Workshop Preview: Unlocking the Secrets of Plastics with Dynamic Mechanical Analysis
Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) is a powerful technique for exploring the viscoelastic properties of plastic materials, offering invaluable insights into their mechanical behavior under various conditions. This comprehensive 4-hour workshop, " Unlocking the Secrets of Plastics with Dynamic Mechanical Analysis", is designed to equip participants with both theoretical understanding and practical skills in DMA.
Register at www.4spe.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageID=9047
Participants will begin by exploring the fundamental principles of DMA, including key concepts like storage modulus, loss modulus, and tan delta. The workshop will then delve into the viscoelastic behavior of polymers, emphasizing the importance of DMA in material characterization.
Real-world case studies on polymeric materials will provide practical examples of DMA applications in quality control, material selection, and failure analysis. The workshop will also address the advantages and limitations of DMA, and offer insight into data interpretation.
By the end of the workshop, attendees will have a solid foundation in DMA, enabling them to apply this technique effectively in their work with plastics.

    Absolutely love the ending line. Learned this in art school - if you can give the people something tactile to mess with, they won't even care there is a presentation on screen. It's also a lot easier to get people on board with ideas, because a physical object displays a lot more commitment to the idea than any amount of explaining.

    Not all claimed scientific approach appears to be "scientific" here! I study degradation science and the speaker suggests that PE turns into fragments in air (I think he meant under UV exposure) in 6 months, but is that "fragmentation" is the end point of degradation? To depolymerize into small molecules it would take hundreds of years, so our children are not being misinformed. There are lots of blame game being played by this speaker! Lots of manipulations to justify his allegations. While comparing plastic bottles with glass bottles, he just compares the volume and totally ignores the fact that glass bottles are often reused thereby increasing it's usable lifetime, whereas plastic bottles are mostly for one time use especially in the developed countries (that mostly happens to be in Europe and North America). This causes more plastic bottles in the trash. So, we require to use plastics for longer time (and stop single use of virgin plastics) instead of switching to glass. I think it would be interesting to write a detailed review on his book.

    Lossless processing of thermoplastic pharmaceutical formulations is possible with our VCM Technology. Fifty grams (50!) of material would result in 5 runs with 1 gram of representative material, and 45 grams would be returned unused for later experiments-100% yield. @David: We are happy to help to bootstrap your ideas. Feel free to reach out.

    Like Chris, I have spent more than 3 decades working in lab and was involved in recycling in 90s. I believe only what I experience. I took my friend Chris's claim to test, and put a regular grocery bag under TX sun. After 12 months (not six months) there was not a single hole in a bag. Disintegration of olefins with pro-rads or pro-oxidants is not possible in six months. Chris knows it too well. I exchanged this information with Chris. I know his intentions are well. But not everything said here is correct. Plastics cannot be recycled indefinitely. It cost more to maintain their properties even after two or three recycling. I help small companies which buy off spec and recycled materials. The cost of part failure is too large for some of them. When people in authority (Degreed scientists) on whom we depend say something, others believe everything. We all have to be extra cautious.

      How did Chris respond to you?

    • @amitkumardharia1252
      @amitkumardharia1252 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trangpham4176, he did not reply. I had posted a similar response to his comments on various posts. I also ran a poll on Linkedin to see how many others think of his claim. The majority who responded that it is false were polymer professionals. I also asked some of the scientists I know at major olefin-producing companies (Dow, Exxon, Total). Some of them laughed at it.

    • @trangpham4176
      @trangpham4176 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@amitkumardharia1252I see, thank you for the response. I thought about how addictive is added to plastic to stabilize it (I finished reading his book), which is intended to increase its shelf life, so I don't think it is that easily degradable. However, there is this point that I sit on, that if properly managed waste is either going to a landfill (where there're not many conditions for decomposition) or an incineration plant, then the topic of biodegradation or decomposition of materials is irrelevant. What do you think about this point?

    • @trangpham4176
      @trangpham4176 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, what would be your technical comment on this point? "All of the materials just mentioned degrade to smaller and smaller particles, then to molecules until, eventually, they form carbon dioxide and water. They are attacked by oxygen, heat and light but despite what you may have been told, they biodegrade as well." Is it true that if left to the elements, polymers in plastics will eventually vanish?

    • @amitkumardharia1252
      @amitkumardharia1252 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trangpham4176 Eventually, olefins which degrade via oxidation, will disintegrate if exposed to enough oxygen and UV. However, it is not possible that they will in a short time (even years). If there is enough water and bacteria can grow on it, it may break down further. Olefins are hydrophobic and hence unless modified, will not bio-degrade. Some olefins are modified with Pro-oxidation additives to enhance degradation. I have tried them as well but they do not degrade as fast as suppliers claim. The main point is that the claim - Plastics packaging made of LDPE, LLDPE, PP will disintegrate into CO2 and H2O in less than a year (he claimed six months) is utterly false.

    Where an LCA comparison succeeds for one manufactured item or process over another, to an increasing segment, manufacturing as such remains as a “problem”. The whole “industrial scale society” is “ultimately” insufficiently green or sustainable by the current models and perspectives; This resonates with a larger unspoken substrate of anti-civilization and anti-human sentiments.

    There are few points to consider: 1- ‘Green washing’ is a form of propaganda where a product or material is misrepresented as being ‘greener’ or more sustainable than it actually is. Typical examples of this are: presentation of over-optimistic LCA data, the disclosure of only some product or material properties (and the deliberate omission of others), and the use of logos and texts using letter fonts and colours that evoke associations with nature. Green washing takes place at all levels, from global A-brand owners to humble sellers of water in PET bottles. 2- You are ignoring biogenic carbon: fossil based material releases carbon that has been locked up in the ground for millions of years, while bio based material emits carbon that is part of the biogenic carbon cycle. 3- You are misleading people either deliberately or by lack of understanding LCA system boundaries, methods, and concept.

    • @phantomplastics6582
      @phantomplastics6582 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment Behnam. I list all the LCA studies on my website. Have you read them? LCA experts have and they are solid. You have not taken into account that other materials require vastly more energy to produce and that energy comes from burning fossil fuels like oil and coal. That effect outweighs the carbon content in the plastic.
