beginning of their discography with their raw anger in EP Opiate, then Hush. Working through the Undertow album, you will start to hear the complexity and questioning build, and you’ll appreciate the transformation of anger in AEnima, and climbing the mountain of enlightenment from Lateralus, 10,000 Days, and the summit of Fear Inoculum. Can’t wait to watch your journey and to see your special perspectives given your professional background. Spiral out!
Yes, welcome to TOOL ARMY. You got my sub, a tool reaction jouney from the beginning is rare. The first albums are Very dark themed, but they evolve and you could avoid spoilers!! It's like the MCU, dont start at End Game! Every song is great, there best song is the one your are listening to. Wow,I'm excited for you. Keep Going, Spiral Out 🌀 🎶 👁🗨
The story behind this song is a judge in Southern California was handing out maximum sentences for weed offenses and he got caught with heroin. The pot literally calling the kettle black.
hahaha I thought you were going to say: "I have a feeling Im going to .... absolutely love this song" lol but then you added that you will probably mess the meaning up haha We don't mind about your personal interpretation, we do have our own in the 1st listening, and I can guarantee you, that we all were there where you are listening to the song for the 1st time and there is so much going on that your eyes are popping out and your mouth jaw dropped and you just need to listen to it again, and again, and again and agaaaaain haha Welcome! your face is telling us you're already spiralling in!
Indigo is almost certainly a reference to the Chakras. Indigo is the color associated with the 6th Chakra, the "Third Eye," representing intuition and consciousness. (Tool's lyrics often reference stuff like this. There's even a song titled "Third Eye") To cozen means to obtain through deceit, so my interpretation is "weeping shades of cozen indigo" relates to dishonesty or acting in bad faith. Or perhaps it refers to a false "consciousness" illicitly obtained through drug use?
The thing about the meaning behind Tool's music is that you can't really get it wrong. It means whatever it means to you at that time. It is intended, as MJK said, to be a tool to help you on your journey. Also: I would humbly recommend not to worry about catching everything when you listen to this music as a reaction. It's too complex. You need multiple runs to peel apart the layers. It is very much an active listening band that will reward patient effort to uncover what it means for you. Focus on your immediate, gut reaction. Go back 5 or 10 minutes later and listen to it again, then focus on the lyrics, or the time shifts, or whatever else you need to.. You can do multiple reactions to a Tool song - initial, then how your understanding grew and you want to comment on specific parts and why they are important to you. TOOL fans will come to watch you learn and grow with the band.
I've always heard and read others describing Maynard's lyrics in this song as speaking to hypocrites criticizing stoners. It doesn't matter though. Tool's lyrics aren't meant to be literally heard in a right or wrong way. It's poetry and open to interpretation. This song is just so awesome to listen to. As others have said, Nick Forell, don't worry about listening to the entire Tool catalog in some kind of order. There are differences between their earlier work and their more recent release. It's all awesome. I would recommend you check out some of their earlier music videos at some point. Tool has always masterfully blended the visual with the sonic, sometimes in rather disturbing ways. However, I always liked seeing what they'd do with album art and music videos to go along with their sound. It's definitely recognizable as Tool art though. Check it out.
The old adage, “the pot calling the kettle black”. From the song, “pissed all my black kettle”. Hypocrisy- kangaroo court, “liar, lawyer what’s the difference”. This song is riddled with references about hypocrisy. Down the rabbit hole we go
Great Reaction! You hit the nail on the head as far as interpretation, although Tool songs leave interpretation relatively open. "Weeping shades of cozened indigo" = Crying...fake, dishonest, deceitful (cozened) sadness, despair (indigo, blue, sadness). Deceiving people by acting sad or remorseful. In the early 2000s, there was a push in the courts to incarcerate people for drug use (aside from trafficking).
Very good on the interpretation, you nailed it. Since your at their earlier work I would suggest doing “Sober” next. Good job bro. 👍 Weeping shades of indigo meaning, tears washing your makeup off.
I really enjoyed this video, it’s nice to partake in your genuine thought process around it. I couldn’t help cracking up at your reactions to the bass line and the rest. This band is just phenomenal. Impossible to not get carried away to this song. As for the approach to their content, I’d suggest you alternate old vs. new to get a feel for both. It’s all amazing, but there certainly is a great deal of evolution in their technical approach.
I think this song was about a specific court case about possession of pot, also just the legality of drugs and the hypocrisy of those who make those laws.
Maynard is a poet. He is the vocals for TOOL. Sometimes irreverent, sometimes funny, and often profound. The only downside to TOOL is that some of us in the fan base are a little…. Passionate in our feelings about the band.
A little passionate??? Tread carefully and choose your words carefully also. Tool army doesn't play

There is a saying; "the pot calling the kettle black" that knowing would help frame this song's meaning. This saying, which personifies kitchenware in order to make a point about hypocrisy, means "to criticize someone for a fault you also possess."
I think one reason I, and by extension the whole Tool Army and more, enjoy seeing Tool reaction videos so much is because watching that transition between "Over thinking, over analyzing..." the song for views into the bright eyed glow as you begin to "spiral out" with the often euphoric FEELING of "weaving 'round each new experience" and "Finding beauty in the dissonance" is just so satisfying in it's inevitability.

And again @ 10:49! Yes, it will happen multiple times per song :D
Thank you Trenton! So glad you enjoyed
So the song is about the hypocrisy of how someone in power can get away with possession of a much more dangerous drug, with reference to the pot calling the kettle black (but its so bad he just pissed all over his kettle)
Some of the lyrics can be a little hard to follow.
Weeping shades of cozened indigo, Got lemon juice up in your eye?
Cozened means something intended to trick or decieve. So basically its someone who is using lemon juice to produce fake tears for the camera's and telling the sob story of why its ok for the judge to use heroin cause reasons:P

Despite what some Tool fans may say, you don’t need to go in order to see the evolution of the band. React however you want to react. Either way we are here for the journey you’re about to embark upon. Hope you get the next reaction out soon. Spiral out 🌀
Edit: their early stuff is full of angst and aggression (Opiate EP and Undertow). The Ænema album is where the band really started to transform in my opinion.
That’s really good to know. Basically I can’t go wrong? I do know some songs need to be listened together
There first two albums were my favorite but all of TooL is amazing.
@@gabrielkain1 undertow and Opiate(EP) or undertow and AEnigma for me it's AEnigma and Lateralus it doesn't really matter
@@Ilikemychickenraw True there always Amazing.
Thanks for the info! Glad you’re enjoying!
What did you love about it? The inaccurate intro, or the terrible pausing! Must be being ironic!🤣
Then backtrack to undertow live 'sober'
Edit-Eagles guitarist worked with Adam Jones on his talk box for their latest album. All the greats appreciate T00L.
TOOL Army reporting for duty sir! 🫡🤘🏼. Start slow and work your way up. Enjoy the life changing ride…
Thank you! Slow and steady
Love your style of reacting! ✨
I know me and a lot more people would follow your Tool-journey from beginning to end.
Thank you Nils, that means a lot to me!
Danny Carey Live Drum Cam Video of Pneuma is a MUST!!
When people first start listening to Tool, they naturally are drawn towards Maynards vocals and delivery/tone.
What many don't realise at first, is that they are listening to the greatest drummer that's ever walked the planet!
Can’t wait to hear that unfold
The one exception to the “no video” would be the Sober live performance. Would really help you grasp what you are dealing with as far as Tool as performers.
I concur
Plus 'Pneuma' Drum Cam. 😉
Awesome reaction. I can't wait to watch your journey into Tool. I almost envy you because you are about to experience some truly great music
Spiral out! 🌀
Oh, and yes, at some point must do Pneuma drum cam video. Danny Carey is inhumanly good.
You really got to watch Tool Sober but the live version of it.
Yeah I bet live is a different story!
I always love watching someone experience tool for the first time. Welcome to the club!
Well said!
Yeah, "high" has at least 3 meanings in this song, usually being implied simultaneously:
1. High & mighty - judges and legislators being imperious
2. "Crazy" - the way we'll accuse people of being "high" when they do something outrageous
3. Intoxicated on substances - don't point your finger at the populace for doing drugs when you damn well know you do them yourself
Spiral out is a reference to the song lateralus. The pattern of the song matches the Fibonacci sequence
I’ll be getting to that soon!
Tool is a journey your going to love!🤟
"Steal, borrow, refer, save your shady inference" - this line is fantastic with "refer" doing a double as "reefer".
I am old. I've been going to TOOL shows since 91. They are one of the best bands live ever.
Perhaps a bit of clarity on the lyrics about the house of cards and that area:
"Soapbox house of cards and glass so
Don't go tossin' your stones around"
Maynard starts with "soapbox", recalling speaking while standing on a wooden soapbox for attention allowing one to literally stand above a crowd and project your voice leading to the current turn of phrase that someone is "standing on a soapbox" when they are grandstanding about something.
Wow thank you! :)
It is Awesome watching another young mind absorb the genius of 🛠️T⚙️⚙️L🛠️ 🔥🔥
Tool- sober (live) one of the best liver performances of live performances.
I’ll check it out Max!
@@nickforell1 enjoy!
Pot meet kettle, what a song. The song is simply Maynard saying you see my faults but refuse to see yours as well, hence hypocrite etc.
Realizing this much sound layering and unique time signatures coming from a three piece band with a front man is nothing short of remarkable!
Mate, even without lyrical interpretations your reaction is great just watching you appreciate the musicianship
I appreciate that!
Wow thank you for the insight. It’s nice to know that it’s open to interpretation to some regard
Man I can’t wait for your reaction to thier songs Right in Two and Stinkfist, just for the lyrical breakdown alone
If you dig Maynard’s vocals, check out his other bands A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. His wines, Caduceus Cellars, are tasty as well.
14:02 indigo is supposed to be a color that brings enlightenment. Thr third eye
Start at the beginning... Great idea. Loved both vids so far.
Vicarious is a great one to do
Okay noted!
If one day, you listen to ticks and leeches, you HAVE to learn the backstory…why those lyrics, why the middle part of the song, why the different style. For me it’s really important to appreciate fully this song. Love your reactions.
Love that song to pieces, and the backstory. 😁
It was also a foreshadow for all of the legal issues w/ the label to come
The two you’ve done are in my top 10 maybe top 5.Others are Lateralus, The Grudge,Tempest,Decending,46 and two,Schism, Fear Inoculum,Aenima but it’s fluxing all the time

Love tool ,funnily enough never thought about the lyrics more the timing, thanks for the honest thoughts
Subbed to watch your TOOL journey. I recommend starting from the beginning of their catalog so you are able to see their growth and maturity. Good luck and enjoy. ✌️
Awesome thank you!
Thanks crab! I appreciate the suggestions too
Cool reaction!
Good tool starter songs:
The Pot (about hypocrisy and it was the first tool song i ever heard where i fell in love with the band, maybe it works for you too)
Forty Six & 2 (about the next step in human evolution from 44 autosomes and 2 chromosomes to 46 & 2, its not quite as literate and just about evolving personally)
Jambi (just a good song)
Vicarious (you will figure it out)
Aenema (angry at the world?)(Arizona bay would be formed if california would fall into the ocean - bit from comedian bill hicks)
More advanced songs
Right in Two (pretty calm song, but beautiful and one of my all time favorites)
The Grudge (just a solid song with one of the longest growls ever)
Lateralus (don't over analyse but its based on the fibonacci sequence/golden ratio)
Pushit (relationship stuff, not my personal taste but ppl like it)
Sober (people like the live version th-cam.com/video/u7lweNCCwS0/w-d-xo.html)
Hooker With A Penis (its not what it looks like!)
Eulogy (about L ron hubbard, founder of scientology)
Rosetta Stoned (hard to explain...)
Pneuma (good song from newest album, there is a really good drum cam video: th-cam.com/video/FssULNGSZIA/w-d-xo.html)
Tempest (another good one from their newest album)
Ticks and Leeches (you wanted drums right?)
Stinkfist (a little fucked up)
Prison Sex (more than a little fucked up)
really special songs
Parabol+Parabola (MAKE SURE YOU LISTEN TO THEM TOGETHER WITHOUT A BREAK! Relax and be patient)
Songs that would be cool to listen before Wings Marie:
Tool - Jimmy (about his childhood and leaving his mum behind after she suffered an aneurism that immobilized her)
A Perfect Circle - Judith (about his mum who despite what happened to her held onto her faith and maynard couldnt understand - very angry song)
Wings For Marie+10,000 Days (want to be sad?)(About Maynards mum, i really recommend looking into this more before listening as only then the emotional weight can really be felt i think)
other worthy mentions:
No Quarter (Led Zeppelin cover)
The Patient
H.
Disposition + Reflection + Triad (yes all three songs in a row!)
Fear Inoculum
Invincible
Descending
Third Eye (a little out there)
older tool
sweat

Awesome reaction. Looking forward to seeing more tool from you, some songs I’d suggest would be Eulogy, the patient, invincible, stink fist. But you really can’t go wrong with any of their songs
Thank you Connor, noted!
Great reaction. There is sooo much more coming your way with TOOL. Enjoy
Thank you, I will
Once ppl learn to exercise some patience and know something is coming...Eulogy is also a great intro to their catalog song
AWWW YISSSSS! I am so stoked for this. I missed the last one. This is a great one to get stuck in with. Definitely have the lyrics handy!
Glad you're delving deep! Look up 'lateralus' fibbonaci sequence. Mind blowing masterpiece! Love this so much, highly recommend diving deeper into this band they are so far and away pioneers
“Vacarious” is next on this same album, 10,000 days. I am enjoying this wave !!!!!
Thanks Rudy, me too!
Listen to Lateralus then you'll get the spiral out reference
yeah very relatable what nick said in his video. yeah this song and band goes hard for SHO :) :D cool video!
2:47 - Yes, exactly!
The songs are very high intension. Like göthe or Schiller, that everybody in germany have to learn at school. That's real 2023.
Spiral out!
welcome to the army friend. we are here in full force
Keep Going, Spiral Out 🌀 🎶 👁🗨
Thank you so much for the guidance!
These guys are my GENERATIONS Pink Floyd. The Band members were all in HIGH SCHOOL when Floyd released their EPIC album "THE WALL." ✌
Indigo is almost certainly a reference to the Chakras. Indigo is the color associated with the 6th Chakra, the "Third Eye," representing intuition and consciousness. (Tool's lyrics often reference stuff like this. There's even a song titled "Third Eye")
To cozen means to obtain through deceit, so my interpretation is "weeping shades of cozen indigo" relates to dishonesty or acting in bad faith. Or perhaps it refers to a false "consciousness" illicitly obtained through drug use?
I think you start in the very beginning chronological order is the best with them. The evolution of the band
Welcome to the wonderful world of TOOL!!! I'm going to subscribe just to watch your TOOL journey.
Thanks Mike!
Good song choice. Fantastic reaction!
Down the rabbit hole we go
As one of the biggest TOOL fans in the world, I would say a song by song reaction, from the beginning, is the way to go. Lyrics are also a must!
Great suggestion! Thank you Robert
Great Tool song, so many, Lateralus is one of my favorites
Built on the Fibonacci Sequence
New subscriber. This Nana loves TOOL. My grandson says, whaaaat...Yes! I'm 63.😂
Awesome! Thank you! Such a cool age
