AFTER THE END (1974)
Anyone got time to see a movie I made 50 years ago? This little movie of mine is 4 and a half minutes long and I know how you scroll demons are... 4 and ½ minutes is a long time spent looking at one thing, but this is a movie about a person watching a 16mm film that didn’t hang around to see if there was anything else to view on the film after the “End” title came on. Admittedly, most modern audiences don’t see the countdown numbers printed on the start of the film or other information both at the beginning or the end of it. You might remember when you were in grade school and the teacher rolled in the cart with the projector on top to play the class an instructional movie, you probably saw some of film start and end leaders that had all sort of information printed on it flashing by quickly when projected. This is what my little movie is about- an insane number of odd things printed on the end of the film that might have been worth seeing but was missed by the person who didn’t stay until the last bit of film made its way through the film gate to the take-up reel. Welp, that’s the storyline I’m trying to sell here. If you’re willing to buy it, you might like it!

Underground art film shot on Marlboro commercial set (1958)
มุมมอง 1615 หลายเดือนก่อน
I’m a 16mm film collector and have been one for decades. One of the things I collect are old TV commercials, especially ones that played on TV in the 1950’s and ‘60’s. One particular commercial I got in really grabbed my attention. It appears to be an underground art film shot on a Marlboro commercial set. My guess this was done in the nighttime- when the regular staff had gone home- by some of...
The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. Cliff Edwards Soundie (1943)

Cliff Edwards is in fine form in this film although he only sings and speaks a few lines in this production, as most of the running time is used to spotlight singer and dancer Marion Colby. So much so, that she receives top billing over Cliff Edwards' name! I find this unusual because Colby only had a couple of uncredited roles to her name prior to appearing in this musical jukebox short. Mario...

This has got to be the silliest, most sophomoric parody of Dr. Fredric Wertham's book "Seduction of the Innocent" that's every been made. I made this film in 1972 when I was 18, but instead of finding fault with it right and left, you can take note that the film's a testament to the typical teen comic book collector of the 60's and 70's in that we all had comic book fever on the brain 24/7 - at...

Not sure if you saw my last week's message re UCLA (YT can be wonky with messages). Repeating message below on a different video posting now: Through an LOC connection I have, I managed to get UCLA Film Archives to pull their version of F&F for a footage count. According to the LOC, the abridged version is 560ft, or about 15 minutes.. We’ll see what UCLA reports as their footage “in the next several weeks”. Hopefully, it’s a lot more, in which case I think I might be able to purchase a copy (but that is certainly not definite yet). I’ll keep you posted.

@@barrysiegel131 Finally got a reply back from UCLA. F&F is in a “compromised condition”, with a 1.35% shrinkage. The shrinkage prevented an accurate measurement, but a rough estimate puts the footage at 650ft, which is 90ft more than the abridged 560ft, or about 2 to 2.5 minutes longer. The film has now gone to UCLA’s Preservation department for an “appraisal” of the film’s compromised condition. Hopefully, it can be digitally transferred, let’s see what they say. I will keep you informed as it develops.

Not sure if you saw my reply (below) which I left at "High Sea Blues", so I'm repeating it here: I have some disappointing news. I’ve just received the Library’s FAST AND FURIOUS and it looks like it is no better than what is already out there, in terms of new material. That is, it starts with Lige in the window, already holding up the sign, then it abruptly changes to another scene, etc. It lacks the lead-up that you described. I haven’t gone and compared scene-for-scene yet, but I am not hopeful about obtaining any “new” material. It would appear that an abridged 16mm version of the film was redistributed at some point and this is it. The full version is apparently a very rare item. I checked and the BFI does not have it. Sorry I couldn’t find it.

I thought I had already replied, but maybe I never clicked on the reply button. When the owner of the Silent Movie Theater in Los Angeles retired, he sold the collection (all 16mm) to David Packard (of Hewlett-Packard fame). When he died, his widow donated the collection to the UCLA Film Archives, so they should have the print. Maybe you have access to their archives- I don't know, but thanks for all the research you did. I enjoy looking at all the movies you post. -Barry

This commercial was burned into my memory as a 5-year-old kid. It gave me an impression of Seattle that stuck with me throughout my young life, and so when I had the opportunity to be stationed up there in the 1980s while I was in the Navy, I jumped on it -- and I wasn't disappointed. I took my family up the Space Needle back then and it was indeed a wonder; and the views were spectacular on the day we picked to go. The memory of this commercial immediately came to the fore and has stuck with me since. Still live in WA, and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Now, if only the residents of Seattle would clean up the mess they created by voting in a bunch of Bolsheviks to sit on the City Council. This is nothing like the Seattle I remember from the 60s and the 80s.

Doing a bit of research I found that the first space stations were in 1965, so that's why I listed the film as 1965, however, I agree that the kids don't look like they're from the mid-60's, more like the late 50's as you suggest. I guess one way that you know for sure the age of the film is how General Mills has their logo design on the cereal box. Do I have this right?
