Thank you for this video. I have to take minutes at my new workplace. I absolutely have no idea or experience in the construction side of a gas company. I definitely have to speak up when a person doesn't stay on the agenda. This happens everytime with the same person. I don't want to be rude, but I am trying my best and this person is not helping my situation.

We made great experiences linking notes directly to meeting recordings using tools like tldv.io or Vowle - especially helped to eliminate the difficulty with "lack of understanding" since the whole record is available

27 March: Very helpful .....and I'm taking the minutes! Being aware of the Chair's role is really helpful to me as I learn the craft of minute taking. Thanks so much for your brilliant videos ! UPDATE (28 March): Last night I had my first experience of taking minutes. In the week leading up to the 'event' I was worried and nervous. My anxiety levels built up to a crescendo two days before the meeting. In desperation I went online and that's when I discovered your videos. I watched two of them twice (this one and the minute-taking one). After absorbing everything that you explained a change in me occurred .......almost miraculously my anxiety levels plummeted, and I drove off to the meeting thinking, "With all I know now this should be a piece of cake." AND IT WAS !! You're a lifesaver Alison! Huge "I nailed it" grin. :-) (heartfelt thanks from Ron in Perth, Australia)

*When I was taking minutes of the meeting, before the actual meeting, I asked my Doctor (I work in a hospital's laboratory) to clip on his polo pocket my flashdrive-sized audio/voice recorder. With that, I can review the actual meeting.* *_If you have a GoPro, you can even video record the actual meeting while being discreet. I did this during a big (auditorium size) lecture/orientation. But if it's in a smaller meeting set-up, it's best to actually ask for permission._*

You could but without notes you wouldn't have the important points and tasks clarified... and they wont get addressed. Going back to listen to the meeting again and again to find the point or action would be a waste of time

This is an excellently prepared talk. Every committee person or voluntary secretary should see it. The promised guide 'Secrets of successful minute and note taking' remains a secret, but there is a transcript under '. . . More'. The transcript is hilarious, as are many of Dragon Naturally Speaking's interpretations. My favourites: …your gender is your fundamental guiding tool (agenda) …be really really careful what you right (write) …write much much faster, much more allegedly (legibly) …if you’re going to use a ballpoint make sure it’s like white (lightweight) …if you’re thrown into it with just an hour to despair (spare) …when you’re actually having a break, that’s the time to tidy up your nose (notes) …you’re not going to be able to write for beta minutes (verbatim) Thank you, Allison, for facts and FUN.
