Whether it’s Sleep Walk or Sleepwalk, this is a great starting lap steel tune. We’ll go through every part of this short song and make it clear. Dad’s back. Plenty more demos to come.

มุมมอง 62K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Behind bar bends, harmonics, chords: A short introduction to lap steel in open E. This video is centered around ideas for playing over Elton John’s “Country Comfort”. Signal chain: 1940s Valcor Supro lap steel - Arc Effects Klone - Goodrich Low Profile passive volume pedal - Boss Waza DM2 analog delay - Fender Princeton Reverb Reissue.
Do you have links to videos of your band playing this? It'd be great to hear it in practice.
Please do more of these I’m incredibly new to lapsteel and I like your tutorials 😭
To hard to learn 😩
Wish I knew what he was talking about. I know very little about music. I have a lap steel guitar, I know how to tune it and that's about all. This lesson if much too advanced for me.
@@iamrocketray rewatch as many times as you like - that’s the beauty of it
@@ryanradcliffguitar Thank You !
dont have one yet, but imma build one out of an old tailgate from my friends chev. its cheaper than buying one and hopefully it'll sound unique
I’m trying to find a good budget or used lap steel right now !! I’m 66 and started playing rythym guitar at 12 years old with my uncle’s Cajun band. I gave up playing guitar because of fingering hand surgery for 20 years and about a year ago I saw a squire telecaster at pawnshop and asked him to see it ? Don’t know why but I could catch a couple more chords on it better than my 1979 peavy T 60 ?? Having it since brand new !! I got a slide and started using it on the Tele. Then ran across the bar you use with a steel for your chords. I’m a TRUE CAJUN and have been laughed at because of my equipment !! I put the Tele on my mom’s ironing board with a short neck wedge to raise the front and the new chrome bar and making music with this setup ??? Lmao!! I know about which frets I’m supposed to be using but can’t tell anyone what chord I’m using ?? I’m tuned 440 and used to use a F chord and do G C D chords and slide them with my fingers and that’s kinda what I been doing on my ironing board steel guitar 🎸 ?? Lol I will be needing a book on getting started when I find something I like and can afford !! How are those low budget Asian steels ?? $ 300 bucks ?? If I can’t pull it off then I won’t be out of a bunch of cash !! I’m having trouble holding the bar in my fingering hand is a problem ?? Maybe I don’t have the right technique or the right kind either ?? Any suggestions for me ?? You can laugh all you want at this CAJUN and his RIG !! I need someone who has experience to help me out because I want to PLAY AGAIN and not look Stupid doing it !! CRAZY CAJUN !!
@@WendellDurio jump to a lap steel if you can - those frets can be real pesky and you’ll want to get on something without frets - the cheap lapsteels are great. It’s all about playing in time and in tune, my man.
For beginners???
Have you ever tried the palm benders on your lap steels?
@@BryanClark-gk6ie not yet - I’d have to get a separate lap steel for that, but I have my eye on doing it to one of those cheaper Gretsch models
This is a great open E video , I'm 70 and won't to play some lap steel songs your Lessons are easy to follow with out all the music Theory .. Thanks
Hi. I am new to lap steel. Do you have a video explaining the muting please?
@@iangoodall7228 I’ll make one
I like the lunchbox title. No picks is interesting also.
Good demo Ryan. Sounds like c6 tuning I guess. What strings are you pinching with your right hand?
Thank you - should be the 5th and 4th strings, and then later I’m doing it to the 4th and 3rd strings
Any chance of making more of these videos?
@@Charliecarswell absolutely! Lots of ideas on the list, just need to set up and record
Hello, I am from Chile. What effects pedal do you recommend for a lapsteel..please.
@@cristobalvicenciobazaes1369 I use a volume pedal and a slapback delay, with reverb coming from my amps. Beyond that, I use boost and overdrive pedals - anything will do.
@@ryanradcliffguitar hello. Thanks my friend.
I saved this video, lost it and just refound it! Great playing!
What a great lesson!
Hi Do you give online lessons ?
Yes! Email me at ryanradcliff@gmail.com
Beato!
Oh my god. I never thought to bend the string before the slide like that. Thats so crazy. Thanks for sharing!
Que efectos de sonido usas aparte del pedal de volumen?
I’m using a Goodrich L-120
Thanks so much I really enjoyed that. PS I finally found someone I get and you only have 2 videos :(!!
Thank you - I will make more!! ❤️❤️ Just living that newborn baby life right now 🤪
Congrats!!!
Thanks so much for the easy camera position, and of course for playing on open E!
Thanks Ry
as a "regular" guitar player, I tend to want to be too busy. This guy has some really cool ideas about HOW TO slow down and sound more like a steel guitar player.
Great info, 👍
Your method of explaining the tune and how you execute is clear and straightforward. Thank you. While I am in open D, I will try to use your pattern. I suppose there is nothing to stop me from tuning up to open E, my string set is rated up to E. I am grateful to you.
Thanks for cool video.. I play on a mid 50’s Rickenbacker 6 string. I also like tuning to E lots of places to slant. I wish I would have kept my old Morley volume pedal I need to get a different one now. What manufacture of volume pedal are you using? Your Supro Sounds really nice
Thank you - that’s a Goodrich passive volume
What string are you raising to get the pedal steel sound affect is it the second and third for the 1st and 2nd string and you are tuned to open tuning E tuning
I’m using my pinky to pull the B string up a step. Tuned to open E.
Please do more lap steel videos. This song isn't my style, but I'm just beginning my lap steel journey and I want all the lap steel lessons I can get! Liked and subscribed!
Thank you! I have more coming soon
Your volume pedal technique is fantastic, too.
Nice video Ryan! Love the harmonic and the pinky-bend behind the bar!! do some more in open E if you would. Long time guitar player but total newbie on lapsteel
Thanks Marc! I’ll be set up for more lessons this summer
This was amazing. Thanks so much.
Ryan, thanks for this video here, 35 years ago i found a 1957 Supro in a pawn shop, for $100, it has that old Horseshoe looking pickup, it looks a lot like yours here, I tune to a C6 , because i was after that Hank Williams Sound, for Country, I hear Mr. Duane Allman here in your playing, Duane is My Hero, Cousin Figel
That is so kind - I love Duane’s playing so much - he’s my hero too!
thank you so much! this is the only open e video i could find that was easy to fallow and learn. this is also my first song im learning on the lap steel. is there a backing track for this to play along with that you recommend?
Thank you! You got this! And I think my take in the same key as the Santo & Johnny original
Great video! Thanks for sharing 👍
Great
Great to have you back! Will be watching for more! Steel players stick together!
Brilliant video Ryan, thank you. I couldn't find the domnant 7th chord. at what point do you talk about it? thanks.
Thanks! It’s 3 frets up on the B and G# strings. That gives you a flat 7th and 5th.
Nice
Great guitar video! Keep up the good work.
Great video, thank you! Do you have any reccommendations for a beginner on what type of Lap guitar you might reccommend? thank you.
Tone matters with lap, and especially the pickup - I believe in these old Supro Valcor models. I bet they float around on Reverb and eBay.
@@ryanradcliffguitar Ryan thanks so much! It looks amazing the sound is incredible, I look forward to learning how to play. Thanks again!!
Is the volume pedal spring loaded?
That’s just a standard Goodrich passive volume pedal.
Mind blown! Thanks for revealing your technique. I learned a ton:) You gave away so much knowledge and unveiled so much of the mystery I feel like I can confidently take another shot at the lap steel. Thanks for the love!
What a pretty little Supro!
Really nice tutorial, thanks!

I'm sure kind Sir; you know that the first original Hawaiian (Steel) Guitar in the 1880's; that used the open Key E*; they had a D note on the 5th string. This gave a 7th chord on every fret. Yes you loose the bottom 5th note. But that 7th is used so much; the Hawaiians (who invented the SG) gave up that B string. Then later they built a 7 stringer. And they got that B back. I kind of think they did this solely for that 7th. Not sure. Later; when they made 8 string SG's; they added the low 3rd note. But the "Western Swing" SG players did this. (HI to LO) E C# B G# E D B E. For this gave them a 13th chord; that fit perfect in their style of playing. Also gives a minor chord (C# minor open strings). For what it's worth. Thanks for your channel. Great. * The 2nd tuning they invented; was A major (HI to LO) E C# A E A E (low Bass). But some did this (HI to LO) E C# A E C# A (Hi Bass). And the 3rd invention was a C# minor tuning. (Hi to Low). E C# G# E B E. Some called it E6. Then over the years; it is said here are more than one hundred tunings; that SG players came up with. WOW! Of course, that spawned "Pedal" Steel Guitars. And the rest is History.
Thanks
hi Ryan , What gauge strings are you using and are they round ,semi flat ,or flat wound,oh and do you use a wound G string?I just got a 51 Supro and am a Guitar player for years.Thank you so much.Great playing
Hey Donnie - I think this is a set of 12s or 13s, wound G for sure. Normal round wound.
12s is right
