Roles of Matter - for soprano sax & effect pedals
Roles of Matter is a work for soprano saxophone and effect pedals written for Luke Kranyak.
As living entities, we take up space. We often have opportunities to be the center of attention, taking up the entire space with nothing but ourselves. Other times, we play a role in a larger operation, and that larger picture is what captures everyone’s attention rather than the individuals within the group. This work explores both scenarios, with the saxophonist acting both as a unit within a larger picture, and an individual taking up as much space as possible.

😂 good job
this piece is horrifying. excellent
Y'know its bad when the sheet music starts looking like what my doctor prescribed me
Don't listen to the negative comments. Music can take many different forms-- given the story in the description (I'm sorry for what happened to your extended family by the way) and the overall tone of the piece, it's clearly meant to be evocative and unsettling, and it excels tremendously in those regards. It takes a lot of courage to pour your heart out and make something unique, it's commendable that you were not only able to do that, but do it well, too
Listening to this made me feel like something was about to give me the stabby stabby special
i love how in 12 the chord sounds blissful, almost like they try and bond but it doesn't happen, same with 24
2 years of experience, how do i play the part with the squiqly lines? i have experience with many different types of music but ive never see this before
funky
Reject modernity. Embrace tradition
Awesome work
cool to stretch what the saxophones can do, but musically, this "modern" saxophone "music" is definetely not my taste idk if its rly music or just squeaks and microtones
beautiful and invigorating piece. jaw dropping. please never stop composing
Can anyone give me some tips on slap tongue techniques? I’m trying to learn it but I just can’t do it. I’m playing tenor and bari.
I love it! 🩵
Love the spectral approach to saxophone
This is beautiful.
Such A Refreshing MasterPiece! Bravo Maestro. Cheers From México City!!!
Congratulations on the collaboration! I hope that you get lots of interest from saxophone players, especially after the crazy sax quartet you put out a few months ago. I am excited to see what you come up with
🎉🎉🎉
My best friend just performed this as part of her quartet recital and I was blown away. The soprano and baritone both moved to the back of the lecture hall towards the end and this piece becomes all the more eerie when saxes are coming at you from four different directions. Incredible piece.
Thank you so much! So glad you got to hear it live. I tuned into the stream and they absolutely nailed it.
Listen to reconstruction on baritone saxaphone also the lines above some of the notes I believe mean teeth on reed and the higher it goes it needs more strength and lower is less
I have seen these types of quartets and solos but I have no idea what the actual name for this style of composure is called.
This is the saxophone quartet arrangement of getting murdered
I’ve never heard a piece like this or that uses contemporary techniques mixed with traditional techniques in quite this way. I typically don’t like contemporary music, but this evokes such visceral emotions of loneliness and pain and I’ve never had a piece do that to me before. Remarkable stuff! Thank you for sharing it!
yo this is what I be feeling in the Minecraft caves
WHAT A AMAZING WORK OF ART. WOW.
amazing composition! very interesting
My quartet bought the score back when it came out 2 months ago and we are having a great time putting it together for our final quartet recital in about a month! Thank you so much for writing this amazing piece we love it!! Sincerely, The Magnolia Quartet🌸
I'm so happy to hear this! I'd love to know more about your performance. Feel free to use the contact page on my website. Thank you, Magnolia Quartet! 🌸💐🌺
Congrats on your performance tonight!
This is exactly how I feel rn
This is shit I love it
Exceptional, thank you.
As a sax player this hurts my soul. I love it but what the everloving fuck
I feel like I Get It but all i can say to that is This Sucks lol(in the most emotionally impactful way ever)(such amazing art thank you) (editing bc im sleepy, I want it to be clear that this frickin rules)
i'm always thinking about this piece
Wow, this piece is so evocative and the visuals are subtle yet effective- I thought the phasing in and out of overlapping footage and the change of lighting with the tonal shift towards the end were just perfect. Also, based on the few compositions of yours that I have seen, you seem like extended technique royalty and you have really good control of the different timbres that you find. Kudos to both you and Joshua!
Thank you for your kind words! Much of the visual techniques are inspired by the original film this was written for (which is much more intense than this performance video).
What a fantastic piece 🩵
Measure 65 is scaring me
I enjoy it , thank you
Planning to perform this for an ensemble festival with my quartet 🙏
So happy to hear that! I’d love to hear more about the performance. If and when you get program info feel free to contact me with the details through my website. ☺️

Average day in the life of a saxophonist 🥰
I FHCKI MY LOVE BARI RXTENDED TECHNIQUE
