My Callsign is AI5DD. I'm a relatively new amateur radio operator, getting my ticket on May 27th 2020 during the beginning of the human malware virus. I love field radio, QRP, and my favorite mode is CW. I prefer to make my videos raw (inspired by K4SWL). I hope people learning CW Morse will try to copy the code in my videos and be inspired like I have been by so many others. I am still building and learning. 72/73 de AI5DD Joseph Anthony (Joe). I hope to hear you on the bands.

Speaker Wire Antenna first use
POTA 2025-02-01
I took the specifications from K4SWL's Speaker Wire antenna video and built my own. 28.5' with about an inch and a half so I could make a loop at the end of the white stripe radiating element. I have to say it was an astounding success on 20 meters. I haven't tested it on any other bands. I will save that for a future video.
Edit: 2025-02-03
The key I was using (CWMorse.us SP4 POTA/SOTA) was dropping dits and the dah was adjusted too close, I think I fixed it by filing the contacts and giving more length on the dah side. I used it the next day and it worked a LOT better while hunting QSOs at a friends QTH outside testing the Speaker Wire Antenna on other bands.

@@thehighskyguy thanks for hunting, hope to get you in the logs again. 73, keep it up, glad to hear new CW operators!
That sounded like a busy place! I'm curious why you weren't also doing Field Day and then summit your log to POTA since you were in a POTA park?
I did do some WFD QSOs after my activation, but my battery died and I didn't cover that.

@@WA2OUZUpstateNYHam-m5f thanks for the support, it's a great rig and worth the wait.
I was wrong concerning the Z-Match tuner, on the Penntek it's just simply inline or not. It has to be set to inline to be able to use it/tune it.
Love that bug
Thanks, I'm so glad I learned to use both an electronic key and a bug/straight key.
A straight key activation is somewhere down the road for me. Love your fist. What’s the brand of that blue speaker and how does it compare to the mainstream Anker Bluetooth Amazon speaker that most activators use?
Thank you! The blue speaker I bought at the local Academy, the brand is Ecoxgear. I like it, the battery seems ok, I used it again today. I will post that video in the next hour.
I realized after reviewing my video, the N3DC QSO was MD not MI. 😓
Man I’m jealous of your straight key fist.
@@JoeN2DI Thanks, you can do it with practice OM. Never give up.
A paddle is just a paddle but a straight key is an ACTUAL KEY lol 😉 Seriously though, paddles are over-rated for most purposes. I liked the video a lot!

I've been tossing around the idea of doing this to my FTDX10. Do you feel it was worth it?
@@KY4CQ_HamRadio I believe it is.
Do you find that that style thumbscrew is just a few too many threads short? Mine barely goes through the part that holds up the arm. I have emailed DX engineering for an explanation but no reply yet. I am tempted to order one from Vibroplex and see if they have the same batch still. Being a little short, its hard to get any purchase on the arm and so can work loose easily.
Mine seems ok, I would call Vibroplex. The guy who answers I believe is the owner and he may send you an other part.
@@ai5dd I bought another one directly from them and it is exactly the same. I even wrote on the order notes my concern. So I guess they have supplied what they think is long enough - I will just try pinching it in a 1/4 turn more - if I break it I now have a spare! I have also bought a small, med and large extra weight so can add weight that way too.
There was an episode of twilight zone where a ghost reached out through code and Also there was a film called "frequency" where a dude was able to speak to his dead father over the radio.. The thought of speaking back and forth rhrough time is fascinating. Have you ever picked up anything out of the ordinary?

That QRP Labs QCX Mini 20m, was my first kit radio build. After that rig I built a 40 meter version. I love the Elecraft T1 ATU, it's essential! I highly recommend it.
Yay! Another QCX Mini on the air! What band is it? I have built 4 of the minis, and recently the QCX+ for a friend. I often take the Minis on SOTA activations 👍👍 / N0DET
It's a 20 meter version. I'm building a 40 soon and hopefully a QMX later. I love this radio! It was fun to build.
So glad to see you finally have your QCX Mini operational. I REALLY enjoy all of mine. Don't let tonight's operations be an indication of this little Jewel's capabilities. Conditions tonight were less than optimal. I didn't do well hunting with my QRO rings from y shack tonight on 40, 30,20 meters. The RBN picked me up on 17 and 15 meters but I got no takers. Have fun with it.
Thanks! I'm happy to get the contacts I did, I got a total of 6 with two being in Canada. I have a 40 meter version to build this weekend :). I will activate POTA this weekend as well if the weather holds. 72/73
