SOLVED!! Jeep 4.0 stalls when warm or put into gear. dies or rough idle fix! 4.0L electrical problem
I experienced an intermittent problem with my Jeep Wrangler TJ randomly dying for a while but it occurred so infrequently it was hard to trace. The harness was routed around a head stud at the back of the engine that had rubbed though the loom and wiring insulation causing it to short out and stall. Fairly easy low cost repair!

Ford 460 jet boat with a hydraulic Place Diverter
Takes about 30 mins before it run right, but not til temp gauge is showing good and warmed up, anything below that, it acts up and dies whats causing this ?
Mine does it til it warms up to normal temp,,,only in cold weather,,, after its good and warmed up it runs just fine,,,only when it cold, it spit spuders and dies
You showed us the problem and showed us the solution. Excellent video!!! I will check my harness tomorrow.
Great. Talk about doing some diligent work. I'm glad you found the problem and shared it with us.
very cool do you still have it?
Awesome whatever happened to this boat? I have a keaton utility 84
I sold it to an older gentleman that lived on the Lake Of The Pines. Haven't seen it since. A buddy of mine saw it getting towed down I-80 a couple years ago
That’s awesome man. If you are ever in Sacramento we are running the yellow Keaton utility out there. 1 of a kind! Thanks for getting back to me, working on anything else now?
Fantastic job at troubleshooting and in presenting the solution!
So is it still running with no issues?
Not one problem since it was fixed! It''s extremely reliable. I can take it anywhere now!
Thanks, my sons Jeep is starting to run rough and stall at times. I’ll check that spot out.
You sir are a genius!!!!!! 06 tj has same problem…… Thank you !!!
I'm glad it helped!
Good job man :)
Exalant video vary informative
Super informative great job your lucky you found it
Express Lub took my cable and pushed it behind the valve cover it would rub wires and short out the wires took a month to find what they did to me, I mount the cable on top of the valve cover.
Yes I completely thought it was my ignition switch or a vacuum. I did the trace like you did and found the dang same thing. You are appreciated 🙏🏻
Thanks for this find! That was exact same issue I had. Finally fixed. Luckily, my wires in the harness were not frayed. It was, however, the wrap around was melted or worn out from abrasion. So lifted the harness away from that bolt you shown.
You have to love Chrysler for their excellent workmanship, vision, common sense and amazing attention to detail. 🙄 I'm getting a rough idle and definitely starting my troubleshooting with the electrical first! Thanks for posting this well done video!
Nice job - Hope it's still holding up!
4 months my jeep has been doing the same thing.. it's been sitting.. I just went out started it up pull the harness and that bitch cut right off...
I did the same. I let it sit because it was unreliable. I'm glad the video helped!
@chip63ss now I've got a throttle/vacuum issue. Hooking up the purg solenoid makes the jeep sputter and die. On to the next issue!! Lol
Very nice, sometimes you just have to run it down
Helps me out, thanks!! Same issue on my '98 TJ (2.4l, still has that wiring harness on that head stud...). Was so confused! Thanks for solving!
I wish I could attach a picture here, but your Jeep is missing a piece. There is a plastic holder that attaches to the top of that head stud that you route the harness through and it keeps it above that screw. Though I bought mine used and that could be an after market fix. Mine is an 04. Could also be a factory fix for this issue.
I know the piece that you are referring to. They didn't install them until around 2003. My TJ is a 2000. I also have a 2006 LJ and it does have the harness routing bracket. I think it was a thought later in production to stop this from happening.
@@chip63ss99 yeah that makes sense. Mine new Jeep is an 04 and my Old one was an 06. Both LJs
@@topclips1872 You've owned two LJ's. I'm not the only one with a Jeep problem!
@@chip63ss99 I could not get the sheet metal to repair and restore the first one over the stupid lockdowns do to shortages and she rusted out on me. So found one that could replace her. Best vehicle I ever had.
Great video, I was contemplating getting up tomorrow and changing my fuel pump and chasing down a bad sensor. OBDI said it was a Cam Position Sensor and a MAP sensor and also my speedometer quit working. My 2006 Wrangler had died on the road twice before after reaching operating temps within 15 minutes or so. The fuel pump was my first thought. The last time it happened my wife was driving it and was close to home so I went to see what it was and it started up for me. Drove it home where it would not start again. After watching your video I couldn't sit in my recliner thinking about it any longer. I went into the shop where the Jeep started right up so I just started moving the harness around where i found it would die when I moved the harness around where it went over the oil fill tube brace. I pulled the components off the harness and turned it over to find where it had rubbed through and into three wires. I cleaned up the wires and since none were cut all the way I taped them up and recovered them. I braced the harness and got it as far from the engine block as I could. Started right up and has no codes and the speedometer is working again . I have been taking good care of this jeep since I bought it 16 years ago and love going on road trips in it. It was getting to the point I was ready to sell it or maybe upgrade but I feel like I have learned a lesson about Jeep ownership. I'm going to have to keep a better eye on the electrical system. Thanks for the inspiration. You probably saved by several hundred dollars and alot of headache this week.
Thanks for the feedback! The problem plagued me for a while! It would go away and then come back out of nowhere. I made the video in hopes that it would help someone like it did you! And easy fix to a big drivability problem!
Aint ut a bitch when its not just a bad part lol
Very clear diagnosis and description of the solution. Wish all repair videos were this good. Thank you for going to the trouble.
Hey there! I have my Jeep Wrangler, TJ 2000. My Jeep is nice and quiet when in idle, BUT once I drive over 35-40 < on the Highway, I put my foot on the gas pedal and it loses power and then stalls. I changed my oxygen sensors, crank position sensor, cam sensor, and it stalled again today. Do you think you can relate to this? And do you think you solution will solve my issue :(
Also forgot to mention, my computer got codes P0171 & P0174
It is possible but I doubt you have the same issue. It is easy and quick to check the harness and see if anything is frayed. Your error codes indicate a lean condition on cylinders one and two. I would look for an intake manifold leak at the head or a vacuum leak. Get a can of carburetor cleaner and spray it at the intake manifold where It bolts to the Head toward the front of the engine. Do it while the vehicle is idling and if the idle increases you have a leak.
Thanks, my buddy just found his problem. Chafed harness was the culprit.
Happened to mine as well! Thank you for this!
Glad to hear it helped!
I have 2000 Cherokee that has been parked for about 3 years. I been changing sensors and coils until I couldn't find any thing else to change. Nothing fixed the problem. I would be on the highway at 65 mph, and the engine would die and before I could get off the road it would magically start itself up again, most of the time. If it did not restart itself I would put in neutral and turn the key off then back to start. When the RPMs came up I drop it into Drive and keep going. This happened 2-3 times a day. People told me it was this or that, but none of them were right. I'm now going to check my wiring harness!! P.S. I used to have a '64 and a '63 Impala SS!!
I hope it helps you out! Yeah I have had the Impala for a long time and never plan on selling it!
Thanks for your video, saved my life, been trying to figure this out for 3 weeks. Never stalled with me but my daughter every time she drove it to school. Seeing the video kept me from doing something drastic. THANKS
Kudos on your on-point diagnosis! Wire chaffing is a good friend of Mr. Murphy and his all-too-familiar "Murphy's Law".
Hey, you have a natural tallent making videos. You should make more. Thanks for the info. Good job
Thank you!
Wow this is crazy man! I have a 99 Xj sport. Just last week mine did the same thing! I figured it was bad gas. and got screwed putting pricey gas in that thing when it was below a 1/4 tank! Mine needed the downstream O2 sensor changed for a long time. So when i went to autozone, they thought it was a clogged cat, and did the obd2 check. It pulled a P 1694 code for the PCM. I checked my CPS with a multimeter and that tested good. So i didnt have time to test the cat myself, & brought it to mineke. They said no way the cat is clogged, its electricaland didnt charge me! So i cleaned the battery grounds, the one on the firewall, and wiring harness. Took it for a ride a couple hours ago. Still did it, but not as much often. So i went back to autozone, and was gonna buy a TPS and an IAC valve but the lady told me not to and its in the wiring. So that leads me to right here. Its raining now and tomorrow hopefully I’ll solve this headache!! I need a beer! Lol
Update! It was the same issue! Thanks again for this awesome video! You and the girl at autozone saved me many hours and hundreds of dollars in parts! Time to have a few beers and relax now!
I hope this helps!
@@chip63ss99 It did! I had it out earlier and it didnt stall out or run like crap. What color wire was melted on yours? Mine was a brown with an orange stripe down it.
@@bdr5150 not sure. It has been too long but I think it may have been the exact same wire. Glad this helped and you are back up and running. Horrible feeling driving something that you know might leave you stranded at any moment.
I have a 2000 XJ with essentially the same issues. My gauges go dead just the same as yours which is what caught my eye in this video. Bought the jeep brand new off the showroom floor with like 13 miles on it have a little under 250k on it and have replaced pretty much everything at one time or another. Gonna check the harness later today. Thanks for the info.
Glad to help! Hopefully this solves your problem

I just got a new wiring harness a few months ago but I'm going to check to see if it's worn already.thanks for this video
Nice 63
Thank you! Had it over twenty years and will never get rid of it!
That’s rad bro you should do a video on her I’d love to see more of it
Best video on TH-cam! Thank you!
Thank you. I hope it helped someone!
Just went out and checked my 04 I have upgraded with a plastic bridge over the back of the valve cover
Yes. They corrected the issue in later years. 2004-06 I think. I have since purchased an 06 LJ and it has the protective cover over the valve cover. Looks like Mopar figured it out for the later TJ's
Just happened on my 2000! Thank you for posting this!
Great! I am glad to hear that this was able to help. Mine has not missed a beat since repaired!
Just happens to my 2000 XJ as well. Where was it shorted on your vehicle? Ty!
Interesting, I have a 2000 with the same symptoms and have done all the typical mentioned. My gauges go dead just the same as he described. Gonna check the harness when I get home..
Thanks a lot 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
my YJ did this last year. I thought it was bad gas. I made sure I went to the same station thinking it was gas. I just had a new fuel pump put in. no one knew what its problem was. I went for replacing a sensor and thats when I noticed the bare wires. I am the guy who can admit, I do not know what I'm doing, but I found it. that is frustrating in itself. I ended up wrapping tape and pulling it away with an electrical tape "spidey web". going to look into that liquid insulation stuff and attack it again. nice work. nice video.
Poor engineering for sure. I bought my first Jeep, 2005 Wrangler TJ, year and half ago. I didn't realize all the problems and issues that people were having from electrical and front ends. You have to be a hard core enthusiast to put up with it all. I think I'll sell mine and swear off Jeeps for the time being.
Did you dis connect the battery first?
Yes. As a rule of thumb you should always disconnect the battery before working on anything electrical
Hi there, are you interested in selling your jeep?
I am considering selling it for $11,000

@@aaima.t I live in Sacramento California. It is a 2000

Has this fixed your issue still?
Yes it has! It has been over a year now and the problem has never returned
Thank you for this video. I had the same problem and you showed me where to look and the same wire was chafed on the same engine stud and was grounding out. My symptoms was shutting out typically once I took my foot off the pedal once in forward gear and once I put Jeep in reverse. Sometimes I would get a stutter and then stall if I gave it gas. Check this point first before changing idle air control or crank position sensor. I also found a lot of soot on my throttle body because of this problem. Thanks again.
I have exact same problem . Thank you 😃
The same problem keep happening with my 2008 Jeep Wrangler I spend around 4,000$ the problem is still there
so does this video helped u fixed it? Cause Ive the exact problem, and speeded $2000 on it. My mechanic did the exact same thing as in the video, my jeep ran for like a month, didn't stall or anything. But just died on me yesterday, and he suggest me to just scrap it. Since the jeep ran for like a month, pretty sure the problem is with the wiring harness.
nice i hope mine is that simple
Thank you
