Environmental Peacebuilding: The Year in Review and the Year Ahead
On January 22nd, 2025 The Environmental Peacebuilding Association will hosted its annual year-in-review roundtable on “Environmental Peacebuilding: The Year in Review and the Year Ahead.” This roundtable featured insights, experiences, and reflections on important developments in the environmental peacebuilding field in the past year and previewed what is in store for 2024. The discussions will highlighted recent developments, key stories, accomplishments, innovative solutions and projections regarding the field.
The roundtable was moderated by Geoff Dabelko, Professor at Ohio University’s Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service. Panelists include:
Erika Weinthal, President, Environmental Peacebuilding Association and Lee Hill Snowdon Professor of Environmental Policy, Duke University
Jewellord Nem Singh, Global Fellow, Wilson Centre and Incoming Research Fellow, University of Sussex
Bram Ebus, Consultant on Crime, Conflict, and the Environment, International Crisis Group and Co-Director, Amazon Underworld

I need to be part of this school
if one were to ask me, "Don't you believe in the environment or social justice?", I would say No. Mother Nature is beautiful, but amoral, and will kill you as soon as look at you. (As Galadriel said, "All will love me and despair."). I believe rather in the land, in farms, gardens, cultivation, timber, and vineyards, the strong but gentle hand, guiding and creating. As for social justice, I say, let us live in societies of virtue, self-restraint, and opportunity, each according to his gifts and vocation.
I like to be part of this workshop
Fascinating discussion. But it left me wanting more - more details, more context and examples so that the listener really understands his points. His arguments about the problems with linear peacebuilding, for example, have been made by authors like David Chandler and solutions for adaptive peacebuilding proposed by people like Cedric de Coning, arguing for a complexity frame. But it’s all very abstract. We need specific information about what didn’t work and how an adaptive approach in practice could work. We need context and examples in the explanation. Thanks.
