Doc I’ve been watching you for years I’m a water treatment specialist Get ride of the hardness with a ion exchange system! You need to remove hardness with resin and have a system clean itself automatically!!! Rainsoft is the manufacture I represent which has been acquired by Pentair Your problem is hardness At this point no hardness in the water to mess up any rod or anything else !
How does the electrically charged anode rod stop the smell? Does it kill the residual bacteria? The video doesn’t say explicitly that this is the mechanism. Thanks.
Great question! Our Corro-Protec electric anode rod not only stops but also prevents the "rotten egg" odor in hot water by eliminating the SRB bacteria. 👃
Thank you for doing this video. I have this issue pretty bad. I recently saw what your solution was before your video, but I was skeptical. This adds some confidence for me to try it. Thanks Doc!
Doc, I followed your advice and made the chage six months ago. Zero odors thus far. How can i followup and evaluate its effectivenes with scale prevention? Have you followed up ? Thank you
Truth is Doc you don't need that zinc diode in your water heater. With all the purification you have going the diode is not going to make your heater last any longer. How do I know? Because living here in S/W Florida we have that rotten egg smell coning from the water in the aquifers. The water purification filter system we have handle all the water coming in the from wells. That smell you get from the Hot water is easily eliminated by just cutting out the anode rod from the water heater. Once a year I drain the water tank then add a gallon of pool chlorine and let it sit for about two hours. I then run the hot chlorinated water thru all the hot water pipes until I smell the strong chlorine smell. Let is]t sit for another hour then drain the tank flush the hot water lines and refill the tank. The water still runs perfectly after 12 years and no more smell.
We have a well with a softener and filters and UV filter. My problem is my AO Smith anode won’t come out with an impact wrench. I have called the plumber who installed it and he is not responding. Well he called back but that was about it. I am about to drain the thing and replace it myself. Ugh!
No gas, no beuno. Electric thankless require som much amps that you commonly need to upgrade panel, and even then you still won't have quick heating and on a well system you would be wasting tons of water waiting on the hot water to get to fixtures, especially on a large house.
What about a solution if it’s the COLD water that smells like sulfur? I have a tankless heater and all of my upstairs faucets have a sulfur smell when you turn the cold water on for about 15-20 seconds then it goes away. Very annoying
@@HowTowithDoc It doesn't matter if its 5 minutes old its well water so its highly mineral rich and corrosive. All it means if your hot water tank is going out. Hence why you can only smell it when you are running hot water. Get an American made tank next time, I'm not sure if AO Smith Signature Series is an American made product? Do your research on Bradford White they are the best!
Mr... Doc my city water is absolutely bad so I definitely have to filter my water and from research the water filtration system that does literally strip out everything including chemicals and chlorine is the zero water they do work but in my research about filtration there's one thing these companies fail to mention they operate in half trude's now would you having a high-end filtration system this might not be a problem but with all that being said when I explain what I'm going to explain I think you ought to look into it and make sure filtration is awesome and great thing but not only does it strip out any chemicals our unwanted things it strips out your minerals in the water you can buy drops and do it yourself continually and different ways but it is a problem and from what I learned the drops are still problematic there are things that are still not in the drops but because your body needs those minerals and if your body doesn't get those minerals overtime it can cause severe medical problems now there is a company that makes a thing that looks like a filter but it's not instead it has coral and other things in it and when you use it with a circulating pump taking your filtered water out of a tank and putting it through this thing once the water has the good minerals back in it it circulates that water back into the same tank from what I gather it puts the good minerals back in the water if you don't already have this you might want to look in to it I know it was bit long and I'm sorry but I thought I might put a little bird in your ear if you are not already aware of it and I'd let you know what I found in my research
Nice, but also, cheaper and all that needs to be done is to change the magnesium rod for an aluminum one. Done! Rich from This Old House explains it, magnesium is what vioently reacts to the sulfites in the well water, so unless you have city water, then change the factory magnesium to aluminum and problem solved.
Aluminum anode is the ideal replacement. Or You can just buy a Rheem Marathon unit that does not have an anode rod. Polybutylene tank so no steel for the water to attack.
Aluminum will do the same. "We consider aluminum to be a health hazard, so avoid installing anodes that contain it unless it”s clear to the owners that they must not drink or cook with hot (or once hot) water." www.watertechonline.com/home/article/15535688/replacing-anodes-getting-rid-of-odor
Will the Corro-protect keep ur water tank from corroding as efficiently as a zinc anode rod?? I have a water softner, which increases the rate that it corrodes the anode Rod and tank…that is my main concern… Also, it says that u have to remove the corro-protect and inspect it every year???

That is a zinc anode to prevent electrolysis in the tank.
Correct... watch the video.
Doc, link doesn't show the products; "page not found."
fixed
I just bought a new construction and I have the smell. Thanks for the vid!
Glad I could help!
You can also treat your tank with bleach

Good to hear. We have not put in any mineral systems which is what you would have to have.
What happens if you have a tankless water heater
I'm surprised he didn't go with a tankless water heater.

True but it also reduces scaling.
How much scaling is reduced from using this rod?

I have the same thing, also my water heater is 1 month old, should i consider replacing the rod? thank you.
If your water heater keeps on going through them, its time for a replacement.
It means you have hard water or the sediment is eating away the anode rod.
Most well water is hard water / mineral rich water anyways
It's a brand new system, 2 months old, and it's an odor issue not a corrosion issue.

I had that rod it only works for the hot water, the cold water is still rotten.

The switch doesn't always work. Read the studies on it and you'll find that it doesn't stop that bacteria

$300, you got a deal on that!
I put that electric rod in my hot water tank and still stinks like sulfur.

I have a water softner, which increases the rate that it corrodes the anode Rod and tank…that is my main concern…
Also, it says that u have to remove the corro-protect and inspect it every year???
If u take out the anode Rod completely and put nothing in…it also removes the odor instantly…but then u have no protection from corrosion…
If you can get the rod out.
