Screwtape Letters 19 Exploiting Love, a Christian writer, on the Demonic Realm
In this video by Will Goldstein, based on the writings of C.S. Lewis, Screwtape introduces the idea that humans are naturally in competition with one another, but God wants them to be free of this, and to have a continued existence, meaning immortality. The demons are scratching their heads in bewilderment over this, because they cannot possibly conceive of what God is going to get out of this. There must be some secret motive God has, and as humans are distinct from one another, the demons have gone to great lengths over time to try and figure out what love is.
Satan himself was very disturbed by the whole idea, and quarreled with God over we humans. He demanded, "What could we possibly make out of them"? When the idea of the cross came up, well this was too much and Satan could not accept this, so out of disgust, he stormed out of the Presence, meaning God. The secret idea of the cross filled Satan with anxiety and contempt. He thought. "It doesn't make any sense. What is He, meaning God, really up to?"
The demons, with all their efforts over the centuries, have failed to understand the meaning of love. So now their only purpose left for them is to exploit it. The job for the demons is to keep our state of mind in all circumstances to move toward them. Whether love is good or bad is irrelevant to them, for both can be exploited.
For the arrogant man with a tainted view of spirituality, a contempt for the body, and with a view of sex as being impure, it is best to lead him into asceticism. For the emotional gullible man, fill him with the minor poets, and feed him romantic and erotic tragedies with adultery, murders and suicides. For the Christian man, there must be some fallen women in the neighborhood, prostitutes perhaps, or women online that he can be led astray to even marry one of them. To the demons, falling in love is neither good nor bad, but simply something to be exploited.

I've noticed in my own mind that I often see things ahead of time that I'll be doing. They appear to be at the time somewhat worse than what ends up occurring. I suspect our minds are more often the "devil" Lewis is writing about. Also, in my own thinking I've found it extremely fascinating the way the Divine protects us (or doesn't) depending on our faith. I've also always found C S Lewis to be somewhat dogmatic in his thinking, which was rather odd considering his extensive education and intelligence. I'll have to read 'Screwtape' again to see exactly what's going on.

We are all subject to demonic impressions, Christians at least have the benefit of the presence of the Holy Spirit and angelic assistance to guide us in discernment. Lewis is merely pointing out that we all have to battle evil in this world, but with the presence of The Holy Spirit within us we can overcome as we depend of God. Lewis simply has the intent of making people aware of the tricks of the devil.

Our souls are perfect coming into this world, we are reflections of the Divine Creator. Most of the evil, if not all of it, is done or created by people, people without knowledge. People also are affected by actions and events from previous lives, affectations which others or they themselves may have caused.

Wrong. Spinoza was definitely a Pantheist, since the attributes of nature (what moderns would call qualia such as forms, colors, etc), have their own conventional level of existence, but the Substance (Spinoza's term), of those apparent discrete "things" is the Ground of Being, Pure Consciousness. IOW, existence is One Substance, but it has conventional manifesttions.

@@thekingscourt . Thanks, by his own words do you mean he said "I am not a Pantheist", or do you mean your interpretation of his own words. Per Spinoza, the "world" (everything) is Substance, the very definition of Panetheism. The fact that qualia (appearances or what Schopenhauer calls "representations")(: exist in their own right as appearances, by no means implies they have a separate existence apart from Substance. This is essentially Shankara's Advaita Vedanta, only Substance is clearly defined as Pure Consciousness by Shankara), and can be equated with Aristotle' s Being-In-Itself, or Lao Tzu's Tao. The universe is One, forms ar many. AS the "One", not merely "in" IT.

@@yifuxero9745 Baruch Espinoza, claimed “whatever is, is in God, and, without God, nothing can be, or be conceived.” Spinoza's has been called a prophet and prince of pantheism, which is truly a false claim as shown in a letter to Henry Oldenburg, Spinoza's states “as to the view of certain people that I identify God with nature, taken as a kind of mass or corporeal matter they are quite mistaken.” these are his exact words in this letter. The whole world may classify him, and put him in a box, but only he knows the truth of his actual beliefs, and they are certainly expressed in this letter.

@@thekingscourt Precisely, he says that he doesn't identify God with nature. That's the other side of the coin of what he DOES identify "God" with. It's obvious, his "Substance" imo and others (do a search of "Spinoza and Advaita Vedanta). is Pure Consciousness "In-Itself", NOT the expressions or representations (Schopenhauer's term) of Substance, which are his two variants of nature (Natura). In Advaita Vedanta, everything IS Pure Consciousness. The Chandogya Upanihad uses the example of multitudes of clay pots with varying sizes and shapes. The clay is the metaphor for Pure Consciousness, while the shape are the discrete apparently separate objects. The separateness is a delusion. or Maya. Incorrect physicists like De Grasse Tyson mistakenly believe that Spinoza's Substance is the sum total of the material universe and its natural laws, or nature. Wrong!

A fairly good introduction: is "What is Spinoza's God" at Let's Talk Religion. Still, this misses the important of what IS "Substance". This is the Essence of existence that can be directly experienced when one transcends the duality of relative existence in the state of Samadhi or Satori.. There are techniques for doing this derived from ancient Buddhism and Hinduism. Begin with some of of the non-dualist teachers such as Rupert Spira, Dr. Tony Nader, and Swami Sarvapriyananda.

Thx, I disagree with that statement (as a proponent of Advaita Vedanta). The primal "One" Substance or Essence of existence is Consciousness. Sound and Light are expressions AS Consciousness. The net result is that (obviously) Jesus is an incomparable Light being, but a rock is not. However, both (and everything else), is equally Pure Consciousness. That's something experiential in the nondual state. Thus, Consciousness is prior and more fundamental than Light and Sound, since these are "qualia" or distinctions. Pure Consciousness "In-Itself" is a unified Essence that has no ultimate distinction. Consider a vast ocean of pure Being (C.). The waves on the surface are representations, some very small and others quite large and powerful. Expressions like Light and Power distinguish humans from Jesus and YHVH, but AS Consciousness, there is only the vast Ocean of Consciousness. (Substance).

However, I must say that, in Islam, the description of paradise and the rewards offered are based on the understanding that human beings have innate desires and inclinations. Islam recognizes the fact that pleasure and sensuality are natural aspects of human existence, and it presents a vision of paradise that encompasses both physical and spiritual delights. Moreover, the principle of pleasure in paradise is derived from the teachings of Islam, which we believe originate from God Himself. @@thekingscourt There really is a disconnect between atheists and theists that really does not have to be. i can only tell you my truth but if you discard of that i can never hear you and you can never hear me. You assume that I was never once a Christian and never prayed that prayer and more and assume something must have gone awry simply because i do not believe as you do.It came to a point that I no could convince my mind to accept the things i was telling it to accept and that was beyond my control. Nothig you say can ever reach anyone if you are unable to look past your own perspective
