The 19 Most Pristine Quads in Womens Figure Skating: 22/23 Season
This is a data-driven ranking of the most pristine quads in womens figure skating for the 22/23 season.
Whereas most of the videos on this channel are focused on determining the “best” jumps or jumpers, the focus here is on determining the “most pristine” jumps. Why is this and what’s the difference?
Ranking the best quads would necessitate using a methodology similar to the one used for our “top quad jumpers” videos, which factors in not only jump quality, but also jump difficulty. While this approach is perfectly sensible, the results here would be a somewhat repetitive video packed almost entirely with 4Lzs and 4Fs. As such, it was decided it would be more interesting to momentarily ignore difficulty, and instead focus on the most flawlessly executed quads, regardless of quad type and difficulty.
With this in mind, the basis for this ranking is PoM (“Percentage of Max”), a metric calculated by dividing the number of points a skater received for a jump by the maximum number of points they could have received.
One advantage of PoM is that it factors in not only GOE, but also the base value impact of any calls that a jump received. While not relevant to this particular analysis, PoM also makes it easier to compare jumps across different seasons and scale of values.
Some further explanation of PoM...
• To use a 4F to illustrate, for the 22/23 season, the maximum score for a 4F, ignoring bonuses, was 11.00. So, as a hypothetical example, a 4F with a score of 9.00 would have a PoM of 9.00 / 11.00 = 81.8%.
• When calculating PoM for a quad jumped as part of a combination or sequence, the base value impact of the non-quad part of the jump pass is excluded from both the numerator and denominator. (It wouldn’t be excluded if you were calculating PoM for the entire jump pass, however.) For example, for a 4Lz+2T, the 1.30 point impact of the 2T would be excluded. Also, it is a rare occurrence, but if a jump pass’s GOE was based on the non-quad part of the jump pass, it would be recalculated to be based on the quad.
• Second-half bonuses are factored into the calculation of PoM. However, other bonuses, such as those sometimes seen in certain novice and domestic competitions, are generally excluded. Repetition penalties and fall deductions are also excluded from the calculation of PoM.
The analysis underlying this ranking takes into account all competitions covered by SkatingScores, the invaluable and fairly comprehensive database of international and domestic competition results. However, SkatingScores is missing some significant Russian domestic events, especially at the novice level. In light of this, the following events have also been included in this analysis...
All-Russian Competitions taking place in Moscow and St. Petersburg
Russian Novice Nationals
Moscow Novice Championships
St. Petersburg Championships
Winter Spartakiad, Prizes of Santa Claus
Moscow Open Championships, City Championships, Cup, Sports Cup
It is estimated that this analysis, in total, has taken into account over 95% of the ultra-cs that have been attempted in competition this season, with those attempts missing mainly being from minor domestic events in Russia, in particular minor events outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as some minor domestic events in Japan and the United States.
Lastly, it should be noted that in the case of any skater who tested positive for performance enhancing drugs, their results are invalidated for purposes of this analysis starting from the season they tested positive, and ending at the point that they were cleared to compete again by the relevant international bodies.
Thanks for reading this and watching! Don’t miss the companion video to this one, which counts down the best quad jumpers of the 22/23 season, as well as videos counting down the season’s best jumps and jumpers for each quad type and for triple axels.

Old school wise: Midori Ito takes the cake, for modern skaters: Aliona Kostornaia, but Midori’s is still the best
Anna At 2 place!! ❤ but even thou i like anna i think Trusova or Valieva deserved 2nd place
Lovely
I think the thing that puts sasha's quads above these is her doing it with both hands over her head; really makes it look that much better
Rippons are best in moderation, and I'm glad that Sasha would mix it up. But some skaters really overuse them.
FALTAN LA MAYORIA DE PATINADORAS RUSAS TRUSSOVA, KOSTORNAIA, Y SOBRE TODO VALIEVA Y SOBRAN NORTEAMERICANAS MEDIOCRES
Midori n Tonya were the best !!
Why is a 12 year old Novice competing quads at this rate lmao
The answer is pretty simple: competition. It sounds crazy, but there are so many talented Russian girls, including in the 11-13 age range, that a skater like Margarita literally needs a multi-quad program to win events.
I shouldn't be surprised by how much Margot was on this list but I was nonetheless.
Girl is a machine. I'm curious what her numbers will look like by the end of this season.
Now I realized that Mia Kalin was the first ever woman to land quad on our czech ice! That’s so cool and I’m proud of her!
Thirteen junior Russian Skaters showed their supremacy in quads jumps , all with top clean landings, very good heights. Glory to Russia for its excellency in artistry, accuracy and beauty of its skaters. Now that Korea has good skaters, ISU should give them the opportunity to compete against excellent Russian and Chinese young skaters who were not given the chance to compete because of ridiculous politics.
hoping for the return of Nika’s quad lutz this season!! Elena’s triple lutz is so big i could see it turning into a quad one day as well!!
Yes please on both!
Samodelkina is super underrated.
But Veronika's is technically the best.
Veronika's quads are the best technically. At least imo.
However nika’s landings are VERY often shaky, leaving a bad impression on the judges giving it less GOE than it could be. This is unlike a skater like Valieva who’s landings flow and position is very nice even despite the takeoff technique.
Midori's joy at landing 3A at the Olympics is cute.
Samodelkina is super underrated imo.
All Junior skaters save Sasha. I think she should get extra credit for skating as a Senior.
Samo is a senior now. 😊
I knew Trusova’s 4F from 2022 Euros was gonna be on this list and it’s infuriating, it had an outside edge and thus should’ve received negative GOE.
I'd say unclear edge, not outside edge, but either way, you'll have to take it up with the tech panel, as these lists are based on actual scores, not my personal opinions. (And, scoring aside, it's still a fantastic jump if you're able to get over the edge.)
@@fs.delight I know this is based on legit scores, in fact, I wouldn't mind at all if it was a personal opinion, because the jump does look pretty as you say. What angers me is that you have these experts, who are paid to assess these jumps and this poorly executed Flip ends up being the highest scoring jump in women's figure skating history. That's just not right. Sorry if it seemed I was angry with you, I know this is just a compilation.
I totally understand. On one hand, you'd hope that in one of the most important competitions in this Olympic cycle, at which you presumably have some of the best tech panelists in the sport, you'd see calls like this made. On the other hand, you look at how many skaters, on mere triples, show the same edge issues, who don't get calls, and you can understand why Sasha isn't treated any differently. (It's just that this jump gets more attention because of the huge score, of course.) I'm optimistic, though. I think it's just a matter of time before we see computer vision aiding or replacing tech panels, which will result in the sport being called much more rigorously and consistently. And, like I said, for me personally, there are so many other great things about this jump, that I'm at peace with it being ranked so high. (Although, again, as you noted, these rankings aren't at all my own opinion.)
Thanks for this, very informative .
Thanks! Glad to hear.
Sasha and Anya are queens! Definitely!
Surprised there wasn't an honorable mention for Tonya's 3A at the 91 Worlds. Lots of speed going into the jump, and a much more controlled landing than at 91 SA.
Good point. I can't remember why I didn't include it, to be honest.
Kami’s axis on some of her jumps scare me but her quad toes can be beautiful
Sasha always came across most solid on the quads.
YES AND THERE YOU HAVE IT, THE SILVER AND GOLD MEDALIST OF THE OLYMPICS
Liza😍
Midori and Tonya's 3A's are FREAKING HUGE. Amazing.
Aliona Kostornaia is no slouch though.
Sasha's actually LOOK the best.
Kamila's situation is addressed in the video description.
It kinda suprised me to see so many non russians on this top but it's a good thing to see other countries are trying to catch russian dominance
Yeah, Japan seems to have made a push to have more of its top young skaters learn 3As. However, it seems like this push might have stalled a bit more recently; I worry that the lack of competition from Russians has led to them being a little complacent. In any case, Hanna Yoshida in particular has one of my favorite 3As right now, and I hope we see a lot of it this season. 😊
Excellent video! Aliona's 3A wonderful as always. Just curious: what's Wakaba's # of attemps and PoM? I somehow expected her to end up on this list
Thanks so much! Good question on Wakaba. She's had 16 attempts with a PoM of 54.7%. So she fell right under the cutoff, and would have placed near the bottom even if she hadn't. But maybe that will change this season with her return to competition? I hope I have reason to include her next time around. 🙏🏼
Liza’s 3A itself is one of the worst of everyone in this video despite her consistency, I know everyone praises her but her axel pattern is too curved. If she jumped in a straight direction like Akatieva, her 3A would certainly be underrotated.
Sofia Akatieva’s 3A is honeslty so good
Some of the Russian skaters were a little overscored in my opinion
Liza might go down as the most durable 3A jumper ever! Even at the age of 26, still rocking them (almost) every time she’s on the ice🤘The Empress
Yeah, I think there are few things more valuable then womens discipline than having a consistent 3A that stays with you into adulthood. I'm pretty sure Liza herself has more or less said that she'd be toast without her 3A.
Where is Kamilla?
Kamila never did 4Lz or 4F.
Kamila's situation is addressed in the video description.
Sasha's 4 Lutz is by far one of the best 4Lutzs ever landed in both women and men catagory , she is such a furious girl , i admire her a lot even thou i perfer artistic skaters with great skating skills , and she is not the types of girls i usually get interested to , but somehow she always attracts me with her bravery, i hope to see more of her , i really want her in next olympic love Anna and Veronika too
FS feels like a sport with the open ended scoring than the old one which felt like a popularity contest than an actual sport. Skaters are finally given the a credit where it's due. It's a damn shame Midori and Tonya didn't get the marks they rightfully deserved by landing the 3A.
Totally agree. I wish Midori and Tony had gotten the chance to compete in this era, or at least under these rules.
Sofia samodelkina on top
Yujae, she is the woman who landed the world's youngest triple axel.
Yep! And now her twin sister, Yuseong, has landed a 3A in international competition, too. 💪🏼💪🏼
