The Motorcycle Portraits, Episode 11
In this episode, I finally hit the epic roads of Portugal and Spain. Not that the Pyrenees were not amazing. But thanks to calimoto.com I have been experiencing some absolutely epic rides but the standout road by far on this leg and possibly the whole three-month trip was the GU-194 also known as the Spanish "Great Wall of China" I'm not even sure how I came to it but I did and it was so cool. Not the longest road I've been on but amazing just the same. You can read a bit about it here: www.dangerousroads.org/europe/spain/11517-driving-the-gu-194-road,-the-spanish-%E2%80%98great-wall-of-china%E2%80%99.html#google_vignette
I finally met and photographed Pepo Rosell: xtrpepo?hl=en who makes some ridiculously stunning bikes and I think if I had the money kicking around I would try to get him to build me a bike.
I also very nearly lost my drone on the Portugal/Spanish border at a very cool dam. Luckily I didn't but never really used it again for the trip.

Sure, it looks cool but I found it better to just setup my home screen with the apps I’m most likely to use (Calimoto, Google Maps, I-overlander) vs being forced to look at apps I don’t really use. I should also add that I was not able to sync my bikes settings(RPM,speed, temperature etc) with the DM2 so it seemed like a waste. If I was able to sync then I might have been a bit more inclined to stick with DM2.

As for your specific questions about customs/paperwork. the short answer is no, although when I landed in Ireland they did not know the rules about 90-day stays and exemptions etc. Same issue when I left from Paris to go back to Canada so my advice is that you FULLY know those rules and have a copy of them to show whomever you may need to either arrive without extra fees or leave with your bike. In 88' I took a 32 hour ferry from Newfoundland to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, with the intention to ride across Labrador on my 78' Goldwing. I even picked up a spare gas can in Stephensville, NF. It started out ok, but several miles outside of town it turned into a sand and gravel pit type surface. Not sure how far I got, about 40 miles I guess. There were glacially rounded rocks in the road about the size of hardballs. It worked the forks so much that the fork oil got hot, thin, and acted like it was water. No shock absorption at all. The forks were bottoming out like a hammer, even at 10mph. It was a long way to go yet, just to get to Churchill Falls, so that little voice of reason in the back of my mind said, "What do say about turning around and just enjoy the week, while you wait on the next ferry to take you back?" Sound advice, the Goldwing is too heavy to toss in the back of a truck and haul it back. Now that most of it looks paved, I might try it again.

Hey Steve, that is an amazing story!! and on a Goldwing!! I bet it was crazy to see up close at that time. It's not totally paved just yet so if you wanted some challenge to complete the circle I'd give it a go sooner than later. Thanks for sharing!!

@@TheDavidGoldmanphoto You don't know how right you are about, sooner than later, I'll be 70 y/o this year. LOL The spot I found the most fun was a deep valley with soft sand at the top, going down towards a crooked one lane wooden bridge, and immediately up the other side...not knowing what the surface was going to be like. Actually, that would be twice, because I had to return on that road. Although my objective was not successful, the ride was, because I didn't crash.

I think there were a couple times where you spoke but forgot to drop an unnecessary F bomb into it.

It's possible, I was distracted trying to stay alive. I'm amazed at the comments I'm getting for some swearing. I do give a heads up in the description.

Should have done it a few years ago when there was more than 800Km of gravel, last 250 under heavy construction.

Well to be honest, most of the days were pretty lonely but for whatever reason as I started on the gravel it was kind of busy.
