After Newtown - Concerto for Euphonium by Dr. Mark Lewis
After Newtown serves as a non-narrative reflection on the devastating impact of senseless mass gun violence that continues to afflict our nation. It expresses innocence lost and stands as a eulogy and prayer, both expressing grief and seeking solace.
The work was premiered in piano reduction with Tom Burge, euphonium soloist, and the composer on piano at the 2023 International Tuba and Euphonium Convention at Arizona State University in June 2023. The arrangement for the wind orchestra is being premiered at tonight’s concert by Tom Burge, euphonium, and Carolinas Wind Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Lorrie Crochet.
