They Remade It
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 14 ก.ค. 2020
A film-lovers podcast starring Jacob and Stuart, two movie-lovers who just want to analyze the then and now. Every episode, they'll compare and analyze the themes of different films based on the same work, whether they be remakes, reboots, or long-overdue sequels.
Episode 117: The Year in Review (2024)
Stuart and Jacob have made it through yet another year, but they aren't done talking yet! They have the whole of 2024 to go over, and they have some thoughts on a range of topics (and maybe a rant or two as well). Throughout the course of this longer than average episode, they discuss varying aspects of the year, reviewing The Oscars , upcoming releases, a few of the individuals that were lost, and they reflect on their favorite (and least favorite) films that they saw this past year. Happy Holidays and to a prosperous new year!

Ah, and both pictures are lousy, too, Brando or not Brando.
That's lousy! Who wish to hear these two nerds? I don't.
In my garage looking for something to listen to while working on my car, 2001 is my favorite movie so I clicked on this, really good podcast, enjoying it so far. You got a sub.
We're glad you enjoyed!
I watched both, I did like the 46 version better, but I think the 81 version was a good remake, except the title doesn't really make sense anymore, unless you've seen the 46 version and know it's a remake. But both versions are a good watch.
I was watching mad mad world cause its free on TH-cam and even based on the description was like 'oh this was what rat trace was based on' obviously... glad to see someone had handles making this comparison and now I'm going to check out all of your guys stuff lol
Thank you! Hope you enjoy what else we have to offer!
"Movies need to get to the point and be done." - That's why I don't bother with a lot of TV series. It feels like a lot of padding just to keep the episodes coming in. Geeze, it almost sounds like there are two movies that happen to have the same name, but only by co-incidence. I've never seen the new one, and it's been a LONG time since I saw the original. I remember taking it as Jacob was dying and he kept flip flopping between his view as the afterlife being something he can welcome and something that's taking him away from something else. So there's no angels or demons, there's just his perception of what's going on around him and the beings that are there. For me, at its core, it's a simple concept: a man is struggling with transitioning to the afterlife. There were a couple moments in the original did creep me out. I remember when Pena's character was yelling at Robbin's in the kitchen, and they do a couple cut aways between her face and his and at one point she has these black eyes. That was unsettling for me.
This episode's gonna be Shrekin'
"I don't like either of them." - *visible shock* I didn't think it was possible to dislike the 2012 movie. I love this movie! I mentioned on your Instagram page, I think it's the best modern action movie. I remember 19 year old me being disinterested when I watched the 95 movie, and thinking "this is stupid." But not a good stupid. "[Karl Urban] can do some mouth acting." - When companies and actors like to be able to show off the face that accompanies the price, I gotta give him credit for being willing to keep that helmet on the whole time. Rob Schneider - Maybe Sly thought "hey, you were fun in Demolition Man, come on over to my new movie!" "Generic backdrop" - From what I remember (it's been 25 years), that describes the '95 movie well. Like, did it matter that it took place in the Judge Dredd universe? They got him out of that outfit so fast, he could have been any future good-guy framed for a crime, then escapes and delves into the underworld. It could've been The Fugitive 2139 for all it mattered. I think Dredd did a much better job with this. It takes place in a megablock, and there's a rookie judge getting tested, and they got their special judge guns, and there are corrupt judges that come into it, and we see how the medic responds to the judges vs the environment they're a part of. It feels like it tells a story of just another day in Mega City One, but the trainee throws things off in Dredd's day just a little bit. It just seems to matter more what world they're in, to me. So I'm on the other side for this point from you guys. And then it circles back in a way to Anderson's desire to want to make a difference. It kind of both shows a judge can and can't. There's no major win for the city, but there's a win for the block. I also think the size of the block did matter for the world building, but I won't bother getting into that. I also think the colour is also handled very well in 2012. It makes the slo-mo scenes pop!
First. And I can more or less agree a lot with what you are saying with the two Alice in Wonderland movies. Though my favorite character from the original 1951 animated movie was either Tweedledee or Tweedledum. I kinda find them constantly bumping into each other and all the clown nose/honking noises to be funny. And the 1951 Alice in Wonderland movie is one of my favorite Disney movies. Certainly one of Disney's most underrated movies too if you ask me.
I couldn't agree more, its a fantastic movie
The Fudge Mountain conundrum - It's a fairy tale feeling. All of the absurd stuff in the new version that creates that unsettling or nonsensical feeling has that classic Burton fairy tale tone. And I like that. It's a little like the Jacob's Ladder move, (which is a weird comparison I didn't think I would make); you see what you see. Charlie loves it and sees the joy and wonder. If you do not love it, it's a nightmare. I like the new one more.
Love the Burton film.
Comments as I go.
Of the MCU, Winter Soldier is still my favourite. Fun spy/war action/adventure.
I do like the over-top-ness over the original. I find the absurdity of it all helps with the caricature they're trying to draw. It almost reaches Starship Troopers levels of satire.
I also saw the original in theaters, and at 11 years old (you know how 11 year olds go to R rated movies) the fun and spectacle of it all has probably stayed with me.
I should rewatch the new one. I didn't hate it when I first saw it, but nothing really memorable happened for me. That's where the first one shined: delivering all those unforgettable scenes.
DREDD IS FANTASTIC!
This was an interesting comparison to see. I hadn't heard of Zero Hour before, so I though Airplane was ALL about spoofing the Airport series.
My favourite movie: Aliens. My unpopular opinion: Death to Smoochy is a good movie. Any plans for a RoboCop comparison? I didn't notice it in your uploads.
We don’t have the rest of this year fully ironed out, but we really should. Robocop, Total Recall, and Judge Dredd were some of the first on my mind when we started the show and we’ve only covered one of those so far! -Jacob
I should rewatch the new one, because I probably didn't give it a fair shot the first time. I don't remember much about it. I don't know why they would make a movien so different from. The original and also move it even farther away from the source story. The original movie is just filled with "remember when" moments where the remake had 0 for me.
I've seen them both and remember little about either. For what it's worth, if I could only rewatch one, I'd go with the 2018 one.
I have so many thoughts about Tron. I wrote a song dedicated to the first movie: th-cam.com/video/oQ4_E3a-eWI/w-d-xo.html I had a whole theory around how Legacy shows a society who have loss belief in their gods compared to the first one. In the first the religious components were made very obvious, but in the second they were subdued. This can be seen with the little things like when a program died via disc they're spirit of sorts could be seen ascending. In legacy they just kind of collapse into a pile. The replacement for God in Legacy was the father figure. From the point of view of the "children", both Sam and Clu could have has a sense of abandonment. Something that crossed my mind when I was listening to your commentary about Clu's motivation for the games was that Clu may have gotten that from Flynn, since he was made in his image. In Legacy I would have also liked to have seen a more diverse world. I think of the control programs in the first (who Flynn referred to as "live ones"), and how seeing characters like that would have been fun. The last thing I'll say is that I believe Cillan Murphy's character was intended to be setup as a villain for another sequel, which never happened.
Wow, that’s all honestly fantastic! Thank you for sharing. And looking back on it, that’s gotta be the point of Cillian Murphy, they leaned so hard into promoting Legacy they were likely expecting a bigger response
You have great podcasts guys, keep doing what y'all are doing I'll be doing my best to catch up on yalls podcasts
