Old Sarge Pottery & Music
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 24 ส.ค. 2012
Hello everyone and welcome to Old Sarge Pottery and Music (www.youtube.com/@OldSargePottery-Music). I retired from the United States Army in 2008 after serving 25 years. I do not regret one day of my service to this great country that I was born and raised in. I grew up in Ypsilanti Michigan around a lot of cool friends. I must thank Mr. Dorian and Mr. Bates the art teachers at my high school. They both were so cool and very talented. They had so much patience with us. My channel will focus on two subjects, Pottery and Relaxation Music Videos that I make. Various other videos will be posted as well. My short term goal is to post 100 videos and meet the requirements of TH-cam to get monetized. Long term goal is to be Monetized and make some friends along the way.
My musical interest include: Gov't Mule, Derek Trucks, Joe Bonamassa, Pink Floyd, classical piano, violin and a ton of 70's rock bands.

October Kiln Opening, Cone 6 With 5 Minute Hold Pic's at The End.
Hello everyone, welcome to another kiln opening. I threw some more pots for the upcoming Fall Arts Festival in Kingwood. New glazes were used such as Amaco's Mulberry, Fog and Emerald. Some spotting issues with Mulberry but a very nice deep purple color. Starting to use the 1/4 inch tape a lot more with excellent results. It is a challenge down here in a Texas garage to control the drying process of pots. I have started to make Frankenstein pots If a crack appears. I'll just put it with another pot instead of crushing it up for the clay bucket. Again, I would like to thank everyone who has subscribed to my channel. We are over 1,000 subs and growing it only took two years lol.

Hello everyone, welcome to another kiln opening. This is a cone 6 with a 7 minute hold. The pieces came out pretty good. My first time using Stone Denim and River Birch glazes. They both ended up turning out great. I will be using both Buffalo Wallow and Buff clay bodies. They both have their benifits. It can be hard sometimes to dry pottery correctly in a Texas garage. Anyways thank you for wa...

Hello everyone, welcome to another kiln opening. This one is kind of spotty to say the least. I just didn't feel comfortable with the pots, the glaze and the process. Having said that there were some decent pots that came out but there were a few misshaps as well. Mary had some nice pieces. I really like the taller things that she is making now. The decision to switch to a white clay body reall...

Hello everyone, welcome to another kiln opening. Could it be time to change clay bodies? I am currently using Buffalo Wallow. I do like the finished clay body color but not the ability to fire with longer hold times. I only do a five minute hold on cone six. I get a lot of splits and irregular glaze interactions. I want to find a good clay body that can do cone 6 with a twenty minute hold. If a...

Hello everyone, welcome to another kiln opening. I'm still trying out new glazes from Mayco. This time around Ivy, Copper Jade, Capri Blue, Jade and Tuxedo were used for the first time. What I learned from these glazes is that Ivy is a runner, looks great and only needs three coats maybe even two. Copper Jade has a smooth copperish green tint. It did not seem to be a runner. Capri Blue is a ver...

Hello everyone, welcome to another kiln opening. I made a mistake at the begining of the video. There is a photo that has nothing to do with what i'm talking about but only last a few seconds. Having said that this was a great kiln opening for me. I'm trying new glazes and getting out of the rut of making the same pots over and over. Mayco glazes are working great for what i'm trying to accompl...

Hello everyone, so the wheel head on my Skutt has been stuck for a good bit. I finally got off my 4th point of contact and fixed it lol. Anyways, it was fairly easy to complete. The hardest part was putting the wheel on the table. I can't wait to start making some larger bowls and platters now that the shaft extension has arrived. มุมมอง 742ปีที่แล้ว
Hello everyone, welcome to another kiln opening. I'm starting to use more Mayco glazes because they yield great results and are cheaper in price. There is some trial and error of course but that is to be expected. Muddy Waters and Himalayan Salt were new for this kiln opening. Himalayan Salt produced a pinkish overtone on a cream colored background. I will use it for the bottom part of the cups...

Hello everyone, just trying to get one in before the 4th and I was able to do it. I got a sample of Nimbus and tried it out on a plate. The color came out great so I bought some other MAYCO glazes for this kiln opening. I noticed the price difference between MAYCO and AMACO. The Ceramics store that I go to has most MAYCO glazes between $10 - $13 a pint. AMACO was $16 up past $20 for a pint with...

Which clay are you using? I love the rich brown? Love your combos.
Thank you, I use Buffalo Wallow 90 percent of the time. The other 10 percent is Buff, a much stiffer clay body.
great kiln the bowl save was great love your tape resist vase and Mary garden art also the kevlar gloves nerer unstood why so many potter wear the big heavy gloves
Thank you so much. I wear white gloves because they are neutral in color. The ones I buy just happen to be thick.
I'm glad you found my channel and thank you for the sub it means a lot.
Hi, just found your site! I have to say i love your pieces and your glaze combos. I ESPECIALLY LOVE the idea of the bowl that had the "S" crack which you turned into an awesome bowl with the addition of the upsidedown bowl underneath! that was GENIUS! Just subscribed....good job on all your pieces. your friend in NJ, Marie
Awesome job! Great colors and designs. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much.
i love the tree design you made, very smart to use tape!
Thank you.
1st 😊
Right on Dale. Let me know which one is your favorite.
Beautiful pieces ! What clay body do,you use ?
Thank you. I use Buffalo Wallow.
Love your pieces! Question on the vase with magma on the bottom and Norse blue, blue rutile, and blue midnight on top. Are the combination of blues a runner and the magma acted as a barrier to slow the movement? Thanks!
Thank you. Yes, that is exactly what I set out to do with that combination. I also like to use Temoku, Oatmeal, Amber Quartz and Winter Wood for the bottom as well.
First time watching ! Love the vase, absolutely lovely, I need to try the taping technique. Great kiln opening!
Thank you and welcome to the channel.
Nice pieces, my favorite was the vase with flowers using tape resist. How do you paint your signature on the bottoms and what clear glaze over that? Thanks for sharing!-Liana
Thank you. I had a stamp made for the bottom of my pots. The website is www.4clays.com. The clear that I use is Amaco HF-9 zinc-free.
@@OldSargePottery-Music thank you for the information
Congratulations on your milestone! I knew it's been possible for your channel to grow!
Thanks man
Thanks for sharing. As always looking forward to seeing your videos and work. This goes for the both of you.
Thank you so much.
Thank you!
are you using a chamois cloth there at the end?
Yes, it does make a smooth rim.
very informative video - - and great tunes as well. Tnx for posting.
Thank you.
a prehistoric anteater with dark legs and tail, facing right
Wow! Didn't see that one coming. Great imagination.
One possible reason for split rims, I noice your bases are reasonably thick and your rims are somewhat thinner, so when you turn the bases the pressure you are putting on the rims is promoting the split which doesn’t reveal itself until the glaze firing. Nice pieces and love the combinations
Thanks for the advice.
I luv your freaky dudes! dolls? salt n peppers?? beetelguese esc!
Thank you!
Beautiful work! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Beautiful, beautiful 🎉
Thank you so much!
Is Ivy a Mayco glaze?
It sure is, and it's a runner, so keep that in mind.
Oatmeal over iron luster is my go to when I'm just trying to finish glazing. It never fails me❤love the seaweed over amber quartz. Beautiful
I agree with you, thanks for watching and commenting.
Good morning Sarge. I didn't know Ancient copper was food safe!
Good morning to you as well. Yes it sure is and one of the first things that I checked before using. Here is what is written about the glaze: Description. Inspired by classic tomato red reduction glazes, Ancient Copper is an iridescent, iron red glaze that breaks dark brown over texture and pools dark yellow green, giving it a weathered appearance. Lead Free - Food Safe. Thanks for watching my videos.
Very beautiful pots. The contrast in the aesthetics of the work both of you do is remarkable.
Thank you, we both appreciate your remarks.
hey Sgt, where did you get you stamp? I have one, but it does not show as well as your’s does. beautiful pieces!
Hello and thank you. The website for the stamp is www.4clay.com
@@OldSargePottery-Music Thank you
Palladium can only be used on one side of the clay only. if you glazed the under side of your wax ring, that might have caused the bubbling.
Thanks for the advice. I only put the palladium on the top side. I did put a different glaze on the bottom.
try the palladium again maybe on a tile... glaze one side only.... but to proof, you could glaze HALF of the reverse side of the tile. @@OldSargePottery-Music
@@momadhis thank you for the advice. I have used palladium in the past it has always bubbled up. I just end up firing it twice.
Read the bottle instructions and you'll see there is advise not to glaze both sides.@@OldSargePottery-Music
Beautiful accident ginger jar. Like the colors
Thank you
I really like the tall blue and white pot with textured surface.
Thank you
Great work. I think your pot with the “seaweed accident” should be relabeled “Seaweed Incident”. So colorful! Also love the Texas Plate.
Hey there, Mary, thank you. I probably said accident 50 times in the video, lol. The seaweed incident is much better. My favorite of yours is the Jailbird and Mushroom, done on dark clay.
I absolutely love the Seaweed splattered vase. Absolutely fantastic 👏👏👏
@@Nushqa thank you
Really nice kiln load sarge !!
Well thank you very much.
Nice job both you and Mary. I have a couple of questions for you. Did you ever post any videos on application for the colors and the same with the glazing? Next question temperature of the kiln? Final question is how long does the kiln run for? Great job. Thanks for posting.
Hello, thanks for the questions. I do have a coupe of videos of me glazing and putting designs onto pots. My kiln fires cone 6 to 2232 degrees farenheight. I fired this kiln load on medium speed and it took about 7 and 1/2 hours.
Thanks, that helps me understand your comments ad you pulled your nice looking work out of the kiln. Have a nice day!
Thank you
Hi , new to your channel . What was the cone of your firing, and what speed? Thank you:)
Welcome to my channel. I fired at cone 6 with a 5 minute hold on medium speed.
A very honest down to earth kiln opening refreshing to see. Some jems in there, I always find my ref fires come out better. Great video
Hey, thanks so much.
Absolutely love the rustic charm of your pottery. 😍 Also, it's nice that you focus entirely on showing the pots in your videos. One can get a proper eyeful of how they look. My favourite are the pitcher with the lid that looks almost like a small cup, and the bowls with lids. Very beautiful shapes and colours.
Your very insightful with your comments. The lid is a small cup. I didn’t think anyone would catch it. Your comments have just made my day a better one.👍
I just added ivy to my glaze stock. I haven't tried it yet but it's so beautiful. Did you do any test tiles first or did you just go for it? I ask because I really need to start doing test tiles 😂
I can’t bring myself to make test tiles lol. I did have a few pots stick but adjusted because it is a runner. It’s one of my favorite glazes now.
@OldSargePottery-Music neither can I! Maybe I'm just lazy lol love your video!
I like your work.
That’s very kind of you to say, thank you.
Love every single piece!! The old world pitchers and vases are amazing!!
Thank you so much.
My favorite is the lidded vase with copper jade, tigers eye, shino, and amber quartz glazes. Also love the Old World pitcher. Looking forward to seeing more oyster plates. Tnx.
Very creative with both of your work. Looking forward to seeing more.
Nice kiln opening. Love the Ivy. Thanks for the share!
The Ivy glaze is beautiful, how do you know what glazes run and don’t run?
I had a few pots stick when I first used this glaze. You really don’t know how much a glaze will run until you use it. I adjusted how low I painted in the pot and didn’t go so heavy with it. It is one of my favorite glazes now.
The brown glazes on the vase compliments the shape of it, very nice
The Green old world pitcher and the red plate are beautiful.
I really like the jade and ivy mugs
Thank you, they came out really nice. I’m digging that Ivy glaze.
Absolutely AMAZING pots!! Love the glaze combos!! LOVE the ivy. I’m going to have to try that one. Really cool sculptures your friend made too. I absolutely love the pitcher it’s so amazing!!
Michele, thanks so much. I’m glad you like the pitcher. I didn’t know how that one would be received.
Hey thanks, maybe if I keep messing around with the process it will work out. I’m going to video two more. We’ll see if they get better.
Thank you for sharing your process on that bowl! Your initial glaze trailing was so intricate! Too bad you had to cover it with the top coat! It's a beautiful bowl!
Nice kiln opening, Old Sarge! LOVE the green peacockish bowls and that IVY is looking great layered. I haven't tried it layered yet! Did you say what clay that is that you are using? I may have missed it. Also, really loving the Ancient Jasper & Oatmeal combo. Such drama! Nice to have a helpful Daughter. Merry Christmas to you both!
Thank you, Ivy is such a nice color. At the very beginning of the video I put some text info on the clay and firing temp. The clay is Buffalo Wallow. Ancient Jasper and Oatmeal has become a favorite of mine. Merry Christmas to you as well.
@@OldSargePottery-Music Sorry I missed the text regarding the clay body. Cheers!
Beautiful old world pitcher. Colors came out looking great.
