Hey it's Pc! Here's a glimpse of what it's like to be a student at International Christian University (ICU) in Tokyo, Japan.
What You Need to Know About JLP (International Christian University)
It's been a while since I last uploaded, but I thought it would be helpful to share a little bit about my experience taking the Japanese Language Program (JLP) at International Christian University in Tokyo, as many of you have commented in my last video. I brought in one of my good friends to help explain what the program is like at ICU. Let us know if you have any questions in the comments below! Thanks for watching!

hello pls can i connect to any masters student in ICU, either present or past
I`m very envious of Japanese students who enroll in ICU where they can socialize a lot of young people with diversified background. Since Japan is a highly homogenized society, we`re not accustomed to get along with people from overseas though our country is interwoven with the rest of the world. I hope ICU will play a more important role to internationalize our insular country.
I been self tutoring, to admit it's difficult
I'm from Liberia. Can you give me a brief description of the application process.
all on their website; you need letter of recs from teachers
I’m applying for 2024, cause I’m still in school haha
I'm i n 10th grade in 10 moths i can start applying
Hey i would like to ask if all the classes are going to be taken in Japanese (especially the classes for your chosen majors from the 2nd year) Also whether you are able to study abroad as an exchange student to another country. I am Japanese but because i was in an international school, im interested in studying abroad but also make my Japanese skills better so i was wondering.
Is it difficult to apply for icu?
Waiting for your next video! I can't wait to got to ICU *wink wink*
I GOT INTO ICU!! I was thinking so much that I wasn't going to get in, but I did! If anyone looking to apply to ICU wants to know my stats such as SAT score, grades, activities and achievements in regards to my application, feel free to ask. I know when I was applying to ICU there was a lot I had to get my head around, and there's not a lot of people making videos on ICU and stuff. So feel free to reach out to me, if you have questions. I'm not sure I'll 100% be attending ICU yet, but at least the biggest fear has been lifted off my chest.
yeah i would like to know if SAT are an American exam or if its a general test that needs to be taken before going to ICU. I have been interested in going to ICU for 4 years now, at first i was going to try and study abroad through my university but i dropped out 2 years ago. I wanna know how difficult it is to get into ICU from having a college certificate ( I also have a certificate of doing a summer school at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies)
kasumikat Yes, the SAT is a nation wide exam in America taken by all high school students as a requirement for applying to college, as mostly all universities require them. Foreign universities (like ICU) also use it as an indication of your academic abilities. If you do not reside in America, or were you live does not conduct SAT testing, there maybe something equivalent to that of the SAT. If this is the case, and where you live does not do SAT testing, I’d look on ICU’s website and see whether they accept other testing options other than the SAT. I know that they accept International Baccalaureate scores as well. Also, can you clarify what a college certificate is? I’m really not sure about what they accept and do not accept. What I would do, is look on their website and read through the applying procedures. And if you still have questions, I would email them about it. Hope I could help. Feel free to ask me anymore questions that you might have.
I have so many questions... can you answer them on Instagram or any other type of social media? Or can you only answer it over here?
sau Yeah sure, message me at @luvtsu on Instagram. It’s an anime acc and just let me know that you want to know about ICU
I’m so happy you got in! I’m going to try and apple for ICU in 3 years when I graduate haha ^^
Hi may i know is there many reports or quizzes or assignments in ICU And if my japanese is not really good should i apply this university ??thanks
Depends on your course/prof and yes, if you would like to learn
Also, can any international student that applied and got in share what SAT score they had? Is it possible to get in with an 1100, 1200, or 1300?
man yolo yikes... I just finished applying to ICU last night. My SAT score is also really shit. .. 😨😨 Can u tell me a little about your application process to ICU? If you don’t mind. Also, are you going to attend Sophia? Also, where are you from?
@man yolo I think my essays are fine. A strong, “I think”. I had to wok fast since I had limited time. But, I do think I was conscious going about it. Not gonna lie, your comment is giving a lot of anxiety, lol. But uh, yeah. What did u right in all your essays. The personal statement. And then the question of your choice, as well as the last part about how do you feel about ICU? Um, also I'm assuming you applied for april? Oof, sorry for all the questions. One more, is it too late to apply for Sophia for September? I was look on their website a while back. And I think admissions were closed or something.
man yolo Also, damn. I’m just throwing a mountain of questions at you. But, was ICU one of your top choices?
man yolo Congrats man! Thanks for answering my questions. I’ll look into Sophia again.
@man yolo Update. I GOT INTO ICU!! I wasn't thinking so much that I wasn't going to get in, but I did! Not sure if I'm 100% going yet, going to wait for my decision from Temple University, Japan and then see. I didn't end up applying for Sophia because I don't have the money to pay another $300 on an application fee. I'm still shocked.
Hey, loved the videos and would love to see more! I got a few questions. Does ICU accept the US G.I. Bill? Is a math class required? And what are the requirements to getting admitted?
Hi Priscilla! Thank you for the insightful videos :) . It was really helpful since there are not many reviews available about ICU especially from the POV of a long term student. I want to ask, do you have any information about the graduate school? I mean like how's the reputation, what the grad students say about it? What do you think about? Thank you
Hey there! Unfortunately I don't know too much about their grad studies although I did take one graduate business class. There were only about 4-5 of us at the time but that became one of my favorite classes. I don't know too much about their workload otherwise but I know a few people I could ask. What other info would you like to find out?
@@helloitspc I think that's all. I can find things like majors and curriculum in the official website but I only have difficulties on finding honest opinion about the plus and minus of graduate school. Thank you for your answer :)))
Thanks so much, Priscilla! Great info on this school! Would you be able to link the scholarship form to the video description? Or if you wouldn't mind sending the link to the scholarship here..?
hi can you take classes other than your major?
Yes, you definitely can. One of the things I enjoyed the most about ICU was that I had the freedom to take the classes I wanted regardless of whether or not they were classified under my major. This opens up a lot more doors and is the reason why I switched from a Biology major to International Relations and Business.
wow and also can you join more than one club? are there also other circles in icu besides from whats on the website?
@@helloitspc Hi! I'm thinking about applying to ICU and I have a couple of questions about the process. Are you a native English speaker? And did you still have to take the TOEFL exam? Also, did you apply for scholarships? Also, what do you think about the ICU Peace Bell Scholarship? What are the chances of receiving it? I'm a person that struggles financially but would love to study in ICU. The application cost is also very expensive. If you did have scholarships, did they help you cover the tuition cost?
@@211candygirl Hey! Yes, since I attended school where English was the language of instruction, I didn't have to take the TOEFL. Instead, I had my guidance counselor write the school a letter confirming that I had been at that school for at least 6 years and can communicate in English. I explained this in my second video (I think) but I applied for Peace Bell when I applied to get into ICU and it helped a lot financially. About a handful of people get it every year. I think ICU also offers more scholarships now that can help pay off the admission fees (this is all on their website). If you're coming from outside Japan there are also a lot of other scholarships you can apply for that you'll find about after you gain access to the student portal :) I wasn't eligible for those because I'm a resident in Japan but I know a lot of other exchange students and such who got scholarships from JASSO. Hope this helps!
I got into ICU for September :)
That's great! Hope you enjoy!
Hi! I'm thinking about applying to ICU and I have a couple of questions about the process. Are you a native English speaker? And did you still have to take the TOEFL exam? Also, did you apply for scholarships? If so, are they helping you cover the tuition cost?
Did you take ICU entrance exams in English? What was it like?
No I didn't, international students don't have entrance exams--only the standard application process (application form, essays, etc.). I did have to take the SAT and submit my scores but that's a different standardized exam that I needed to schedule in my own time.
Priscilla Balona Oh😓 So I still need to take the entrance exams in Japanese. I’m studying here in Japan for 2 years now(Not and international school) I can speak Japanese pretty well, but I can’t read Kanji and was hoping to take the test in English. Thank you for replying tho.😊
@@helloitspc how much was the admission fee? My friend got into another japanese university and it was like 1800. I'm just wondering if that's the norm for elsewhere in Japan?
@@Hersheychocolate12 Yes unfortunately that's normal for many universities in Japan. I think ICU's might even be around double that: www.icu.ac.jp/en/admissions/finance/
Hello! I am a student who is interested in transferring to ICU from community college. Do you have any tips for application process?? (Like writing essays and personal statement) 😊 I wish I can get in too 😌
I would treat it like any other university application and get my essays edited (and re-edited) by peers/teachers. Just be honest and let them know what you have to offer :) I hope you get in too!
How do u get accepted into the university
Thank You ^_^
THANK U FOR THIS! im going to ICU next month and this was so informative~
I'm going to be applying for 2019. How did you pay?
For tuition? I was able to pay most of it off through a scholarship. Other people I know were able to work part-time or get loans.
Hi! I am a freshmen student enrolling in ICU this september. Thank you for the videos about the school! It really helped me a lot :D. I would really appreciate if you share about living expenses like food?
Ahhhh thank you! I'm attending this coming September and this was very helpful!
Thank you Priscilla - a GREAT help this!! Bless ya.
Thanks for the information,, God bless you more.. Im a Filipino Too:)
This was honestly so helpful, I have been looking to go to school in Japan but my family is sooo not with me moving there by myself lol (I'm from Florida so its a super long flight) but your videos helped the family relax and be more at peace with me leaving :))
Hey! I'm glad this was helpful--is there anything else in particular that you'd want to know more information about? Let me know!
Jesus is coming back. Believe He died for your sins and rose again then repent to be saved. For it is written, As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God [acknowledge Him to His honor and to His praise].
I need more videos. I’m currently applying rn. I just wanna know so much more. 🧡 love the videos
Arriannah thanks for watching! Anything in particular you'd like to find out more about? What are you most worried about when thinking about applying to or attending ICU?
Omg im just now seeing this rewatching this video and I wanted to know if its hard to get into ICU?
I can't say it's easy but that also depends on whether you're enrolling in April, or as an international student in Sept. I think April admissions are a little tougher because there's an exam and generally more people applying. With that said, as an international student you would still have to get good grades, SAT score, etc., and be involved in your school/community.
@Timothy Num Yes, as long as you complete all the requirements and have all the documents that are required upon application. You don't have to be good at Japanese to get in. They will put you in the right class based on your level :)
I'm planning on studying abroad at ICU next fall! My question is how immersive is it (on campus, in the dorms, etc.)? My goal going to Japan is to gain as much knowledge of the language culture as I can and I don't want to be able to fall back on English if that makes sense.
Hey Talia--the easy answer is it's really up to you how much you want to get out of your experience. I see some exchange students who stick together, and others who put themselves out there and join clubs on campus and make lots of Japanese-speaking friends. My experience might be a bit old, but when I was in the dorms, it was very Japanese and so is the overall campus as the administration and staff (aside from professors) are Japanese. You can check out my other videos about ICU which might help as I talk a bit about the cultural atmosphere at ICU!
Hi Priscilla! It was nice bumping into your videos. I'm planning on going on an exchange student program to ICU next school year. Any advice about the accommodation? Also, don't the university host the exchange students from other countries? Or do the students need to shoulder their own accommodation expenses? What about stipends from the university? I hope you happen to know something about these. :)
Hayven Ten Hi! Thanks for watching! Yes, there are a lot of exchange students at ICU and most apply for on-campus housing in the old dorms, the new dorms, or the "new new" dorms. The older dorms are a bit cheaper, but I know of a few exchange students who chose to live in a sharehouse or their own apartment to save on expenses. I would recommend living on campus though, as it is much easier to meet new people and settle in. But yes, even though it is an exchange program you still are expected to figure out and pay for your own accommodation. With that said, I also know many students who came to ICU on scholarships and were given monthly stipends. I think this may also depend on which school you are coming from, but there are definitely scholarships you can apply for as an international student. Hope this helps!
You're Awesome!
Rip me going to apply for the summer school (which i heard is intensive Japanese) I feel like with my knowledge (of going to 1 term course in Japanese learning center, 1 year of self teaching and 1 term in university of studying Japanese) id be put into the lowest level for Japanese (ive done my Hiragana and half of my Katakana from self teaching myself) I was wondering do they reject you if you cant do the basic Japanese? or at least know all your hiragana and katakana
Nope! They'll teach you everything from the very beginning. I know quite a few people who took JLP but came in not knowing any Japanese. Don't worry about not being able to get in--the test is just a matter of knowing which class to place you in. If you don't know any Katakana/Hiragana, they'll put you straight in J1 without even taking the test, but you sound like you have your basics down! I'm not too familiar with the summer program though, as I've only taken JLP as a regular undergraduate student at ICU. Hope this helps!
Thank you!
Hej! I'm thinking about applying and these vids are a great help! Can you do a vid on the JLP especially for an international student with no Japanese?
Jane waters hey, I've meaning to but didn't realize that this many people would want to know more about JLP. I cant promise that it'll be up soon, but I'll be on it as soon as I can! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this video!! It was EXTREMELY helpful! Please do moreeeee! <333
Glad to hear that! Thanks for watching
thank you yet again for your video, i hope to see more about your experience at ICU. I also have another question (which i think you already answered) is it difficult to get into ICU? like i checked their uni ranking and they're in the top 15 in Japan :O
kasumikat I guess that depends on whether you're coming in in September or April; I think April entry students have to take an exam. Japanese schools in general though are not necessarily as rigorous as other universities in the U.S. or Europe, for example.
thank you for this video, ive been looking at a few vloggers the past year on their experience at ICU and their video inspires me to really want to go to ICU <3 (its my dream university i want to study abroad to) though last year when i applied for a university that would let me study abroad to ICU i got rejected :( and now im at my current university that wouldn't let me study abroad to ICU... luckily i just recently thought about applying for the summer school program for next year :) my question is, do you have any advice on getting scholarships for studying abroad for the summer school?
kasumikat I don't know too much about summer school but if they offer scholarships for the program , you would have a much better chance if you were coming from abroad. I do think they look at your credentials holistically so if you're involved with extracurriculars and do well academically it shouldn't be too difficult. Sorry I can't help you with any specific details!
maybe can you use the subtitles
slowly speak please ok
Thank you, Priscilla, for this introductory films on ICU, and JICUF, which I have known since 1952. You've captured some of the most essential, everyday life for students on the campus. No exaggeration, no hidden agenda. Yash
