If I have camping reservations in the park I don't need any type of other reservations?
Yes! This correct!
We are coming to Glacier Park on Amtrak, and have reservations at Glacier Park Lodge in East Glacier for two nights, August 17-19. We were planning to take Red Bus Tour, but see that we cannot make reservations for 2025. Do you know if or when we can make reservations in 2025?
You can usually book Red Bus Tours in the early spring months. I'd start looking in early March and check back on the website from then on.
You're definitely someone i would trust to handle this stuff ❤ Goodluck with the service and thanks for all the insights!
How is the hygiene there? What did you do for food? Any concerns about the vehicle being left, and did you just leave it at the trailhead? (Hard to tell if there is a place to park)
Hi, there! It was very clean--especially for a backpacking site. You most likely will need to pack all of your food in, though there is a little restaurant about two miles away from the campsite if you would like to do that instead. And yes--there is a parking lot at the trailhead and you leave your car there while you are backpacking.
i was thinking I would lighten the load a little, but not if it's a couple more miles, I want to do it in 2 days... hike in, rest a bit, see the falls, get up, and go the next morning. Another person was saying there is fry read at the falls too, so maybe I'll at least try it if you think it's safe. There was a whole bunch of people stuck there with norovirus earlier in the year. (Don't want to do the same excursion) Thanks soo much for sharing! Of the sights you've seen giving up a few days in order to experience, how does this rank? Would you go again?
This helped much more than other videos! I’m not much for crowds, and I have the luxury of traveling when I wish. I’m thinking mid to late September will be my goal. Thanks for the advice!
I'm so glad! And yes--this is such a great time to go. Do keep in mind that reservations for this year last into September, but the crowds should be a lot fewer by then!
⭐You can purchase the Salomon Quest 4 GTX hiking boots here: rei.rockporch.com/prdlink/bdgunYC7r2⭐
How far is it to the beautiful overlook of lower Grinnell Lake?
I'm strongly considering a trip to Glacier in Sept 2025 for my 40th birthday and trying to decide where to stay. There is some availability at Belton Chalet, which seems like a great option, but curious what the breakfast options are nearby?
You'll love it! Breakfast is available at the chalet, and you are very close to West Glacier and Coram, which will have a number of options, as well!
@ great! Thank you. Then do places nearby also offer premade/gran and go offerings to take with you for lunch?
@@bereMARKable1 Yes! There will be a number of spots that will have those.
❤❤❤ good work
Thanks for sharing this informative video❤❤ good job
Moregh ugh ugh
What are the timed reservation slots? Example 7-9am, 12-3pm. Is it random or can you select a time when booking?
They haven’t announced that yet, but once they do, I’ll be sure to make a short video on it!
All the best have a great weekend cheers 👉👉👍👍👌👌
Thanks! You too!
We appreciate all of the great info! Zion is on our radar for when we move to phase two of our journey. Thanks for the video!
You're going to have an amazing time!
I've always wanted to go here!
This is so helpful!
Can they work in winter also
I would say yes depending on what you plan on doing with them! They're not 100% waterproof (no hiking boots are), so if you are in deep snow then snow boots are probably better. Bringing along a pair of crampons is always a good idea too if you're dealing with heavy snow on the hiking trail.
Please keep in mind that not all in-park reservations will provide access to the restricted areas, for example if you have Apgar campground reservation you still need daily pass to enter Going-to-the-Sun Road from the west check point. Here's the official note: Lodging, camping (including front country developed campgrounds, which include Fish Creek and Apgar campgrounds and backcountry camping permits), transportation, or commercial activity reservations originating in Apgar will not provide access beyond the Apgar Check Point on Going-to-the-Sun Road. Lodging, camping (including front country developed campgrounds and backcountry camping permits), transportation, or commercial activity reservations originating east of Logan Pass cannot be used instead of a vehicle reservation for access past the Apgar Check Point heading east on Going-to-the-Sun Road. Visitors with service reservations along Going-to-the-Sun Road in locations east of Logan Pass (ex: Rising Sun and St. Mary campgrounds/boating) will need to enter Going-to-the-Sun Road via the St. Mary Entrance if they do not possess a vehicle reservation for Going-to-the-Sun Road (West). All visitors will be able to drive Going-to-the-Sun Road without a timed entry vehicle reservation going west from St. Mary.
Good reminder! That is mentioned in the video, but it’s a good thing to remember!
I disagree with the comment nobody cares. Those of us who visit our National Parks find this informative.
Thank you! Happy to share! ❤
We plan on going to Glacier next summer . We will be staying at the RV park just outside the park and riding our E-Bikes into the park . Will we need a reservations to enter the park this way ? We already have our America the Beautiful senior pass . Where can we safely park our E-bikes while we take the Red Bus tour ? Hope you can answer these 2 questions . Thanks
You do not need reservations if you plan on entering in by bike or walking. I do recommend you take the shuttle though if you plan on enjoying Going-to-the-Sun in July or August--just to be safe from traffic!

Why can’t u go into the Grand Canyon?
You can! Just most people don’t!
Do you suggest going solo or with friends
@@juanguzman1563 either or! The Grand Canyon is great for solo travelers!
Hi Alex, thanks for all the great tips. What would you suggest for a Boat Tour in Waterton, while seeing the Prince of Wales Hotel?
That’s so funny! You’re the second person to ask me that within a day. Definitely do it! Are you planning on staying at the Prince of Wales?
@@AlexontheMap we will not stay at Prince Wales, just a boat tour. We will be based in Babb so we can access all the East side areas. We watched your Two Medicine and Many Glacier videos and are excited to explore the East side!
Hi Alex, thanks for great info. Considering a boat tour while visiting Waterton next summer. Prince of Wales hotel. Any recommendations?
It’s such a great thing to do! I’d definitely make reservations beforehand if you can since there might not be a lot of space for walk-up passengers.
Great video! How is glacier right now at the end of October? I am coming through and plan on doing some hiking.
Cold! There might be a little snow up there and Going-to-the-Sun Road is closing this week. But no crowds!
@@AlexontheMap Amazing, Thank you!
Were you there in ‘22 or ‘23 (I’d have to check my notes) when a bison killed another bison on the dirt road up to Slough Creek campground about 100yds from the road? Grizzlies and wolves for a week. Imo, Lamar Valley is worth being the only destination in Yellowstone. With binos, spotting scope, a folding chair, camping gear for Pebble Creek campground (providing easy access to the Valley)…guaranteed to have a good time. From the mt goat cliffs near the NE entrance through the valley to Tower-Roosevelt for bison and black bears and everywhere in between. Good advice to sit and wait! I always encourage visitors to ask camp hosts, store cashiers, rangers and other visitors about location of carcasses and wolf pack rendezvous sites. Also, a decent chance of beavers (likely) and badgers (with effort and luck). We’ve only ever done Spring and Summer. Agree with you about Fall. That’s our next trip. I hear Winter is good too but we have to get hyped enough to get through all the mountain passes between coastal PNW and Lamar. Thanks for posting videos and helping people get the most out of visits to national parks etc.
@@stevecooper3510 Absolutely! And have an amazing time this winter! 🎉
I've been to Zion in the spring and late fall several times, and have always avoided it in the summer for the reasons you mentioned. Problem is that if you want to hike the Narrows, too early in the spring is not ideal because water levels are usually too high, and late fall is not ideal either unless if you wear appropriate gear because the water can get cold. My favorite time is May but crowds can start getting bad at that time.
October is my favorite for sure, but May is also a great time! Right before the crowds come in, which is perfect.
My girlfriend went up in the beginning of December and it was like a ghost town. The sights were beautiful with the snow on yhe ground but it wasnt too cold. There were a few shops thay were just straight up closed for the season, but it was awesome to feel like we had the little town all to ourselves
I feel like as a photographer winter is awesome. It can be so beautiful! 😍
From my understanding, the type of bear matters too. From what I've heard about different types of bears, I would definitely take an up close encounter with a black bear over a moose, but I'm not sure that I'd choose a grizzly over a moose. Obviously the best choice for any wildlife is that you each keep a respectful distance from each other though!
@@harmonicaveronica yes! That can definitely be a factor. Black bears can be aggressive too-especially if they have cubs. All of these tips apply for both!
We visited Glacier a few weeks ago and planned on hiking the Highline trail at Logan Pass. We did the right thing by going there early in the morning, but it was really foggy at the time with no views so we decided to come back later when the skies cleared up. We came back around noon, but at that time the parking was full. We had to circle around the parking lot for about 30 minutes until we finally snagged an open spot, and there were plenty of other vehicles dong the same thing. People will literally fight over parking spots here.
Thanks for sharing! People always think I’m exaggerating when it comes to Logan but it’s true-it really is a zoo.
Alex. Thanks for sharing. Where can we park at two-medicine ?
There is a parking lot right near Two Medicine Lake and you can also park in the campground, as well.
Awesome!!!!! ❤
Great video thank you, I do have a question are the Red use tours part of the Park shuttle system? if not do they cost how much, and how do you book them? we are planning a trip for the middle of August 2025 thanks Scott
@@scottallenboyd hi there! Glad this was helpful. The red buses are a separate tour company. They stop at a lot of the same places, but you won’t be able to hop on, hop off if you want to hike. You can book them here, but probably not yet for 2025-you’ll have to wait until spring to do that: www.glaciernationalparklodges.com/red-bus-tours/ Cost varies depending on what tour you choose! Hope that helps!
Thanks for all the great tips and info!! Have you ever been in mid-September? Wondering if the Logan Pass parking situation lightens up a bit after Labor Day?
Hi, Kathy! Yes! That's my favorite time to visit, actually! Parking should let up a lot by then!
Returned them under warranty after a walk in the woods - no heavy hiking! - less then 15km on them; lost two of the outer lace-straps. Nice and comfortable yes, but not as durable as my trusty old M90 Army Bata's. Assume a factory defect - ordered a new pair.
Thanks for all the inside info. Also, do you need a reservation for Many Glacier in late September and early October?
No prob! And nope-reservations end for the year September 8th.
Woodlands national park 💀
Hi Alex, really great informative video. I am planning to go to national park on 7th Sept 2024. I was planning to take the free shuttle inside the park. I have the question does fall shuttle service starts at 8 am in the morning? I couldn't find the start timing of the shuttle on the website. So, asking you if you have any idea. Also, will the fall reduced bus service, do you think I can cover Avlanche creek, lake Mcdonald and Logan Pass in a day ? I would really appreciate your advice. I am getting a red bus tour for 21st September. Any recommendation for 1 day if I take red bus instead of relying on free bus shuttle due to reduced shuttle service after Labor Day. Thanks you !
I am actually not sure about what time the shuttle leaves in the morning in the fall. It might be worth it to call the park to ask. Avalanche Lake, Lake McDonald, and Logan Pass are all main stops, so you shouldn’t have a problem seeing them all that day.
Amazing content, just subscribed to your channel ! Thanks for the detailed information, appreciate it ! Heading there in couple of days. Quick question, is it possible to turn back on the trail after a couple of miles ? We were considering doing hidden lake overlook point and a few miles on highline trail (maybe one or two just for the views) from logan pass. We were not sure if it is feasible to do so or whether it would be worth it ?
So glad that the videos have been helpful! And yes--the Highline can be an out-and-back if you want. I often recommend doing exactly as you mentioned to clients to hike about a mile or two miles in and turn back.
Was definitely our favorite hike. Parking lot is tiny, so go early to get parking. We didn't have reservations so we got there around 5:45am and the lot was half full already. If you're afraid of heights, there's a couple narrow ledges that might be scary for some. But, the views that you get throughout the hike are definitely worth it. Oh yeah, there's tons of bugs as well, so be prepared for that. If you're a casual hiker, just take your time on the ascent and you'll be fine. The steepest portion is the last half mile to get to the glacier, so as long as you pace yourself, it's a relatively comfortable hike. Highly recommended!
I totally agree about getting there early! Makes it so much better!
Don't forget to check trail closures before heading out too! It varies day to day.
@@stevenm6301 Great tips!
You mentioned the spot to refill your water.... Can you actually safely drink the water?
@@michaelwooster8898 yes! All the water in Glacier is treated.
Hey Alex! Love your channel, new subscriber! My husband and I are taking our first trip to Glacier on October 3-6 this year. We’re staying near West Glacier.. will grocery stores and restaurants still be open around this time? Thanks!
@@Alx_mckn hey, there! Nice to meet you! Any restaurants or grocery stores in Whitefish and Columbia Falls will definitely be open. There will be a few near the park open too!
@@AlexontheMap thank you!! 😊
These GTX Salomons did me well. Had 2 pairs which I hiked from the Himalayas to Machu Picchu. The lifespan were about 5 years for both pairs. Where they first showed end of life was where the top of the boot met the footbed.
That's where I have noticed a little bit of wear too. But I'm like you and they're 5 years old and I've taken them on hikes all over the world!
I live in North Carolina and we have fireflies all the time.. you don't have to go to a national park to see this you just have to live outside of the city.. and you should probably lower your sugar and gluten intake it will help your eyes..
😂😂😂
When you say you need a reservation to hike the highline trail, does that only apply to if you are entering the park from the west entrance? I dont know if im misunderstanding the reservation system but i thought if you enter through st mary then no reservation is needed?? Thank you!
That is correct. You only need a reservation if entering from the west side in 2024.
Great video and tips. Thanks for sharing
