Medusa hype! Dungeoncast has officially done my favourite three things in DND Hags, Aasimar and Medusa.

It irritates me as to how D&D has Gorgons - but it’s a big metal bull.
Edit: the myth about Medusa being a rape victim was written down after the version where she was born a monster was. I forget who wrote it, but it was written by an author with quite the anti-authoritarian bent. Myths don’t really have original versions, but it should be brought up that the rape version was fabricated.

In the victim version, she is only a victim, not even a character. Before that caught on, her head was carved into the doorways of women's shelters. She was a defender of those in need and a seeker of vengeance.

"The African Gorgon or Catoblepas as it is also known, is a black bodied beast that has the head of a pig, pink blood-shot eyes and a thin scrawny neck. Due to its thin neck and oversized head, the Catoblepas had to keep its gaze to the ground and could not lift its head. However, if anyone caught its gaze, they would die immediately. The Catoblepas lived in the highlands of Ethiopia and in southern Egypt. It was said to have a foul breath which was caused by its strange diet of poisonous plants. The name comes from the Greek word Catoblepas which means ‘"that which looks downward’."
No Idea why it's a bull.

Even in the versions where she wasn't born a monster she wasn't a rape victim. Only in Ovid's version is she a rape victim. The non-Ovid version of the story she slept with Poseidon willingly in spite of the vows she made to Athena, her patron goddess, to remain a virgin. That was why she was cursed. Not because she was screwed over by the gods, but because of her own oath breaking.

I have liked and commented! I continue to serve the petrifying dungeoncast!
Medusas hm? It's been awhile since I learned of these creatures. They are of little consequence to me as long as they stay hidden in their holes and do not rear their ugly faces. I have far more present threats to deal with. After the failed crusade I am healing nicely at least, I'll be in good enough condition to continue rooting out evil soon. Still though I suppose it would be wise to keep an eye on these creatures. For if they make a move against the good people of these lands I'll have to act, despite these injuries. Damn that yeenoghu. For now though I should continue my rest...
    No short rest this week.
First of all I want to say I'm so glad you brought up gorgons being a different monsters because I was already planning to mention them myself. I don't quite get why they didn't just call medusas gorgons, Would have made more sense to me but eh whatever.
Secondly thank you for going over medusas origin. The victim blaming for the rape is so messed up. Even if (although you didn't go over it) medusa was vain and arrogant before hand. Oh well that's just the Greek gods being the Greek gods, arrogant and spiteful. unlike the lord of knowledge who's out here dropping stories from mythology like a boss!
Anywho. My addiction is once more satisfied. Thanks for another episode guys.
Anyone who reads this have a good day. :)

It's Medusas. you only pluralize something with an i in greek or latin if the singular ends in a vowel followed by an s (octopus, octopi; alumnus, alumni) and if the singular ends in a consonant followed by s it changes into es (cyclops, cyclopes). if the singular was Medus then it would be medusi but the creature would also be male.

The reason Athena hated her was because of her and Poseidon, Athena’s temple was desecrated, and Athena already really hated Poseidon. The way I see it, it was Athena saying “you dirty my temple, I’m gunna ruin your new favourite toy”

It should be noted that only in Ovid's telling of the myth is medusa raped. In earlier versions, for example Hesiod, her intercourse with Poseidon was consensual. However she was a priestess of Athena, and did the deed inside Athena's temple. Hence why she was cursed.
And I prefer the version where Medusa had her own agency in that encounter (or encounters. Hesiod seems to imply multiple sexual encounters between her and Poseidon. One of which was in a field of flowers). And it makes more sense why she was punished. Even by Greco-Roman standards rape victims were not seen as being at fault, and were not punished for it.

Hello. I believe the reason why the greek gods hated medusa was because she was, in truth, a Libian deity, one of which aspects was culturally appropriated by the minoians, and later the greeks. Basically, Athena and her mother (the lady who zeus ate/absorbed into himself) were, at some level, aspects of this elder goddess Medusa. The mythos rationalize the change in the religion by having Athena basically first "make" Medusa, while in truth she was her younger aspect, then have a guy go kill her, thus removing her living existence, and the finally to have her head be given to her, so to still keep that aspect of herself as a weapon unto her shield.

Actually in the original version of the mess medusa purposely slept with Poseidon inside the temple of Athena which gives her every right to be pissed because she’s fucking desecrating the temple despite being one of the priests as they are with her goddesses rival

Actually the myth of Medusa’s curse is not fully accurate. One there’s two stories, one where she’s raped and another where she seduces Poseidon into the temple of Athena, which is the original one which is why Athenas so pissed. After a Greek poet who’s writings we have a lot of rewrote a lot of Greek myths making the gods much more petty and evil and the mortals much more victims, even when it pulls them out of characterization. Which with Medusa it did pull Athena out of her normal character.
