The Tamil Nadu Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has said that a deep depression in the Southwest Bay of Bengal is moving north-northwestward at a speed of 13 kmph.
The storm was reported to have intensified into a cyclonic storm Fengal at 2.30 pm on Friday (November 29), about 310 km north-northeast of Trincomalee, 260 km east of Nagappattinam, 270 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 300 km southeast of Chennai.
On Friday, very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam and Puducherry and Karaikal districts.
The storm is expected to move west-northwest and cross the north coast of Tamil Nadu - Puducherry between Karaikal and Mamallapuram near Puducherry as a cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 70-80 kmph with gusts of up to 90 kmph on Saturday (November 30) afternoon.
Several videos circulating on social media showed the extreme weather hitting several areas in Chennai since Friday.
