Here is an informal walk through of our gothic arch wood greenhouse, for your enjoyment. I made the greenhouse. I used plans from Virginia poly technical institute, yellow and red cedar, fir, double walled polycarbonate covering, designed 1962, modified by me. Plans are here-th-cam.com/video/T0125_C4DXc/w-d-xo.html&feature=plcp&context=C49c7210VDvjVQa1PpcFNDNuCmob12Vu_E20X_XbIsMkpb1aG075E=

    Was there any indication of the use of an adhesive in the construction of the arches. Is this the set of plans from Virginia University?

      You don’t use treated wood for greenhouses because of poisons in the Wood contaminating the soil

    I would just like more height, otherwise great dimensions. Height may be better with snow too, more pitch.

    It really shows that you did not build this greenhouse, " I dont know what 1/2 x 2 spacer means" it's not a spacer its support strips to make the structure ridged. You really are taking credit for someone else building the greenhouse in your prior video.

    5:51 i know this years late but wat they mean by 1/2 inch x 2inch on each side of spacer blocks is the construction of the ribs if u look at the other side of the diagram it tells u about the spacer blocks being 2 x 4 x6 1 strip on each side creating the rib or truss

  • @dustystahn3855

    Here is a simpler method. Think of a Gothic Arch as an A Frame building with curved rafters. Draw a line the length of the rafter on a floor or big enough work table and mark the center. Drive a nail at each end of the line. Place a batten against the nails and from the center push out the batten until you reach the desired curve. draw the curve on the inside of the batten and you have the inside of the arch. It is so simple any one can do it. Securely fasten blocks about two feet apart along the line and you have a building jig. The block spacing varies with the size of the arch. This method works for any arch from windows, doors to buildings. I have even used it to build boats. If you want a different curve, push the batten out at different points. It is fun to see how many shapes you can make.

    nice but that looks like it will accommodate an incredible snow load which cant be so important considering the poly cover will be several times the weaker link?

  • @TheGbab
    @TheGbab 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not criticizing, but there is an easier way to layout big curved shapes. It's called "lofting" as in boat building. For a roof, just use a long flexible "batten" like 1/4 x 1 inch wood. Bend it to the desired curve and hold it "edge on" to the floor with a few nails. Some nails on one side, some on the other. Draw a line on the floor and build a jig from there.

    It is important to note that these plans were drawn when lumber was designated by actual dimensions 2x4s were 2 inches by 4 inches. Today lumber is designated by nominal dimensions, therefore the 2x4x6 blocks have to be made from larger lumber.

    • @donhammer186
      @donhammer186 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ricardo it only becomes an issue when determining wall thickness in this application. Current uniformity of dimensional (nominal)lumber is set in order to simplify multiple aspects of construction. And before you reply understand that I have been a builder for 25 years.

    Featuring this Gothic Arch Wooden Greenhouse are really worth inspiring. You've got a very nice selection of flowers and the structural designs are very well constructed and the plants are merely organized. It's really nice to know some important information about this beneficial outdoor structure. Thank you!

    The end pieces are separate panels. publication is no 461 reprinted 1980 PLASTIC GREENHOUSES You can ask boat builders about other suitable wood I think the panels are 18 6" A user writes>>My local Extension office had a copy of publication 487, a smaller version of the gothic greenhouse, and then upon further inspection, she found 461.

    I'm sure this one could take that velocity of wind, and they said the structures have withstood 70mph. However in the original design, forces on the end walls would tend to make the ribs lie down. This one is greatly strengthened by the office building and struts on the end wall to the ridge. If the door was to open in a storm, then the panels might be forced free from pressure pushing from the inside out.

  • @onionofdeath
    @onionofdeath 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you know how well the structure tolerates wind loads of about 60-70 MPH?

  • @loveiswithus

    @darthom She still tells me thank you and how much she loves it, all the time. It really amazes me what it has meant to her. I think the dimensions are 22x44 feet. The arches are 4ft on center and the office is 10x12 GL

  • @loveiswithus

    @loveiswithus try heating with compost, just make some large compost boxes and fill them before winter so they get started, the temp inside a compost pile can reach very high temperatures that can provide just enough to keep your tropical plants safe. I am looking threw the post trying to find if you said where one gets plans for this green house but if you mention it here again that would be cool. thanks

  • @loveiswithus
    @loveiswithus 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @loveiswithus We put a lot of water into the greenhouse, even to mist for summer cooling. But mostly the structure remains dry. We try to keep things dried out in winter, and almost always run fans to fight molds. We run a heater in winter periodically to keep things as dry as possible. I don't think this house will rot from the inside as many people suppose it might.
