How much computing power does this take? I’ve been able to get maybe 1/3 this many modules before I get crackles and pops. Wifi off, nothing else running, and i have the frame rate dropped some. Depending on the modules i sometimes cant even get half that. I have a mid range HP laptop btw i5.
I'm on an i5 12400 desktop this patch averages 45% CPU and maxes at 65% when running at 44.1k and 236 buffer size to a Focusrite USB interface. Depending on your config, I would try a bigger buffer and/or a lower sample rate to ease the load on the CPU.

No problem, his is a software emulation of a Modular Synthesizer. Look up Modular Synths or Eurorack for the hardware equivalent.

How much did you need to twiddle knobs for this to come out? I imagine there was some control of the filters and envelopes, maybe some volume or faders, but was the rest sorta running on its own? In order to get evolution do you find it sufficient to change settings on knobs or do you need a second pattern section to cut to midway through the track? Thank you! This is incredibly inspiring!
Thats right. Although in this case, I'm only tweaking filters and volume - not envelopes. If you look at the top right thee are 6 grey knobs. These are all the live elements in this recording.

Yeah, Omri Cohen on TH-cam is a good place to start. He has quite a few beginner friendly videos and, I think, does a good job of explaining what he's doing and why.

Mostly, yes. The notes that are played are random (but quantised). If the chords play on a given beat is controlled by me.

Thank you! This is VCV Rack. If you're not familiar - VCV Rack is free modular synth software with some paid modules (but majority are free). In this track, the sound sources are Synthesis Technologies' E340 Cloud Generator & Morphing Terrarium (not free) and the Surge Sine & Wavetable oscillators (free, official ports of the excellent Surge soft synth). The free version of VCV Rack runs standalone but the paid version allows you to use it as a VST inside another DAW or run VSTs inside it.
