It looks like you have a drogue out, it that to keep the cat from surfing down the waves and then having the wave crash on the boat? That was an exhilarating video.

Pretty rough weather sailing! looks awesome! Does the drogue really helps? on steering the boat while surfing?, big difference if there is no drogue? Im just a sunfish sailor. Thanks for sharing the moment!
Hi MachTuck. Yea, the drogue makes a big difference, it slows you down but more so it keeps the boat on track during the big surfs and prevents the boat from going sideways into the the trough at the end of the ride. Thanks.

65+ is ok, but the gusts you may or should I say would get can be on 100knts good choice on the sea drogue and no cloth up! Been down there myself in 80+ and 11 meter swell with near twice that wave conditions, but on a 120 foot steel fishing boat, I must say I actually enjoyed it as I’ve never been sea sick and so long as nothing breaks or dies especially power I’m at home with it. As stated very nice job on a 39 Leopard!
Just finished “Voyage of the Madmen” re the 1968-69 round the world, solo, non-stop race (only one finished). This brought it to life. Thanks for sharing.

The camera will have made the sea less wild. For some reason you cannot capture the real sea state on film.

Bare poles plus a handkerchief genoa was all we needed to keep the boat going.
That's as scary as I've seen on TH-cam.......

Im trying to imagine my rib in that. I would not be happy . These waves are monsters. They haven't even got a sail up!
Did you go around June?
Not much filming gets done in those conditions. Would love to be there for about hmmm 3 4 hours then a nice meal hot shower 8 10 hours sleep then I would be done with it 😂

@@Jarvyboay Yea, only way to keep the boat in control -the handkerchief headsail kept the boat moving and the drogue slowed us down and kept us in line on the big surfs.

What warps or drogues are being towed?
Hi Adam -we dragged a 300 foot warp with a big bight at the end. Worked well, it slowed us down and kept us on track.
@@kennethhoiem5167 Did you have specific drogue chainplates or attach to cleats? Also do you think a jordan series would have been better in you scenario? Thanks for the video and your insights!

Awesome footage respect to the sailors those waves look big on camera but to actually witness them there must have been much larger enjoyed the sound of the wind too

can understand why you deployed a sea anchor ,the speed you'd be getting off the slopes of those waves would be off the chart .
