Hiking Lake O'Hara Alpine Circuit | Yoho National Park, Canada
Distance (out & back): 16 km • Elevation gain (total): 535 m • Max elevation: 2537 m
We hiked the Lake O'Hara Alpine Circuit on a perfect autumn day on September 22, 2023. This was our third year trying to make reservations, and we finally succeeded. We chose fall to avoid wildfires and see the golden larches, and the hike did not disappoint.
Due to road closures and construction along Hwy 1 from BC, we had to take the detour through the Kootenays, adding 2 hours to our drive. We woke up at 2 am to catch the 10:30 am bus and started hiking at 11:30 am. It took us a total of 8 hours to complete the loop, with about 4 hours of moving time, and arrived back at camp around 7:30 pm. We hiked clockwise, with the steepest part being the 500 m elevation gain over 2 km from Lake O’Hara to Wiwaxy Gap. Although the Opabin Prospect Lookout is arguably the most photographed of this circuit, our favorite section was from Wiwaxy Gap to Lake Oesa.
The trail was well maintained and very easy to follow, marked by blue squares and two parallel yellow lines. It also has many opportunities to branch off and return to camp if needed. Overall we had high expectations of the hikes around Lake O’Hara and we are happy to say that those expectations were met!
The next day, the weather turned a complete 180 and we hiked Odaray Grandview in rain, sleet, and snow. We got incredibly soaked and cold, so when we got back we decided not to camp another night. We'll try this hike again next time we’re there.

มุมมอง 2.2K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Distance (out & back): 20 km • Elevation gain (total): 950 m • Max elevation: 2667 m We hiked The Onion in mid-September 2023 on a gorgeous day, starting early. The trail starts at Bow Lake, next to Num-Ti-Jah Lodge, which has a coffee shop and rooms. The first 3 km are a flat walk around the lake, then across a dried riverbed to stairs leading up a ravine. Following the "Bow Hut Alpine Route" ...

Distance (out & back): 18 km • Elevation gain (total): 1740 m • Max elevation: 3500 m We summited Mount Temple during the Labour Day long weekend, 2 September 2023. We camped the night before at the Lake Louise soft-sided campground, and were excited to tackle this iconic hike on a clear-ish day amidst the worst wildfire season in Canada's recorded history. One of the biggest challenges we enco...

Distance (out & back): 16 km • Elevation gain (total): 1592 m • Max elevation: 1784 m Most of the hike is a bit of a grind, with the first 7 out of 8 km being in the forest with no real views. Once above the tree line, however, the hike all of a sudden gets infinitely more interesting. Being the tallest peak in the Vancouver North Shore, Brunswick Mountain is such a classic hike with relentless...

Hi there! Beautiful video. My name is Adrien, and I am a producer for The Weather Network. My team and I are creating a segment on the most beautiful trails in BC, and we would love to use parts of this video. Would you agree to give us permission to share parts of the video in our segment on @meteomedia /@weathernetwork and our Pelmorex Corp. properties, with onscreen credit to you? Thanks in advance!
Great video! I did this hike a few weeks ago, and have a video coming out next week about it. I'm going to subscribe to keep my eye on your channel!
Skied across the lake a few time when we shied up to the Wapta Icefield and Bow Hut. From there we skied to the top of Mt Gordon. Mt Rhonda, Mt Phillips. Did night skiing by moonlight on the Slope down Mt Gordon about the hut. Once we built Igloos and slept in it. Beautiful area.
Climbed temple and get a photo of Mt Hungabee then Hungabee with a photo of Temple and Paradice Valley in between. Which I hiked years earlier. Some of the best hiking and climbing in the world right here in our back yard in ALBERTA.
Thank you so much for the fantastic video !
Is it possible to get to the starting point with an RV?
Moraine Lake, the starting point, is closed to personal vehicles. You’d have to take a bus. More info here: parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/visit/parkbus/louise
This is an amazing hike and the scenery is just spectacular. Definitely want to visit this National Park. Thanks for sharing this. 👍👍. New Sub here! 🙂
It really is a magical place. Happy we can inspire you!
Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing. sub & 👍26
This is a crazy cool route 😳
Awesome video! Great edits! Also more longer videos!
Spectacular presentation my friend, shots are masterfully composed!
Do you remember what your total time on mountain was?
Total time was 5:42 including breaks, video recording and capturing drone footage. Our recorded moving time was 3:35.
@@peak_pursuits Thank you so much! That's not bad at all. Appreciate it.
Beautifully edited, friends. Exactly the review I was hoping to find. For anyone else with the same questions as me, you can see the toughest rope-climbing sections start at 4:50. The All Trails review makes it sound so scary but you guys make it look pretty doable. Thanks again! - Tim & Kristine
Thanks Tim & Kristine! Glad our video was useful to you and your comment encourages us to continue making content like this. 😊 Happy scrambling!
Love your videos, it makes me look forward to the hikes on my list!!!
Wonderful to hear our plan is working. 🥾
thanks
Nice video! Loved it. I really enjoyed this hike. Stunning vistas in every direction.
Thank you 🙏. You bet. And, it has such a diversity of terrain.
The shots are good but the music is not good take some more cinematic songs and Melodie’s without words
Epic video 👍👍👍👍
looks like a great mtb ride, lol
I am gonna head to Banff and hike solo next month, your series of videos are really informative, thank you! Wondering what's your favourite trail in the park?
The Onion is definitely one of our faves and we think it has the best return on effort ratio of the Banff hikes we’ve done. As to what to choose, it depends on the level of experience, fitness, available time and weather. Which hike were you thinking of doing?
@@peak_pursuits I am thinking the Onion and Big beehive + devil's thumb uhless you tell me there is better one. The diversity of landscape is the priority when I make choices
@@peak_pursuits and have you seen the ice cave during the onion trail ? I saw it in other people's video, but it was shot 2 years ago
> The diversity of landscape is the priority when I make choices If that is a priority, The Onion is an excellent choice. It was one of the most diverse hikes we have completed. Have you seen our Cirque Peak video (th-cam.com/video/bBojGkiNpCw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=iW6glJ67oYqg9K3k)? It's on the other side of the road from The Onion, has similar difficulty, and the terrain is diverse, but not as much. Past the ~60% mark, the terrain almost looks like it belongs to another planet having very interesting and colorful geology. > Big beehive + devil's thumb We almost did once, but only had to time partially complete it. It was lovely, but one important consideration is that this hike is in a tourist hot spot and it will be much busier. > and have you seen the ice cave during the onion trail Ah! We missed it. We'll have to look for it once we repeat this hike if it still exists.
@@peak_pursuits got it. Did you feel it's easy to keep the right direction in the Onion? I've been total wildness place several time, I know how easy to get lost even with Alltrails maps ... If you didn't see the ice cave , maybe it disappeared just like the huge ice chamber in the Saskatchewan Glacier, it collapsed this Feb. what a pity ...
Epic video!
The rock scrambling... I don't see a clear path. Is this well defined?
The best path is the one recommended by Parks Canada - link here: parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/activ/escalade-scrambling/temple. Unfortunately we don’t have a footage of the correct path. At 4:05, you can see us scrambling up a potentially dangerous gully (in the Parks Canada Guide, it’s Gully 2 of Section 5). The correct path is to the right of that, although it may not be obvious. Look for yellow and blue painted squares and make sure to follow the markers along the trail. Happy hiking! 🥾✌️
This was stunning scenery my friend. Such a great and inspiring experience! Love it
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Iceberg Lake! 😍
Thank you for allowing me to live vicariously through you 🙏
Haha anytime! 😄 Thanks for watching!
Your channel is definitely underrated
Thanks! Happy you’re enjoying it. ❤️
Love it!
Very nice 👌. On my "to do list" now
Definitely a must if you’re into scrambling. Hope you enjoy as much as we did! Let us know how it goes. 🙂 We plan on doing this again next month.
Came here from your alltrails review. Hopefully i can do this hike sometime soon lol
Enjoy the hike when you get the chance. Hope our video gave you a good preview!
Right at the end you can see the Goodsirs in the distance. One of them is higher. That's the only downside to this climb.
Dude, that's awesome. The music and the scenery kinda reminded me of ubigine valley hahah
See any bears? 🐻🐻❄🧸
Did you watch until the end? 🔭🐻
no golden larches?
Were you able to make it back to the shuttle ride in time to catch the last ride? Awesome vid!!!
We did with 30 minutes to spare. It took a lot of huffing and puffing 😮💨
Very well edited and great camera. I always use GoPro so its not as nice and natural. Loved it....even the wrong route.
Thanks Harlan! We've only used our iPhones to film so it's great to hear your positive feedback. We had an older version of GoPro and found that the stabilization was practically non-existent and the shots were very difficult to colour correct. So we ditched the GoPro and have since only used the cameras on our phones. 😄
Fantastically edited video, these hots are just stunning! Hats off my friend!
Glad you like our video! Coming from someone which such a lovely channel, it means a lot.
Amazing drone shots. Thank you for sharing. Subscribed to you channel a while ago. I watch your videos with my wife and we get inspired for our own adventures. Really awesome channel.
Aww, thanks! ❤️ We’re glad we could inspire you. Your feedback motivates us to keep making these!
@@peak_pursuits Yes of course. Your videos are short sweet and to the point. It's a nice content creating style. I know everyone has their own style of making outdoor videos and each style is unique and interesting. I like your videos because they reveal just enough footage and info to spark someone's interest to go there also. For example the Jade Pass video. Never heard of it before watching your video, so now I know that if I'm in that area I will defenetly try to include it in my schedule. So yeah I would definitely say to keep doing more videos. There are so many hikes and backpacking trips in BC alone that we won't be able to get bored of the outdoors. So blessed to live in literally Beautiful British Columbia :)
We appreciate your input and are very happy to hear that you enjoy our content. 😊 Totally agree with you on discovering new places. We used to live in Vancouver and would only hike in the Lower Mainland. After moving to the Interior we started exploring more, not just popular/iconic hikes in the Rockies, but also those that are less trafficked and/or underrated. The trails in Revelstoke and Glacier National Park are just some of them, and we feel extremely lucky to be able to explore these places and share our experience while we're at it. We're currently working through a backlog of videos from our hikes this season, so stay tuned! Hope we can keep inspiring you and your wife with all that beautiful BC and surroundings have to offer. 🏔️❤️
Very well done video you guys! Enjoyed it. Cheers!
Thanks, @HarlanFox! We’ve actually watched your videos many times when researching hikes in the area. We appreciate the work you put out there. 🤝
Thanks! Keep up the great videos!@@peak_pursuits
4:35 is WOW
Fresh air up there. And those views look unreal! ⛰🏔⛰⛰
Awesome video!
Thanks! Happy you enjoyed it 😄
I ended up doing that hike alone last fall. Due to several compounding reasons I wasn't quite able to get to the top, but close. Amazing spectacular hike. But I really found it tough - all that boulder hopping that just goes on and on really gets old, and the "trail", where it exists, is constantly so hard to find and stay on when you're a ways past the lake. I can't wait to go back!
Hike looks epic.
awesome
Simply wow and so well produced. Thanks for sharing.
Really glad you like it! Hopefully, it gave you a good idea of what the hike is like.
@@peak_pursuits I have a followup question regarding use of drone.. I am considering getting 1 and live in Vancouver. Are there "geo-zones" or other areas that make it simply not usable either by law or otherwise?
For hikers with drones, the zones to be concerned about are provincial and national parks which never allow drone flight. Luckily, the Vancouver area still has a lot of mountains and hikes that are outside these protected area. Some examples include Mount Harvey and Brunswick Mountain (which we recently published a video about th-cam.com/video/VjMBdq4x6FQ/w-d-xo.html). You can find more information about the restricted zones at nrc.canada.ca/en/drone-tool/, but the tool strangely does not include provincial parks. Be mindful that any drone heavier than 150g requires it to be registered and that the pilot gets a license. Sorry about the super late reply. It took us a while to get used to the comment UI in TH-cam Studio.
Thank you very much for inspiring me to do this hike later this summer. Superb views captured in your video. Keep climbing high!
Imagine taking a misstep on an easy part of the trail 🙃🙃🙃 I wouldn’t want to even step foot lol
Firstly, one should not be looking at a phone while walking… never mind hiking 😆

It looks stunning omg
