I'm getting married in a few weeks at 32 years old and the relatively minor job of moving the last pieces of possessions the week before the wedding, combined with my own insecurities, and seeing how organized my civil wife is with our place already, has me in tears. I've obviously got some suppressed guilt over my lifestyle. My dear one said, "You're doing good, Pete. And Jesus and I are here for you." Writing this out again has me in tears. Writing in my journal, I'm chalking this all up to my own idea of my value. Does what I have matter? Do I matter? It hurts to be seen as vulnerable. But this chapter of CS Lewis Doodle on Mere Christianity was a perfect reminder that this will be for my maturing and perfecting. Its kind of funny, we're not living together yet, but I'm already being affected by our differences and the inevitable change all this will bring. Thanks.
God bless your partnership with your lady. May you both have a wonderful life together, find strength for the difficult bits, wonder for the awesome bits, and fun along the way ❤️🙏❤️
I've listened to CS Lewis' Mear Christianity on Audible a few times but never understood it as well as with this Doodle effect. Thank you so much for producing it.
I’ve listened to the audiobook a couple times. This was so easy to follow and so well done. Thinking I can get my kids to happily watch this with me. Bravo.
(11:06) "He who believes in Me…out of his heart will flow… " - John 7:38. 'Jesus did not say, “He who believes in Me will realize all the blessings of the fullness of God,” but, in essence, “He who believes in Me will have everything he receives escape out of him.” Our Lord’s teaching was always anti-self-realization. His purpose is not the development of a person- His purpose is to make a person exactly like Himself, and the Son of God is characterized by self-expenditure. If we believe in Jesus, it is not what we gain but what He pours through us that really counts. God’s purpose is not simply to make us beautiful, plump grapes, but to make us grapes so that He may squeeze the sweetness out of us. Our spiritual life cannot be measured by success as the world measures it, but only by what God pours through us- and we cannot measure that at all. When Mary of Bethany “broke the flask…of very costly oil…and poured it on [Jesus’] head,” it was an act for which no one else saw any special occasion; in fact, “…there were some who…said, ‘Why was this fragrant oil wasted?’ ” (Mark 14:3-4 biblehub.com/niv/mark/14.htm ). But Jesus commended Mary for her extravagant act of devotion, and said, “…wherever this gospel is preached…what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her” (Mark 14:9). Our Lord is filled with overflowing joy whenever He sees any of us doing what Mary did- not being bound by a particular set of rules, but being totally surrendered to Him. God poured out the life of His Son “that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:17 biblehub.com/niv/john/3-17.htm ). Are we prepared to pour out our lives for Him? “He who believes in Me…out of his heart will flow rivers of living water”- and hundreds of other lives will be continually refreshed. Now is the time for us to break “the flask” of our lives, to stop seeking our own satisfaction, and to pour out our lives before Him. Our Lord is asking who of us will do it for Him?' (Oswald Chambers, 'My Utmost of His Highest', 1 September, 'A Life of Pure and Holy Sacrifice').
It's funny you post this now; I've been facing the reality that, even with how far God has brought me, He is nowhere near finished with molding me. I've been far too complacent, and need to continue to submit to His plan for the sort of person I need to be.
(11:06) Check out the Oswald Chambers's daily readings below that shows the nature of Satan's false offer of divinity in the garden, and the divinity planned by God for us in Christ. “Just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men because all sinned...” Romans 5.12 'The Bible does not say that God punished the human race for one man’s sin, but that the nature of sin, namely, my claim to my right to myself, entered into the human race through one man. But it also says that another Man took upon Himself the sin of the human race and put it away- an infinitely more profound revelation (see https//biblehub.com/hebrews/9-26.htm ). The nature of sin is not immorality and wrongdoing, but the nature of self-realization which leads us to say, “I am my own god.” This nature may exhibit itself in proper morality or in improper immorality, but it always has a common basis- my claim to my right to myself. When our Lord faced either people with all the forces of evil in them, or people who were clean-living, moral, and upright, He paid no attention to the moral degradation of one, nor any attention to the moral attainment of the other. He looked at something we do not see, namely, the nature of man (see biblehub.com/john/2-25.htm ). Sin is something I am born with and cannot touch- only God touches sin through redemption. It is through the Cross of Christ that God redeemed the entire human race from the possibility of damnation through the heredity of sin. God nowhere holds a person responsible for having the heredity of sin, and does not condemn anyone because of it. Condemnation comes when I realize that Jesus Christ came to deliver me from this heredity of sin, and yet I refuse to let Him do so. From that moment I begin to get the seal of damnation. “This is the condemnation [and the critical moment], that the Light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than Light' ( biblehub.com/john/3-19.htm ). ('My Utmost for His Highest', 5 October, 'The Nature of Degeneration').'
Absolutely brilliant! 🙏🙏Thank you for creating, your time and energy!! Blessings on you and your house!! This fits in perfectly with my reading of Zechariah!😎👍👍
God's many parables spoke that many would not stay the course and follow him and in essence not go into his presence after starting to believe. ( 10 virgins, seed fell along the path, and the narrow way saying few find it.) We all must persevere and be found burning for him rather than lukewarm being spit out of his mouth.
What people forget when they are to count the cost is 1. The journey to becoming like Christ everyday is an adventure of sorts with good ending results (your spirit is being renewed day by day). 2. The person has to consider it like they would consider something like college or marriage: they have to give up a lot in order to achieve the end result and it’s process is very painful, but the dream and the end result is the most rewarding thing after it all and is most beautiful after the work is completed. The same is with Christ: He’s not saying be careful of the cost because it’s not for everyone (far be it), He’s asking you do you believe this is worth it? And if so, are you willing to sacrifice it all for Me as I did you? Are you willing to trust Him in the process and cling to the promises of His word in hope and waiting?
Copyist’s error in the description of the Wesley hymn. Jesus is missing the second S in His name. God bless you for your work in making Lewis’ work more accessible!
Thanks! BTW Jesu is a poetic name for or vocative form of Jesus in British English, which is changed in American versions I gather. See www.umc.org/en/content/love-divine-all-loves-excelling-by-charles-wesley
gods would have been better translated as little christs, that verse was aimed towards judges and rulers not our destination. Regardless very good video
The Hebrew word used is “elohim” (in Psalm 82) and the Greek word is “theos” (in John 10), so the correct translation would have to be “you are gods” in English (though little christs is a good interpretation). Also Christ applies Psalm 82.6 ('You are gods, you are all sons of the Most High') as being said by God to those "to whom the word of God came" (John 10.35) - and this is a direct reference to all the Children of Israel in 1Kings 18.31: "Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, *unto whom the word of the LORD came* saying, 'Israel shall be your name' ". So we can’t then limit "you are gods" to just the judges or leaders mentioned in the Psalm, as the word of God came to the entire nation at Mt. Sinai and they all heard it with their own ears. But, of course, those 'gods' who rejected and disbelieved the word of God (both leaders and people alike) died shamefully like men (Ps. 82.7, Jer. 16.4). Christ for a little time, having been made less than the angels because of the suffering of death, tastes death for every son who believes - bringing many sons to glory, to make complete Himself (see Heb. 2.8-9, and in 2 Peter 1:3-4 “they become partakers of the divine nature”). That’s my best take on it.
PS: Probably the link to this *'You are gods!'* text is Isaiah 42.8,17 where God says “I am the LORD; that is My name! I will not yield My glory to another (a rival god) or My praise to idols...those people who trust in idols and say to molten images, *‘You are our gods!’* will be turned back in utter shame....(BUT!) Bring My sons from afar, and My daughters from the ends of the earth - everyone called by My name *and created for My glory,* whom I have indeed formed and made.” (Isa. 43.7). Christ is the fulfillment of this promise. He is the image of the invisible God, and we, men and woman, were made to be his image also, only "in Christ", or with Christ as head. Once you get that truth sorted, and foundational, it's much easier to fight off earlier pagan pantheist or later Christian cultist versions of human divinity.
