This is important for people to realise that if they are being influenced by people who are holding them back in life, then its not a good thing. It's not about being nasty or cold, just that as you get older your goals / ambitions change, while old friends are still happy to go to the pub twice a week and don't care about improving their own lives, so it can spread to you too if you hang around with them. Btw I love that you say "feckin'" lol, me and my dad big fans of father Ted since the 90s (when I was like 12), and we incorporated feck / feckin into our language even though we are not Irish 🤣

These questions will help frame how you want to live today and make you question how you want to spend your money now and perhaps be more considerate with your spending to achieve the life you want without guilt. Designer goods are a rip off but when you can afford them it's not wrong to want better quality clothes that will last a long time. In the US, you will be persecuted and scapegoated if you are a minimalist and not consuming materialism and media. Sometimes you will be looked down upon and will be difficult to make friends and be respected by people. That is one downside of being a minimalist and not consuming things. Family will soon look down upon you for being cheap. Hence, why in the US it is difficult to be a minimalist.

Quite possibly the most offensive title I've come across. Poor? Being minimalist doesn't mean being poor, neither does meditating or being less materialistic. Poor is not some sort of lifestyle choice. Being poor means not being able to afford to heat your home, to feed your kids. That's what being poor is. Poor as a look? I'm sorry, this is a horribly offensive video.

Your first tip is well meaning but you should add the caveat that this apparently comes with the privilege of living close to central. Most people who live and work in London do not live in Zone 1 where offices and events are. It's not possible to walk everywhere when your job is 40 mins to an hr tube ride away from your home. PS my old financial company said they were going to have a clothes swop in the basement but it got cancelled. Wondering if it was the same one . As a fellow London dweller great tips...

  • @plainjanespath

London is particularly good for free museums and galleries. Toronto is not as good at that overall, but pretty much all of them have one day a week or a month that is free. Also the library has a certain number of free passes (especially for some of the less popular museums, which is great, because it gets you off the beaten path to learn things you might not have otherwise). I'm surprised at the difference in cost between the bus and the tube. In Toronto it is a flat fee regardless of the distance taken or the mode (get as far as you can within 2 hours, including round trips for one fee). A good thing for us to remember for next time we visit.

I think one of the most interesting pieces of the study that few ppl talk about is that the kids who were able to delay gratification were ones who had reason to trust the experimenter. If kids had learned that adults don't keep their word - aka they won't get that 2nd marshmallow - then they (very logically) ate the marshmallow right away. So as adults, looking back at our money scripts to see where we are falling into learned helplessness or thinking there isn't any point in delaying gratification because of past experiences, and addressing those actively.

Thanks for this, this was very well worded. I've arrived at a point where I'm financially 'well' and don't need to work and this is message is EXACTLY what I've been processing for the last year. I have a friend that would offer financial and health advice at times, some of it which was pretty good! But a few years ago I stopped listening to his advice when I looked at his situation realizing that I was taking financial and health advice from a man that was living in his brothers basement, living month to month and was extremely overweight and had developed a fair number of health issues. I felt that he was projecting his ideals but didn't ever listen to his own advice. My financial wellbeing and overall health has dramatically improved since. But it's unfortunate because I've now 'arrived' at a point in my life where none of my friends are here with me and I find it to be rather lonely. So now I'm searching for people that are in a similar position in life. It's daunting.

Great content today. Everyone needs to put at least one hour a week of their time into their finances. There are many resources to learn how to invest today, people need to take advantage of them. Investing is not gambling, not a sprint either, but a marathon. The earlier that you start investing the better your results will be.

my parents started off their working lives in the mid 60s. once I realized what the sequence of return looked like for their formative years, it made sense that they didn't believe in investing in the markets (they have some investments now, but they have stayed very conservative from my understanding). they also paid off their mortgage early. in the 80s that made perfect sense. but to take their advice to do the same thing over the past two decades would not have been optimal. (I did it anyways) otoh, my dad always focused on the importance of transferable skills and strong networks, not being more loyal to an employer than they are to you - that has stayed relevant.
