    Congrats on the 3K (plus) subscribers. I’m a newbie here, and I like your down to earth and knowledgeable style. I really like your reviews, and comparisons of different editions.
    Your video on the box set convinced me to get it, so thanks for that. A great set, and UT is likewise impressive. Looking forward to the upcoming Middle Earth material in 2021.

    I was also introduced to Tolkien by the book of a friend. It was the year the movies came out, and he brought to class a single-volume edition with a Ringwraith on the cover. He explained to me what the book was about. I was immediately hooked.

    Have you heard of the very recently announced hardback LOTR limited edition (5000 copies) from Harper Collins? It looks gorgeous. I think it’ll release late falls 2021.

      Yep I mention it at the end of my latest video (Silmarillion Illustrated). It does look very nice indeed.

    Love your videos! I’m currently collecting the Alan Lee illustrated versions of the books and came across the great tales of middle Earth box set. The issue I have is that these are currently a ‘gloss’ material compared to the matte ones I currently have (being published by Houghton Mifflin). Apparently HarperCollins halted production of their version of this box set due to the death of Christopher Tolkien which is a shame and they don’t have a date for when this will be released. Are the individual matte books (from the great tales) still worth a buy?

    Can you straighten the wonky picture frame 🖼, it’s driving me to distraction. Put up a John Howe picture instead of whatever that is?

    Great preview for 2021! Do you think it’s likely that Beren and Luthien, and Children of Hurin, will get the same illustrated edition treatment which the other books we have received in 2020/2021 had, specifically in regards to the slightly different sizes and the matt finish on the artwork? Or do you think we might just have to endure the variations?

    Has anyone else had this problem with the History of Middle Earth paperback edition where the spine of the books gets creases very easily?
    Like when you get close to the middle of the book and you pry it open the spine just bends and gets a crease... it makes it harder to read them because I wanna keep them looking as good as possible 😭

    Great video. Have just subscribed as have watched a few recently and found them really helpful/interesting. It seems to me that they are now upping their game with these 'deluxe' slip-cased editions...the painted slipcases for Unfinished Tales and The Silmarillion look fantastic....I just wish the rest of the deluxe ones were as nice. I recently sold all of my deluxe editions as, whilst they look good on a shelf, I much prefer the feel, look, readability and value of the cheaper fully illustrated hardbacks (of which the recent LOTR & Hobbit boxset is the star of the show - stunning). 100% agree with what you said in another video about 'deluxe' being just a word and, whilst I'll stick with my cheaper illustrated hardbacks, I do really like the look of Unfinished Tales and The Silmarillion.

  • @ohmohm8627

    I'm probably a newbie. Which edition is better Deluxe or illustrated ?

    • @CoasterCrazyy
      @CoasterCrazyy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If you are hardcore on collecting the "highest end" books then go for Deluxe. I prefer the illustrated as its still hardcover and a fraction the price, and for me its not worth spending the extra money to get a slipcase and lose the awesome cover art.

    • @horrudu4081
      @horrudu4081 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And I want to really advoid illustrated editions if I can since I really don't want other peoples visions to influence my own experience of the text if I could advoid it. (Exept perhaps Tolkiens own illustrations in The Hobbit and LOTR, which I do love).
      So it's just a matter of preference.

    Go to my TH-cam channel under about to see my email. I may have found a site that has the Shaping of Middle Earth GAU Published 1st in near fine. I’ll send you the link to investigate. I don’t want to post here as someone else might beat ya to it. All of my set are the US editions. It says: Publisher
    Book Club Associates By Arrangement With George Allen & Unwin. Is that the correct version you’re searching for???

    • @TalkingTolkien
      @TalkingTolkien  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the reply. Yes there were Book Club Associate editions of the first few History of Middle-earth books, they said Guild Publishing on the spine. There was also a standard George Allen & Unwin one, and unfortunately that's the one that's proving difficult! Thanks for the help though!
