- Task 6: Build a Team
Purpose: The task centers on the continuous process of team-building within projects. While many tasks in the people domain relate to team development, task six specifically addresses certain issues related to the team development process.
Context: The Tuckman Ladder, leadership, conflict management, supporting the team, creating self-organizing teams, and servant leadership are all integral elements of building a team.
Key Enablers:
Appraise stakeholder skills: Understand the capabilities of those involved.
Reduce project resource requirement: Minimize necessary resources without compromising the project.
Continuously assess and refresh team skills: Regularly review and enhance the skills within the team to ensure alignment with project objectives.
Maintain knowledge transfer within the team: Foster a culture of sharing and learning to keep the team updated.
PM Principles: Although the PMI doesn't ask directly about specific PM principles, project managers are expected to adhere to them. These principles include creating a collaborative team environment, demonstrating leadership, and engaging with stakeholders.
In essence, "Build a Team" involves a thorough understanding of project objectives, stakeholder skills, and required resources, coupled with continuous assessment and learning, to ensure the team remains effective and aligned with the project's goals.
