Scarborough 1963
Colour cine footage of a day out at the east coast seaside town.
***************************************************************************************************
Beverley born and bred, Joseph Wilson worked in Hull as a detective constable with British Transport Police and served with distinguished service in the Green Howards. Joseph enjoyed nothing better than filming family events, his holidays at home and abroad plus capturing his home town and place of work. He used to shoot in colour film which was much more expensive than the commonly used monochrome. His films now stand as documents of life in a different time and grow more important with each passing year. Enjoy!

      All those streets, all those homes long gone but you have your memories. The peculiar chimneys of the smoke houses was something I always looked for from the train when coming to visit my grandad and walking to fish dock. I am so grateful he made these little films. I j=know he would be thrilled that they were bringing back memories for so many people. Films he only ever expected his family to view.

    Mine and my cousins family went there approximately 1966. My uncle , cousin, and I went on the cable car. As we started moving , the wind started to build up and the cable car started to swing from side to side . The cars seemed to go quite fast . The higher we got , the stronger the wind blew. Suddenly, at the very highest point of the journey , the car stopped dead. , swinging violently from side to side. We had to wait until they finally started the cars moving again...quite a while afterwards. When we eventually got back, we found out the cars had been stopped because of very high winds. No one knew we were on it. Never again...

      @@josephwilson-hiswonderfulw3865 OK I had'nt appreciated that business about a silent film.We take all that so very much for granted nowadays witrh modern video devices.Still a bit of moonlight senata or something like that would have been nice 🙂

      You're not kidding. Is the North Sea ever warm? They were brave folk to have a dip but that's what the British do on holiday.

    Somewhere if I can find it I have a picture that my grandfather took from the top of the towers while the bridge was still under construction. He was able to take a ride up the elevator and took a still photo from the top showing the cables stretching across to the other towers, with no decking or roadway installed. Scary photo just looking at it. Different time when you could get that close to a major construction project!

      What an interesting photo to own and a rare view no doubt at that early stage of the construction. It's very interesting to hear about it and your grandfather's rid eup the elevator which in itself must have been nerve-wracking. Thanks so much for taking time to comment. Hope you enjoyed the film.

    Hi! Is it possible for me to use and share this footage on my youtube page? I share footage from all kind of activities on our ocean. Cargo ships in the 1960s till now, oil rigs, fishing vessels, etc. Of course full credit will be given to the owner of the footage. Thanks in advance for your reply. Kind regards. Cheers

      Yes that's fine as long as there is on screen credit to "Joseph Wilson - His Wonderful World of Cine". I would appreciate you letting me know when you have shared the footage.

      @@josephwilson-hiswonderfulw3865 I have very vague memories of going to see the Humber bridge being built. I do remember travelling many places in your dads robin reliant van which I think was a beige brown colour. Many many happy memories.

      I do remember going down to the docks and hessle road with your dad, he took us aboard many ships.

    • @josephwilson-hiswonderfulw3865
      @josephwilson-hiswonderfulw3865 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you're right about the robin reliant. He had that when they lived at Flemingate. If grandma and grandad were in the front and I was the only passenger I would have to sit in the middle in the back to keep it balanced. Or when they had two passengers we each had to sit on a wheel arch for the same reason. You can see the van in the first few seconds of the Skirlaugh film.

      I used to love Hessle Road as there were loads of second hand shops and I could pick up a few records. Going to fish dock is one of my best memories.
