How Edgar Wright Uses Comedy to Make You Care
มุมมอง 8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
A video essay on one of the leading filmmakers working in the industry today, Edgar Wright (Baby Driver, Hot Fuzz), and how he uses comedy to make you care about his characters. ~ Socials ~ Instagram - dan_pressey Letterboxd - letterboxd.com/danpressey/ Twitter - danielpressey Thanks for watching :)
Wow!
*The greater good*
I revisit this video from time to time, it reminds me as to why I love Edgar Wright's writing. Like I knew what he does already but you put it into words and into a video flawlessly. Great job matey!
Great video. Awesome script and editing.
"Promosm"
Great video!!
this is great man, keep it up!
I love how BB (vape girl) is the best side character, and she’s such a teen caricature of how adults see Gen Z, but she’s just that. She’s not into everyone’s drama and is just a hype girl. Someone who would leave high school saying “well that was fun”
The show is great, and it's not just a show for chicks there's a lot of action in it too. Very thrilling
Love this! Thank you for making it so simple to understand these nuances. Subscribed and definitely going to watch euphoria again in a new light.
GR8 vid
Euphoria is what Marvels’ Eternals should’ve been imagine Euphoria being 1 movie
I love your videos. They’re so classy and well edited. Your voice is also kinda soothing, and the visuals really make the video more compelling to watch. Keep it up!
agreed
I like how im just flitting back and forth between video critics giving credit or shitting on Euphoria and i must say i am inclined to side more with the Pro-Euphorians lol
Answer in one word Skins
Euphoria better
@@terrencejames2377 lmao no need to compare, skins was for my generation, euphoria is for this generation, both are justified in between the time frame they exist is
criminally underrated video, this is great
Kat turned from a likable character is season one to a rather distasteful one in the second.
Right?! It’s crazy bc throughout the release of season 2, I’ve been one of the people consistently defending the show, and though I agree that season 2 hasn’t been “bad” exactly, watching this video made me realize that it is in no way the same quality of season 1. I re-watched season 1 *seven times* when it first came out. Season 2 has had its moments where it’s been super impactful, but it also really has had its lows where I’m like wtf is this (like kat’s whole break up scene) and idk I’m looking forward to the finale coming up and I bet it’ll be great but I have no plans to re watch the season afterwards.
@@Ogirl221 i agree, s2 had also boring moments, like cal's backstory i was like wtf, that could as well be put in 5 minutes instead of 15
Really great analysis, subbed!
the actual cinematography of this video is so beautiful...
Great video
killer vid
love this video
I love your vid, great work! I missed Euphoria, excited for season 2!! More videos and subscribers to come!!! ❤
Thank you :) means a lot
Today I keep finding underrated channels, you’re one of them. Also i love your editing and the way you say your lines. I just subbed, keep up the great work!
thanks man! means a lot.
@@danielpressey no problem!
Really good! There was great craft used in this video essay. Keep it up.
The algorithm will pick you up one day dude, very good video 👍
thank you my man <3
Cool, thank you this was a wonderful one for me, keep it up
Can't wait for season 2, those interim episodes were great character studies that I feel will make S2 even better.
Did it ?
Well, it wasn’t
well.

I've seen some video essays about edgar Wright, and I cant believe I havent seen any of his movies yet. I also cant believe how little subs you have, you're very underrated.
Very good video from you. I subscribed cuz u deserve it. U are really talented🙌
ty so much :) means a lot
Damn I thought you had like atleast 10-100k subs, damn u only have less than 200, keep it up, you’ll get there
thanks man, means a lot :)
LOL i thought this was Karsten Ruinquist based on the Profile pic and the thumbnail. Good Job on the vid tho!!
Awesome video man, I'm curious what you thought of the two special episodes cause think they add an emotional depth to Euphoria that I hope they carry over
thanks my guy, and i thought they were incredible! euphoria seems like it's the only show to actually benefit from the pandemic, seen as we wouldn't have got those episodes without it. i'm sure they would have developed those elements of rue, jules and ali's characters in season 2 to some extent, but it definitely wouldn't have had the same intensity and effect, and i really think they needed these longer focused episodes to develop them as well as they did.
@@danielpressey I agree man. I feel Sam Levinson has an interesting trilogy with those two episodes and malcolm and marie
@@okdthefmv same! I actually liked Malcolm & Marie more than most people seem to, definitely not on the level of Euphoria but still an interesting result of the pandemic era of filmmaking.
@@danielpressey I do think Sam Levinson is one of the most interesting creators out there. Can't wait to see what you make next and may the algorithm see the gold you're making
@@okdthefmv big love man <3 I checked out your video on rue pt 1, really good stuff! you touched on some great points and just really nice commentary in general, keep it up :)
I never even realized how much foreshadowing there is, you really made me realize how much detail goes into this show.
thank you man :)
Yeah this show is a masterclass in managing an ensemble cast. Your
Great video. I like how you were detailed in how characters were introduced and how their personalities shined through. I like how you describe mckay to have anxieties and is different from Nate because it shocks me that some says that mckay was worse or on the same level as Nate. Mckay was not perfect but its sad that not a lot of fans understood his story. I think its becuase he was very underwritten. He got a whole episode and still felt like a background character. He had the shortest backstory and half of which was not about him. It was not as detailed as everyone else backstories. His episode was more about Cassie than it was about him. We follow her in his episode . even his sexual assault was about her. He was sexual assault and emasculation by all white men( look up the historic context of that) and the writer chose to focus on Cassie afterward. WTF ?? ?? I think that the fact rue is a unreliable narrator and this is from her pov and she doesn't know mckay that well is the reason why he was so underwritten.
McKay is for sure one of the most underrated characters, and 100% with you on your points on his lack of presence and underwriting. He's definitely not perfect, but neither is anyone, including Cassie. Hoping he gets a lot more development in the next season.
@@danielpressey i agree. Its sad a lot of fans didnt care about mckay. I have seen more empathy and sympathy for cal and Nate than mckay and that disturb me beyond words. Also Cassie . l love Cassie but she was not perfect either. She cheated the day after he was sexual assaulted. I dont understand this mckay was monster and Cassie was a misunderstood victim narrative fans like using. Mckay was like the most normal compared to everyone else with Lexi. He got an episode and still felt like a background character. He was the token black stereotypical jock with the weakest storyline and development who was more of a plot device for cassie than a character. I think his story can be interesting but the writer chose the least interesting aspect to somewhat explore: football instead of being black in a nearly all white town, his frat, his relationship with family. Where was his mom?, his friendship with nate, why he let people influence him, how toxic masculinity affects him and young men in general. Hell even his sexual assault( dry humping) was not explored. The writer completely downplayed it and shifted the focus to cassie instead of exploring his mental health and trauma which I am shocked that no one is mentioning and how they used the black male lead as a plot device for a white character and nothing more. They presented mckay in a one dimensional way I feel.
typically show, the black side kick is just there to help establish everyone's else's storylines.
Great video!
thanks! :)
the three flavour cornnetto is one of my fave film trilogys
Edgar Wright is a wonderful filmmaker may even make a Video Essay on him too :)
Great video bro! i didnt know about last nigth in soho but psychological terror by Edgar Wright? count me in.
thank you man, so hyped!
Edgar Wright is the best filmmaker ever. That's an opinion, of course, but I think he's objectively brilliant. Of the five films you listed, I love all five, and two of them are among my favourite films of all time.
totally agree. he's one of a small percentage of filmmakers that use the medium to it's full creative capabilities, and definitely deserves more credit.
Holy shit, how do you not have more subs?
thanks my dude :)
