Pollution of lakes and water bodies pose a serious threat to fresh water resources. The major polluter is agriculture wherein large quantities of fertilizers and agro-chemicals wash down to the nearest water body. Excessive nutrients fuel the growth of blue green (BG) algae that proliferate and are not consumed by marine animals. As BG algae develops, it removes dissolved oxygen from the water,...

    Water is so needed; we fear any suggestion that we may be denied access to it. This may be a reason we deny the suggestion itself. The assumption is, clean water, cheap water, hot water, plentiful water, water anytime and all the time. That is only 6 assumptions about water, there are more. Incidentally, everyone feels entitled to water, I say everyone is. But does everyone have access to the assumed access to water ?

    The focus on reducing phosphorus in a system is a questionable solution to reduce cyanobacterial growth for two reasons. First, it is important to understand that only reactive/soluble forms of nitrogen and phosphorus are available for algae/cyanobacteria growth. Sediments typically contain insoluble forms of phosphorus, including most phosphate compounds). Insoluble phosphate can't be used by cyanobacteria to grow. Conversely, most forms of nitrogen (ammonium and nitrate compounds) are soluble and thus available for cyanobacteria growth. Second, the Redfield molar ratio for algae and other photosynthetic organisms tells us that these organisms require 106 mols of carbon, 16 mols nitrogen, and 1 mol phosphorus per empirical mol of cyanobacteria. This means that cyanobacteria require MUCH LESS phosphorus to grow than nitrogen. Consequently, the levels of useable forms of phosphorus must be reduced to much lower levels than the useable forms of nitrogen to limit cyanobacteria growth. Since we only need to limit one of the nutrients to limit cyanobacteria growth, we should FOCUS on REDUCING soluble nitrogen, NOT total phosphorus.

People from blue states and low water really should drink gatorade in place of water, it will make them stronger when the AIDS from the shots hit them...if they don't just die from it like that Dr. is saying.

    If Meta data & Micro Data can control / influence peoples minds & actions, surely the same can control / improve water use/waste actions. The instantly useable clean, hot, cold, pure, treated , retreated water is taken for granted. Taken for granted to such a point that, when a poll was done about a decade ago in NY NY, the #1 response to "What is the most important thing in your life ", was "Hi speed internet". # 7, was a "flushing toilet". I will tell you that after decades of being a Plumber that the minute water is gone, water becomes #1 instantly. When when the plumber restores water, the high speed internet returns to the #1 position. I suggest this defines, "Taken for granted". High speed data can not make it rain, (Rain is where all water comes from)*, but it can show the consumers the actual use/waste they create. I try to think that people are mostly smart, good etc. But my opinion about people is, they need to be aware beyond denial of the reality that surrounds their bubble. For this reason I think it's time for "tough love" and a way to do this is to micro monitor the water use/waste they create. Water monitoring can do this. In a way, people are exposed while in public, so they behave accordingly. But privacy in our water use/waste behavior allows for, well let me say, to be on less than best practice behavior. If a monitor were to be alerting them of their waste/use habits, it may be like the way the public view effects what they do in public. As the world becomes fuller/smaller, our footprints are becoming more important. To this issue I suggest the waste of one will effect others so much to the point that we are needing to walk without so much swagger, and freedom, and more with respect and discipline. So to help us, we need a little voice on out shoulder tweeting messages about our water use/waste. Macro/Micro data can do this. To read more about Mike & Mac in a metaphoric short book I wrote you can find it on this site. "All about Water as told by the Plumber" BTW, we are working to get any monies from book sales to be used to support this site and cause. Thank you for being part of the "fuller/smaller" world of water, and learning about beyond high speed internet. Let's make water clean again. Greg

    Thank you for reply and validation of my concerns. The IAPMO and the orgs. involved have useable solutions to the problems we face. My mantra is, we do not have a water problem, we have a people problem.....I am involved in groups that have useable solutions to many specific water problems most of the answers are not strictly commercial but a blend of product and behavioral. The opposition to "big government" is at a glance, noble, but closer look it is greed based. Ethics are an issue, and like beauty, they seem to be in the check book of the observer. Please let me know of events that need attendance and improvement.

  • @gregchick21
    @gregchick21 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have observed the different water interests, (silos), skew or tweak the solutions to water problems for self interest. Solutions that otherwise would be more successful. Changes are resisted due to the impact or feared impact on the status quo. The term, "don't rock the boat" comes to mind here. My fear is if we use up the lake, there will be no boat to rock. I ask, who or what represents water, for the sake of water, with out a special interest? Example, a water district in the west cares not about the water in the east. Others only care about surface water, or ground water etc....

    • @GlobalWaterWorksORG
      @GlobalWaterWorksORG 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your points are good, Greg, and suggest an increased awareness of the value of water along with the need for integrated water resource management. The EPA, Alliance for Water Efficiency and Alliance for Water Stewardship are a few of the organizations we see looking after the holistic management of water. Each has created libraries of education and communications materials to educate retail and commercial users on water stewardship. We share your fear that the siloed nature of our water interests will dilute their effectiveness, and welcome your input to fulfill our mission that global water works for all future generations. Thanks for voicing your very legitimate concerns.
